I assume you can use normal radial front tyres with these?
also do they need to be heated up for grip?
what rim width would be needed for the 245/50/16, I assume 8"

They are gonna be tested at the strip in an LS1 soon apparently.

the ls1 guys in the states have been using them for awhile so I dont doubt that they will work well with an ls1

some one get a free b for testing ?

I got no doubts about them but would be nice to see comparison to slicks with our cars :)

um you cant drive slicks on the road

sort of an apples and oranges kind of test really

or do you just mean only really comparision times on the quarter

:werd:

hopefully if thats what you are looking for someone will test it properly and compare

standard tyres
v drag radials
v drag slicks

same rim would help has well in relation to weight etc

That would B me strife! I like ya style BTW...

Kris has sent some up here. (Nice guy)

We are going to try these with my car at the next meet, SC asked me so because they'd like to report on these things.

Also we will be putting them on another 346 NA 400+ rwhp Clubby with big back brakes, back to back after 19" tyres and a heavy car.

cat12z has also stepped up to the plate, so we can all see the benefits over street tyres. Some serious peddlers here.....

The yanks run 8's on these things and frankly I'm so glad that someone has actually bought them into the country, cause as you know, we've been waiting for the day. I reckon they are going to be the grouse.

Should be fun.

makes sense, like I said they dont need much testing with an LS1 the US guys have had good results

weird we havent seen much mention of these on the forum

Ye the skylines and shit have had more to do with it all than us in AUS.

I wanna see how they go on the strip.

On the street would be ideal but sizes might be an issue.

No one has had them with our cars, I guess.

Interestingly though, I drive my car every day and after 50,000k's I still use the same tyres that it came with. I have used them down the 1/4 mile many times and even with the extra power they will grip once your in third gear, always…. So these NT555R 245/45/17 should go very well.

My car is stock in the suspension department, so are the others. It should be a good comparison.

Some reasonable POWER too! ;)

not sure the last time your street tyres saw the track and Im sure you will agree a back to back testing methodology would be the proper way to test these things

Back to Back..... Absolutely.... Slip and slide will give me more MPH.

Do they have any smaller in 18in to suit hsv rims size?

When they say DOT approved they are reffering to the US Law, but if my rough math is correct 6/32nds of an inch, that would be about 48mm of tread. So good to use on Aussie roads legally?

I assume though that these are only a drive to the track option not something you use on your car on a regular basis? This is what I understood from a thread on another forum. Still the ability to keep the big brakes on your car and just have these on another set of rims is a huge bonus!

dont believe so in the Nittos I believe the 18" config was developed for either the mustang or the lightning

BFG also make some drag radials they have two styles and a bigger range of sizes. But dont know if they are as good or better than nittos, but Id definately like to try some of either brand.

6/32" will pass but these things are sticky and will get down to the threshold very quickly. Not really a good street compound ;)
As with comp tyres, make sure your insurance company is cool with you using these on the street first though.

Nitto also warn that you will have to be careful with these in the wet ...but sensible people will realise that in any case. Better to buy a separate set of rims to bung these on ...just use these to get to the strip - race - go home.

Nitto are considered the budget tyre of choice for drag and road racing in the U.S. at the moment and to their credit they tend to hang ay the tracks and talk the 'joe sixpack' racer to get impressions and feedback - so thats a good thing.

Peter .....interested to know how these stack against the BF Goodrich Drag Radial. Any chance they may throw a set at you for the comparison? Maybe a chat to Michelin might get you a set to try ?

It's good to see some alternatives showing up for the drag blokes. never been too many alternatives to 'Sticky Mickeys'...now we they have two.

Nitto have a circuit (road race) derivative of the 555R available (555R II) . Now I've only seen these compared to Kuhmo comp tyres (In GMHTP) and Nitto seemed to win out with a clear margin to Kuhmo in this budget tyre shootout. Unfortunately Nitto may have trouble competing this segment here in Oz as most of the serious comp tyres look to be cheaper ....including the RE540 from Bridgestone. There are bigger volumes of comp tyres sold here and the segment is hotly contested between Dunlop, Bridgestone, Yokohama and Falken.

I'm interested in his feed back, I thought his 345rwkw Soarer did a 13.1 on those nittos, don't know the mph but still seems pretty crap considering the power

You can try my simmons. 285 x 18. I had to pump the guards for them not to rub. Still have prob an inch on the inside spare but I would suggest you will need mini tubs which will stuff any rear seat.

I am going to try the Do1 dunlop when i get my eng. They come in an 265 x 18 hopefully I will put on petes when he trys the nittos and see what time diff. From what I can read on the nittos they are basically a semi comp like the Do1.

Justice, If you want to use the Nitto 555R they have a softer side wall for drag racing....the Dunlop DO1 is a stiff wall semi comp and is not really compatable .....doesn't enjoy lower inflation pressures required.

if you want to try a Nitto circuit tyre, you'll could use the 555R II which has stiffer side walls for high lateral loads encountered in circuit racing..The yanks consider these budget tyres which is why they are compared with Kuhmo there. Unfortunately it looks like they are more expensive here than the big 4 semi-com suppliers at this point.

Thanks for that. Size is more my issue than price. 285/295 x18

13.00 @ 120mph, 2.64 60' due to gearbox problem, then blown diff. Cant tell you much more other than the Nittos were a bit narrow at 245/45/17 for that car

Might pay to look at MT drag Radials these days....vastly superior tyre in grip levels imho......and yep :) ..I run both the Nitto and MT........also worthy of note is the MT comes in at 1/2 the price of the Nitto and can be driven in the wet if need be......not a good idea with the Nitto

NT555R 245/45/17 seem to hook up pretty good on my car - clutch suffers now though - too much traction i assume - but then again my numbers dont really do them justice as a testimonial - They are not too bad on the street if inflated to 36 - but bit scary at 18 - much more preferable tyre on car than drag slick and front runner for handling (down the 1/4)
