I posted this a while ago but through a update might be in order and may help some people with ideas and direction for Circuit racing set up and the problems I had on the way. Easy to get the initial time down but as per usual the faster you go the harder it is.

To give you a bit of an idea what each mods is worth in lap time. I use Hidden Valley in Darwin.
I used my VX GTS but it would not be much different to other LS1. My car is a daily driver full weight. Each round means a month apart.

Fun day;
Standard trim lap time. (hand timed). 1 min.37sec

Round 1 mods
New wheels and tyres, Yoko 18inch AO48 semi slic. Dorian track timing system now. 1.32.2
Standard 245rwkw.
Summery: Great difference and makes you look like a star with a big heavy car. Great upgrade. Too noisy to use ever day so they are track day only tyres

Round 2 mods
New Federo 2500 brake pads all round, PWR Power Steering cooler, braided brake lines, upgraded master cylinder brace, VZ front cross strut, high temp Motul fluids throughout front to back. Times straight down to a best of 1.28.3.
Summery: The brake upgrades as good as the tyre upgrade. Pedal feel amazing and 0 fade. Can dive very deep into corners and pull up. Fun fun.

Round 3 mods
Very safe mail order tune afr set to 9-10, Race version rip shift, Di fillipo full exhaust system, 918 Comp cams springs, harrop diff cover and brace and ORRSOM ORICAI. Down to 1.27.3
Now 257rwkw.
Summery: The GTS tune is already quite good as is the headers so no real difference. Same with ORICAI. Sound of exhaust and intake upgrade was cool and loud. Rip shift a bit better but the HSV shifter is not too bad already. The other upgrades for reliability Diff cover for cooling. No more big jumps in time reductions. Two of my rotors cracked in this event.

Round 4 mods
New Tein fully adjustable coilover suspension and upgraded DBA 5000 rotors front and 4000 rear. Same size rotors, same calipers and pads as previous. 1.26.7.
Good mod but no real difference to times. The suspension needs time to get set right. Once this is done time will drop. Car feels really tight now and the adjustability is great benefit as it is my everyday car. I now realized how bad the LSD was slipping. Virtually single spinning constantly.

Round 5 mods
Custom tune done (set safe still) and still trialing suspension settings.
Best time was 1.26.5
Power 267rwkw
Summery: Felt a bit better on the straight but without the LSD hardly tell the difference.

Fun day at the track
My stock clutch blew up this week. Went home on the back of a truck after 2 laps.
Summery: That sucks> but was kind of expected. Glad it lasted so long.

Round 6
New Tex Z grip clutch, slave and braided lines went in.
Best time 1.26.3
Summery: This time the master cylinder died after 1 lap on the second race. Could drive it home as it came good again. Could not race but.

Round 7 In progress this month
New Tex twin plate X grip going in, new master cylinder, new steering rack and bushes (big knock and started to wobble), new power steering pump (started to leak). Will be trialing suspension settings again.
Racing on 30 Sept

Round 8 will be October
New Kazz diff coming and on order
Racing End of October. Cant wait to get traction back. Hopefully will see a good .5 to 1 sec drop.

And that should be about it bar the usual maintenance.
Next year. Another set of tyres. Going to trial some RE55 to see the difference. Some time mid year will be upgraded cam, maybe cage (depending how fast I get) and keep trying to get times down. Will still be my daily driver.

To put the times into consideration
Commodore cup cars do about 1.23 - 1.24
Fastest local improved production cars do 1.20
V8 supercars do about 1.10 -11 in races. Faster in the shootout.

Thanks for the info mate and on the subject of Mainlube I'm running both the engine and T56 gearbox oil/s with great success and when I change up to the 4.11 gears I'll be getting the diff oil as well :)

Proberbly cheeper too. The redline gear oil $175 for 1 gallon and the diff was $145 for a gallon. Cha ching. Next time I will plan ahead to get some Mainlube up here. No distrubuters up here either

Tiny bit on take off but it is a pretty slow 1/4 car. With a revised tune it will get quicker but for now that will have to do. I would hope with the new tune and the 4.11 gears to get a very low 13 or maybe even a high 12 but not sure on that.
Even when the car was newish and with upgraded exhaust, tune and ORI it put out 267rwkw but only managed a 13.3. Probably the driver has a bit to do with the average times aswell.

On another note I am attempting to get some time this Sunday on the track day to put the side pipes on. I will try my best. It is a pretty nice noise at full rpm with side pipes. Loud as hell but pretty cool all the same. It is a fun day this weekend too so just cruise around with passengers and scare them a little bit with some late braking. In the past people enjoy the feeling under brakes more than acceleration, noise etc.
I will have some vids up Monday/Tuesday. Even some under car video will be happening

The paint touch up were during the week and yep it took a while. Tad annoying but they got busy. They sponsor me so I fit in between the jobs which is fair enough. Yesterday I had to do a bolt to the tyre shop to change tyres so that is what I was doing on baggot. The sponsorship decals started going on yesterday lunch and should be finished today (hope). I am getting the big logos done by a pro but I will do all the little simple one myslef next week.

