NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford issued the largest single recall in its history Tuesday as drivers of an additional 4.5 million vehicles were alerted about a fire hazard from a faulty switch.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this was the eighth recall, involving a total of 16 million Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) vehicles, concerning the cruise control deactivation switch manufactured by Texas Instruments (TXN, Fortune 500).

The faulty switch can leak hydraulic fluid, overheat, smoke and then burn, and risks causing a fire even when the ignition is turned off, parked and unattended, the NHTSA said.
The risk is elevated for 1.1 million Windstars that were subject to a government investigation, said Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood.

Recalls are a part of life for every manufacturer.
Mitsubishi recently announced a recall on the currect Lancer Ralliart and Evolution models, as a fuel pipe under the bonnet could fracture, and cause "a fuel leak".
Anyone want to translate what a fuel leak in an engine bay can lead to...?

Fire risk re-calls always alarm people more than other re-calls though...

That'll cost em a few bucks.

from the article

"The cruise-control deactivation switches, made by Texas Instruments and sold for about $21, were installed in 16 million Ford vehicles over a decade before the automaker stopped using them in early 2003."

It really depends on what the contractual agreement is between Ford and Texas Instruments.

Texas Instruments could be slugged for the cost of this recall.

Regardless it isn't very good publicity for Ford Mo Co.

(The very first batch of production VT's were 're-worked' at Bosch's expense due to a doggy fuel hose?? on the V6's (i see to recall, but i could be wrong). This was done over the weekend before these cars left the factory. Holden were very lucky to catch it before these cars left for the dealers.)

I wouldn't like to be picking up the tab for that one

I'm sure Texas Instruments will have their feet to the fire on this one. Ford stock will take a dip as well in the marketplace for this, but will return later.
( going on the history of events )

Cheers,
Steve

I just got my notice for the EVO X....joy!
Just like owning a Holden again it brings back those fond dealership memories. In fact my VE had so many recall barcodes on the inside door frame it looked like a supermarket shelf.

A "lateral thinker" might take this as a way of limiting paint fade... :lmao:

I wonder how many vehicles actually get presented for the repair.
