My mate just recently bought one, the only issue he has had has been the clutch but im sure that is just general wear and tear, from what i have seen of it they area pretty reliable car just be sure to check that the brake rotors are not lipped or warpped aint cheap to replace, and that there is no unusual noises of course

aint no bad points about a VZ CLUBSPORT.
the ONE of many good points is it looks heaps better than a VE.
BUY ONE.

I reckon the HSV VZ range is pretty solid...not many generic faults, that I'm aware of anyway.
Same as any car, as others have said, look for signs of abuse, check out the interior for wear, & make sure you know the service history of the car.
Cheers, Pickles.

Great car, the LS2 is a great motor, lots of torque where it matters. Id say go for it.

GO FOR IT , imo the Z series is the best of the hsv line up..

Looks are subjective, I spose the real downside over VE is the V platform on which the VZ is based, spans back to the 1960's (although many times revised)

Z series is a great range, I have a Maloo series 2 and I cant fault it at all, well except for the fact it wants to get driven all the time haha......

Just remember when looking for a Clubby make sure the interior is in good nick, its easy to throw a lick of paint here or there but interior parts start to cost a lot of money if they need replacing, that and the discs if it has the AP Racing package like mine does.......

Good luck

I have been looking at a couple of vz clubsports recently and one i checked out was one owner 45k on the clock. One of the better looking clubsports imo but what did supprise me was the amount of interior wear for klms travelled. The driver side bolster was heavily worn and there was noticable wear on the buttons/indicator storks. I suppose the fact the bolster comes to a point that it will wear on that area, nothing major.

The front bolsters wear very easily, especially when you consider how many times you drag yourself across them getting in and out of the car!

diffs get common clunk/binding noise that an additive from hsv usually fixes.
check brakes are a must as you dont want have to replace them straight away, disc are common for warping.

I've sold mine a while ago and it was one of the best cars I had, it was a Z R8, One thing to look out for is the two differnet brake setups i the models, the 2004- early 2005 models have the Harrop brakes, which sqeaul like a motherF**ker, while the later models have the AP racing brakes which are slotted and not drilled and perform alot better.

Great Choice!

I have had a VZ maloo for about 3 years now and I still love it, for me there hasnt been any major probs, the few things that I have had to deal with are:

- Power steering pump out of allignment causing belt squeel
- Small oil leak from power steering pump hose connection
- Right rear shockie coming loose
- stainless steal insert on the gear knob coming off

The only downside that bugged me a little was the factory stereo head unit, for amp connection ther is no pre-amp outs, and for connecting an ipod there was no Aux in. However for around $300ish there are forum gurus that where able to mod the head unit for me so I now have both, There are even more types of stereo mods available since I did mine if you want to keep the factory look.

Great choice dude!

You can't get an off the shelf cat back exhaust for them without modifying it. HSV decided to make the exhaust unique to this model.

VZs had problems with the BCM clagging out causing the indicators to stay on when locking/unlocking the car.

Check it doesn't have piston slap. Just because it's an LS2, doesn't mean it can't have it.

I personally don't think the leather in my R8 is as good quality as the leather that was on my Coulsons in my VT R8. I don't really make the effort to use conditioners and all that stuff so maybe the VZ seats require some extra love but they look worse at 70,000kms than the coulsons did at 110,000kms

I have had my VZ Clubbie since new in 05 and the only prob I had was a waterpump that let go at about 40,000kms. Easy fix.

The work I've had done by Powertorque has been lasted the distance when I had;

* Full 2.5" DiFillipo system, ceramic coated headers.
* Crower Cam 226/232,114 LSA with Mafless tune.
* Powertorque OTRCAI
* Heads ported & polished
* 3.9 Diff gears.

This all got done at about 5,000kms. I now have 105,000kms and not a hint of a problem. Still on the the factory clutch as it's done mainly highway km's and I don't punish my car at all....even though the temptation is there with 308rwkw!

Having said that though I am wanting to sell her as I need to respect the needs of my neighbours (too loud at 4am)...the joys of shift work! Look for my ad soon in the classifieds! :eyes:

I love the look of the VZ series and can highy recommend them!

Do the VZ's crack at the firewalls due to stiff suspension etc like the earlier ones. The VZ should have a sway bar installed but check that too.

Been the best car I have had :goodjob:

As others have said the VZ Clubby is a pretty good car - both in terms of performance and reliability. By the time the VZ came round Holden (finally) fixed nearly all of the niggling problems i had with my VT and VX cars.

LS2 motor is great and after 80,000 hard km's i can say the only things that have failed are the clutch (due to hard driving and power increases from modifications) and suspension bushes were always being replaced (again due to hard driving on track days etc).

no they dont hence the strut brace also :)

i love my VZ to death, i think it was one of the golden models with good looks, a good engine with torque in every corner of the rev range and without the weight penalties of the move to VE bodies...

That said i looked at quite a few VZ clubsports and you have to watch them, check for rear main leaks and also stand on the brakes and check for squeling.

I ended up going for the twin piston brakes as they are immaculate on this one and every other one i looked at with the AP brake option had lipped rotors etc... The pads just seem too heavy with those calipers.

Oh and get a manual if you can find one :smilesandbanana:

Only issue ive had with mine is fukers stealing the badges and the clutch is having some issues with progression atm, hopefully the bleed fixes it though :)

I've had mine for almost 2 years, the only real problem I've had with mine was the BCM stuffing up, as mentioned indicators staying on, but also windows randomly not going up or down, immobilizer malfunctioning (couldn't start the car at times). Got that replaced and no problems with it since. The only other thing is the general Holden/HSV diff wear.

Aside from that, masses of toruqe all over the place for effortless daily driving.

I'd be looking at paying around $29k for a Clubby and $33 for an R8. It's a buyers market so don't be afraid to push these sellers.

it depends on the whats available, VZ clubsports running dry on carsales in VIC at the moment, manuals tend to have a premium on their heads i had to pay more just to score a manual :)
