Here's a crappy pic of my project.
'82 Porsche 928S auto that I picked up about 8 weeks back.
Comes with a 4.7L OHC V8 engine in this model with a torque tube running down to the transaxle with the gearbox and diff mounted together.
Electrics are going to give me some grief but I'll have a crack and see what happens.
The engine is pretty much clagged but that's okay.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/shed4.jpg

I picked this LS1 up out of a VX that tried to turn itself into an Ostrich.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0012.jpg

As soon as I bought the car, i went here http://www.renegadehybrids.com/ and ordered the full kit to convert my 928 to run an LsX.

I sent the computer and wiring harness to Las Vegas for them to cut and shut to suit the Porsche.
I also bought a new set of pulleys as well as an underdrive harmonic balancer and belts. i thought I may as well change all this crap now rather than wrestle with it when its in the car later.

Then nothing much happened as I was drawn away by other two wheeled projects for a while. while I waited for my bits to be made and shipped.

Well, after 7 weeks or so, the gear arrived and I collected it last weekend!
Including this radiator which looks lovely !

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/rad.jpg

So, currently, I need to get the engine ready to fit.
Which means I need to give it a clean and a dulux overhaul and fit the new pulleys and what not.
Now I need to find out the torque settings for all the pulleys so if you know them, help me out !

Will post more pics as things trundle along.

It's a streeter all the way.
I doubt I will bother getting it passed by the pits though unless I have to. But i don't think it would be an issue, the LS1 is bound to be cleaner than the 82 model engine.

So things are moving along slowly. Got the headers ceramic coated and some new leads as well as a good clean up and some new paint.
Fitted an underdrive pulley to it today as well as some other pulleys i thought I'd replace while I was at it.

I'd put pics up but it appears now that my post count isnt high enough to post pics.
although I've posted pics at the start of this thread.
Nice work mods.

I'll just go spam some threads and come back then shall I ?

Thanks Spider.
I can now post stuff thanks to XLR8 V8, so i should have some more tomorrow to put up.
As can be seen, the main reservoir for oil is now at the back of the engine instead of the front.

Interestingly, the sump doesn't contain a dipstick hole like on our Aussie Gen3 set up. But there's a welsh plug in the block blanking off a hole that the tin tanks use in some of the US applications.
So that I knocked out and am now cutting and shutting the original dip stick tube to get the right height.
It's a little more involved than just cutting five inches off the end but not too hard.

I had an issue with the stock sump bolts now being too long because of the difference in thickness of material.
I didn't realise this till i'd already put three bond down on some of the joins.
So I've made a temporary fix to hold down the corners where I used the Three Bond.
I'll get some proper sized screws tomorrow and change them out.

Great project :goodjob:

outa interest , what's the weight difference between the engines ?

The LS1 is apparently lighter than the Porsche 3.0 by 56 lbs.

It would be great around the twisties :goodjob:

Edit:disregard that info,this one has a 4.7 V8.

Boganspeed
15-11-2009, 01:59 PM
Porsche donk is 574lbs (according to the internet so it must be right :P)
LS1 is about 460 or 500lbs depending on where you look.

As for colour, luckily the engine bay is not body colour so if I decide to change the colour later on, I won't need to pull the engine, i'll just paint the engine bay black and can worry about it later.
I think it will depend on how the conversion turns out and how I go sorting the other electrical issues the car has as to how long I keep it.
I've always wanted to restore a Porsche 912 (like a really early 911 with a dubby type motor) so we'll see.

SO the engine is pretty much finished with.
Engine covers on, sump done, modified dipstick tube done and fitted, new pulleys, belt, blahdy blah blah.
I have concerns the headers may not fit.
So i may have some freshly ceramic coated headers for sale soon, we'll see what happens as I have the stock manifolds here as well, just in case.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0006.jpg

So I decided it was high time to stop messing around and start dismantling the car.
So today I put it up on jack stands, bonnet off, radiator and heat exchanger out and messed around with a few small things.
The air con heat exchanger has had the pork sword but the rad is an aftermarket ally/plastic job which i may sell on afterwards.
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0004.jpg

Haha I need to raise the car up a few more clicks on the jack stands because I can't fit under the car still.
Much to the guffaw's of my mates ...fkn douche bags :(

A bit of achievement today.
Got in early today before the 40 degree heat arrived and lifted the motor out.
It's a really wide engine compared to the Chev.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0022.jpg

You can see I used rope for the actual lifting and fitted a couple of bike tie downs as safety back ups which thankfully weren't needed.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0024.jpg

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0028.jpg

Here you can see the bell housing and torque shaft that mounts to the flex plate. Don't forget this car runs the transmission down the other end of the car.
The shaft is only about 25mm in diameter but there is also a torque tube which is about five inches in diameter that the shaft runs in.
They share the load from the engine and apparently they can take some real power.
But it does look pretty spindly !

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0030.jpg

Next trick is the give the engine bay a real good clean and check out where the P/S is leaking fluid and sort that out. Then mount the Ls1 computer, wiring harness etc etc.

Moving along slowly.

Hahaha Andy, I usually take a few pics each time I do something worth looking at. I'm just tinkering away with this one. Slow and steady.

