difference between VZ and VE engine ?

hi,

i have been told that you can not use parts of a VE series on an engine for a VZ.
what is the difference and how do i find out which engine i have got ?

i bought it as a L76 6.0L create.

some of the last VZ utes had the L98 fitted
L76 has the DOD lifters fitter for AFM
L98 has a bigger sump and no DOD gear
the new VE's with AFM use the L76

Correct
AFM is only on the Autos in the Ve range

From memeory without checking bothe the L76 and L98 have the same reluctor wheels/ might be wrong , the ls1 has a different reluctor wheel 48tooth for L76and L98 and 24tooth Ls1/Ls2 somthing along those lines

No that is only different between vz and ve ls2's. Not l76/l98

There is another good thread on here that has pics of how to identify the L76. Basically it comes down to the DOD/AFM socket at the rear of the intake on the valley cover, slightly different PCV connections.

If its a VZ L76 it will have a front sump oil pan. VE's have a large rear sump pan. VZ L98's also had the front sump pan.

Also the VE engines have the shallow lower profile front accessory drive system a-la Corvette.

Martin , A mate also picked up a create L76 ( VZ front sump version )and it has been stripped to check a few things and we noticed that its missing all of the DOD hardware and the valley plate isnt the DOD version more like the L98 one ?.

Not sure if the create engines are different again to what ended up inthe VZ cars. But im sure someone else on here knows .

Front sump L98's were used on late VZ once the VE was released. Ute's and possibly also wagons.

(in this case there is a couple different ducks that dont quite quack the same :) )

You should come and have a look through EPC4 one day. The amount of parts that can change through an identical looking model range can be a big shock to the uninitiated...

i could not find the other thread, but my sump (boulge) is at the front of the engine, so it must be a VZ.

i have a kit car, which used to have an old 350 cast block and i need more power and less weight. with the cast iron block it weight just under 1T.

Yeah the L76 & L98, plus LS3, LS7, and VE LS2's have the same 58X reluctor wheel. The 58X came in from model year 06 when tighter Euro III or (similar in US) emissions standards for cars came in, Jan 1 06 in Oz.

24X is all LS1 and VZ LS2's (rumoured to be some VZ 58X LS2's but never seen any in the flesh, and GM's parts system does not show them up either).

The 24X is actually two 24X wheels welded together and one tooth out of phase, so maybe this is where the 48X idea comes from. :)
