Last Sunday my husband and eldest son, the two Joe's, went fishing off shore from here, Geraldton
and as they had lines in these beauties came up to say hello and flip them off and have a look
Joe, my huby, said he has never seen them that close , at one stage he could have touched one''s tail it was so close , the sounder was going ballistic !!!!
Here is the link to 3 short vids YouTube - Whales off West Aus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9ZU7fqWC4g)

Yeah they can sure scare the bejesus out of you when they sneak up and say hello!
I had a pair come over to me for a look while I was fishing off tweed heads....I was less than 2 mile from shore and they had passed inside of me by a fair way, then they decided to pop over for a looksee at me. They went right under the boat...and its not a very big boat....I was shittin' bricks. Something freaky about a beast with an eyeball bigger than a cricketball just lookin' straight at ya'. they'd have been twice the size of my boat.

Same thing happened to me and a couple of relatives at Pt Victoria only a few months ago. Took us completely by surprise, a little bit hairy up that close.
Lucky we saw whales because we caught SFA in the 6 hrs we were out there.
Truly awesome creatures.

Thanks HC,:) he is doing well, 15 months since Dx's now and another clear PET SCAN 7.8.09 but his onco has said he/we need to be more vigilant now till he makes the 2 year mark , when the chance of it going bad drops dramatically so we hope for a good outcome but it is a long way off yet , in the meantime he is living life as you can see:)
Hope all is well with you and yours.
Cheers for the comments guys !!!!

These were approx 17 nm off the coast , they swam under the boat etc but were very gentle Joe said
That's so cool! We went to Byron Bay once and just so happened that there were some whales going past at the time we were there.. so rare that even the lady in the gift shop at the lighthouse had to come out to see..

I had a similar situatition when i was surf life saving at Mooloolaba, whales in close and every man with a boat was getting too close.
Now i skydive fairly regularly around Jervis Bay on the NSW south coast, and you can see them regularly whilst standing in the door spotting.

That is AWESOME. What an experience. I would have loved to have experienced that and I would have gotten 1000+ shots out of the camera in the process. Wonderful.

I have good friends that run a 60 ft cat from Sydney Harbour for Corporate Cruizes etc and last year they were coming back from Cairns and I cant remember exactly, but were anchored up and could actually hear the whales singing all night for 5 days. Each day they would wake up, take their kids in the water and swim within meters of these things...
They were swimming with the mum's and babies (still a few tonnes) and the babies were really curious. When he told me the story at a BBQ he actually got teary telling me about it. This guy who isnt exactly a sensitive type said it was the single most amazing experience of his life. The males werent around and the closest he got was about 10ft at one stage.
The first thing he said was they have so much size and power but they are truely the most peaceful creature, and he couldnt understand how anyone would hurt them.
They have some pretty amazing photos.

Hey, someone's having you on. BB is one of the best spots on the coast (being the most easterly), for land-based whale watching.
Still great to look at 'though!!