XUV, BLOWN12 is exactly that. '92 streetfightered GSXR11 taken to 1216 with Wiseco Busa Forgies and an intercooled blow thru turbo set up.
I've had the bike picking the front wheel up at 235ks across the line at the Perth motorplex in top gear. So yeah, it's quite powerfull :)

Okay, so I've been slack with this car.
Other two wheeled projects, laziness and hot weather eroded my resolve to get a move on. But I'm getting back on track now.

So far I've replaced the Porsche bellhousing with the LS1 job via a fancy adaptor which bolts to the torque tube (trans is mounted on the diff).

One issue that cropped up was that in order to remove the old engine mounts to fit the LS1 adaptor mounts, I need to drop the steering rack out as the mounting bolts are hidden away above the rack :(
I got that sorted last night. Turned out to be pretty easy.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0007bellhousing.jpg

Clown Power.
Not as good as a V8.
Obviously, the car is in reverse.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0006bomb.jpg

Next drama.
I foolishly assumed that the commodore engine mounts would be the same as the US ones.
So the shiny news ones I have are of no use to me :(
Yay for blowing money on the wrong shit !

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0004mount3.jpg

This is the engine mount adaptor.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0003mountadaptor.jpg

The engine mount I need is actually from a Camaro/Firebird 1998-2002 so I contacted the good people at CMP (Chris Mills Performance) and Paul there thinks he has the right mounts available so i'll be heading to see him tomorrow and hoping he has the right one.

I'm dead keen to drop this motor in sooner rather than later. Hopefully this weekend.
I also hope my extractors fit. If not, i can go to stock manifolds and sell off the extractors for what they cost to be ceramic coated.

Boganspeed
18-05-2010, 03:04 PM
Not so good news.
CMP can't help with mounts so I've got the conversion kit supplier in the U.S. to send a couple of mounts across.

In the mean time, does anyone have any links to companies that sell different types of pipes and pods and cold air inductions etc ?
I'd like something that maybe goes straight forward from the motor, includes a filter and opens out over the top of the radiator.

But i have some room to be tricky if I need to.

For the intake trial fit a commodore OTR and see whether it fits, otherwise a corvette intake may do the job.

So, the big day came today, time to drop the donk in and answer a couple of questions that were nagging me in the back of my mind.

with plenty of bolts and some help from my good mate Shayno, we managed to get the donk in.

I had a rush of shit to the brain the other day and decided I will do the righty and get a mod permit for it. Which means making it quiet, so off came the stractors and on went the stock manifolds.

I was really concerned about the placement of the exhaust in relation to the steering shaft, turns out I was right to be.
The manifold outlet points straight at it, with the kit coming from the USA, they dont have this issue of course as the left manifold runs closer to the motor.
So the right hand manifold had to come off and I'll have to make a custom set of headers, or maybe just the RHS one if I'm lucky. I'll think that one over.

But, it's in and don't it look good !

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/shayno.jpg

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0019a.jpg

One good thing is that my engine covers fit, I might change the colour though, we'll see.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n249/blowngsxr11/100_0022a-1.jpg

Boganspeed
30-05-2010, 06:56 PM
The other thing I was unhappy about is getting under this bloody car with my fat arse, so we went to Shayno's work this morning, chopped up some scrap steel and tacked them together.

These sections are 200 wide by 100 high.
So with two welded together on the bottom, the base is 400 wide and it gives me 300mm under the wheels.

So there's now plenty of room to get under the car. We put some angle iron on the front blocks to stop the car from rolling...'cos that would be bad.

These will make my life a lot easier while I finish all the bolt ups and we start making our own exhaust system.

very interesting project mate, ive only ever driven 2 of these cars, one manual and one auto, gave me the impression i was driving a german version of a corvette! there is definately something in them that appeals to me over the 911 types of a few ive driven. i wonder how much h.p the original transmission will handle?

They have the strength to handle the power of a TT on the Porsche engine.....but if it does blow, i'm sure a Corvette gearbox can be modded to fit :D

mmmm, power is one thing torque is another, as im sure you would know tone, TT doesnt mean the trans can handle a bit of stick from a 5.7, a lot would depend on how its driven, but you wouldnt bother unless you were going to plan on using all available kw at least now and then, so my question is does anyone know what hp/torque a man or auto trans in one of these 928's can handle :)

Boganspeed
30-05-2010, 11:52 PM
Good question Spank, 928specialists in the USA is a company that specialises in supercharging 928's and they tell me the stock trans will handle 500ft/lbs of torque without a problem.

Renegade Hybrids, who sold me the conversion kit, said the same thing.

There were two reasons why I went with an LS1 instead of an LS2 or 3. One is cost and the other is that LS1's aren't a particularly grunty engine. At least as standard. I had this in mind so it'll be kinder on the trans.
Having said that, Renegade Hybrids do put 500hp motors in these things with mods.
I can do that if I start searching for real power, but I'll probably just drive it as it is and enjoy it first.

The front and rear of these cars have adjustable front and rear suspension as far as I know, I have a 1980 928 I've been thinking about doing this to also but I'm going to try get mine legal and I think ill have to do a brake upgrade to comply
