Hi All,
Im looking at buying a wh statesman 5.7 V8
It has only done 42 000Kms ( very low ) And I know they guy who owned it was an Old man who has since passed away . He didnt drive the car that much.
It was serviced by the book and I mean by the book, but he has been dead for 2 years and it hasnt been serviced since he passed .
Q's
What would it be worth ? they son just wants to get rid of it and is thinking 7-8K ( i think thats good )
Fuel economy , what are the rough figures to expect for city driving and country cruising .
Someone mentioned that these motors suffered from piston slap ? how can I check
Thanks
Matt

WH - that's about the VT-VX era isn't it? For those K's at that price, it would be a steal.

The average price for WH series 1 V8's seems to be about $8k-$14k, depending on leather, sunroof, K's, etc. Given the k's on that example, it sounds like good value. WH series 1's go side-by-side with the VT series, so yes they are more prone to piston slap than the other models. This can be checked by idling the car from cold to warm and having a listen. It isn't the end of the world if they slap a bit, so I wouldn't be deterred if there was some slapping noise.
Fuel economy is about the same as any 4-speed auto LS1 vehicle. Expect around 15-16l/km around town, and down to 8-9l/km on the highway (all depending on average speed of course).

Thanks for the info.
Im lucky enough to have it for the weekend and drove it to work today.
Not knowing much about the V8's I have a VZ s Ute and comming from that and a 1.8 corolla , I can say it has a bag load of power . I knoticed the motor misses a tiny bit at the lights every now and then but the power is smooth as silk .
It also has a little squeek in the brakes and first press on the brake pedal feels a bit spongy compared to the second.
I can put this down to not having a service for almost 2 years and not been driven for about the same period . all other services have been right on the book .
Im going to check it out properly over the weekend , anything else to look out for
Thanks

I bought LS1 Statesman last Dec, $9800, and was a good deal then, done 100km full service history.
Gas economy is good, on a trip i get better than 600km out of 60 liters and about 450-500km round town.

Generally the old WH Stateys are a good reliable bus. Any problems would more than likely have been sorted out in warranty, to leave just smooth motoring :)

Matt,
I have that model and it had 120,000 km on it when I got it 20 months ago!
It now has 192,000 so I do a lot of Ks per week! I put it on injected gas at 125000! It has not missed a beat since and I just use normal commodore plugs! It used to cost me $150 - $200 per week in petrol, now its just $60 and I do 900ks per week with about half country driving. Its worth looking at injected gas as it doesnt have a noticable drop in HP. It payed for itself in no time!
Moz!!:)

I'm about 99% sure that Series1 didn't, but Series2 did.
