View Full Version : Feb 09' VE SS - Engine Problems

6 months ago i bought an VE SS brand new. Its currently done 20K on it. 3 weeks ago the engine warning light came on & the engine started to shudder. I drove it to the nearest dealership. They told me that one of the spark plugs was filling with oil even after a quick replacement, the new one again filled up within minutes.
3 weeks on i have been told that it was a piston & ring failure & that another piston & ring needed to be ordered from the states. This however is a 4-5 week waiting period. They also just told me that they believe there are some electrical problems but can't seem to put a finger on it.
The engine has been pressure tested & all seemed to come back ok but its as if they are not telling me the full story. The dealership has now convinced Holden to replace the engine brand new because of the waiting time on pistons?
Question is though, would they really replace an engine just for the sake of a waiting time on piston & ring? It must be more financially viable for them to wait for the parts to come in. Maybe its got something to do with the new AFM shutdown system.
I am just unsure.
Also, they are not able to start the odometer back to zero with the new engine so i am a little angry that a 6 month old car needs a new engine & that i will have a different serial no. compared to the car. This will affect the resale value of it i believe.
What to do is the queston?
Should i be asking for more?
Very angry Holden customer!!

If they're going to give you a new engine I wouldn't be upset. It would probably be cheaper for them to do an engine swap than pull down your current one and fix it. Start smiling you'll get a new engine for free, which is a good thing. You might be without the car for a little while but hopefully not too long.

Its quite common for a short motor to be used to replace a damaged engine, its faster and takes up less labour time in dismantling, measuring and cleaning and then reassembling. Its less expensive working this way and they try tio retain a happy customer. Either way with your engine number it will be swapped on holdens computer and it will have the records updated at the traffic authoritys.

You only needed to start one thread on it, not two.
Cheers :)

Paully, it would be a good idea to post ONE thread ONLY per subject, rather than creating multiple threads and wasting bandwidth.
Please keep it in mind.
Threads merged.

im pritty sure the dealer wont put the clock back to zero as the other drivetrain parts have still done x amount of kms , and also its illegal.

Perhaps they aren't sure what caused the piston and ring failure in the first place, and don't want to just repair it only to find it happens again in 6 months time. Then you'd be really upset. Maybe Holden don't want you without a vehicle for 4-5 weeks, maybe the Holden engineers want to look into it in more detail to prevent it happening in other motors? Whatever the reason you get a new motor. Can't be too unhappy over that.

Seems strange. You reckon you may of some how contributed to its failure?
Not saying it's your fault paully, but just curiosity.
Did you notice anything unusualbefore it shit itself?

Why would you be disappointed in receiving a new engine, rather than having an autopsy performed on yours? Less chance of an assembly related issue arising, plus it's back together quickly.
There is NO CHANCE of the speedo being reset to zero. Besides the fact everything else on the car has done the current distance, it is 100% illegal, as what you want done is fraud, pure and simple.
Having a new engine fitted wont affect your resale one cent. Having a noisy, smoky rebuilt engine at sale time, however, will....:teach:

No, everything was running fine before this happened. Was very surprised. I did give it a bit in the 6 months i've had it but nothing too much. Plus its a V8. Its built for driving it that little bit harder.

Don't about being built that way, just because it's a V8. It's just another mass produced engine.
The reality is a number of buyers seem to think they have bought themselves a V8 Supercar for a $450,000 discount...

A VE SS a supercar:confused: Having had 2 VE SS and no issues what so ever i'd be pissed about engine probs but a new crate engine is a good result
As stated mass produced there's always a few that slip through to the lemon tree!!!!!

The V8 supercar wouldn't last 20k like the engine above did.