Racing starts about 10.30. There is a number of blokes coming down from the local car clubs and a few new to the NT race cars. Should be a good day and if the weather is like today not that hot. If you dont see me you might hear me with the side pipes. There is passenger rides too I believe. I have a few people booked in but depends if they show up. Drop buy anyway.

I will get some video up of the day too

Well early day AGAIN. Dam back drivers tyre got a puncture or more like the side wall crack. Dont know what is causing it as it is the second time it has happended but different tyres. These tyres were done anyway so I will put the AO48 on for the next round and get a spare wheel to put the new RE55 I bought a month or so ago.
Best time was a 1.26 in the early practice but no clear track. In the Lapsprint second practice I got a 1.27.1. Again porshe and Merc AMGs holding me back.

THe car was behaving pretty badly today as I had pretty bad OVERSTEER. I never thought that would be possible. Only change I did was raise the back about 1 inch for the bling wheels but that and a slowly deflating tyre was all it needed by the looks. I will fix that next outing.

As for the sponsorship logos I am pretty happy and to date the feedback has been good.

What do people think. In case you are wonding what The Avenue means is a apartment development going in next door to Hastings Over Mindil in Darwin city. 2 x 14 story towers with 211 aparements and heaps of office space, some resturants, cafe, child care and more. There is apartments set aside for first home buyers so people do not have to battle against investors. Start about March 2010 and finish 2 years after that in March 2012.

Anyway some picks of the car. There is a few more small logos to go on but generally that will be it

Cheers Tim and Garry. Showed the sponsors today and they are really really happy. I remembered why the tyres are letting go as these ones were the cheap set I bought. They were new but had a old date of 2004 on them. Makes sense now why the sidewalls are failing. They lasted pretty good anyway.
In the bin they go. I will eather put the AO48 or the slicks on for the next meet. Next year I will get some brand new AO48 for IP anyway.
For now all I want to sort is the tune as I think I am loosing more and more power as the days get hotter.

Couple more photos from the local track photographer. Comes up pretty good and stands out nicely.
Boy it stands out on the street. It is hard work driving around when just about every car that goes past someone it looking out the window at the car. One bloke today was just egging me on to rev it so he could hear it. I even had a bloke at the traffic lights say out the window looks sh(t hot mate. Fckn Awesome. Do you race it. and on we went chatting.

Seems the sponsorship is doing its job. Just need the car a little faster and I will be happy even more

Maybe your sponsors signage would look good on my Monaro? I could always use better brakes, cam, trans cooler..............:)

I reckon you must be way down on power because that orange FPV (Boss 290) was keeping up with you on the early laps. When are we going to see the vids?

The money starts as of the last round. Wish it was back dated and save me heaps. Basically any race related failures gets either fixed or the price is split if it is a big problem, I get the LPG paid for (about $45 now so cheap there), tyres paid for and any panel damage suffered either repaired or split cost again it is big damage. That is pretty good going and a whole heap of work to get it arranged. Firggen hours and hours actually. Not a bad deal for them as it is possible one race meet could cost them a tank of juise only and the next it could be a big issue. Most stuff ont he car is pretty strong now but I am not planning on buggering things. BTW upgrades are still up to me and no outside help there unless someone want to offer. I have room on the car still. He he

There is no doubt I am down on power and on top of that the suspention was set wrong causing real bad oversteer. I forgot to lower the car again after fitting the big bling wheels so the rear camber was way out.
He has done into the high 1.25 in the past but was doing 1.27 on Sunday. I did 1.26 and 1.27 for the time I was out there so things were pretty slow.

As for the vids I had the DVR set on the wrong setting so the bloody thing come out in black and white. My mistake and all sorted now so I will have good video on the meet at the end of November.
Sorry about that and i am spewin too. The difference between pressing a button during from NTSC and PAL formatting a hard drive. Doeh.

Here is the video. Short, low quality, in black and white and no sound. As mentioed I have fixed it up now for the next round. Also the setting did not allow the speed, gps, lap timeing via distance reading, mapping, gforce etc to work either. It will be better and will be pretty cool vid once sorted.

Inspired by your Hollywood epics Listy, I've purchased a ContourHD video camera and installed it in the car for the first time today. Going to take the Monaro out on the track on the 29th for the first time so it will be good to see how the camera holds up. Do they allow suction cup mounts for lapsprints?

I've included a 22 second clip of my 13 minute journey to work today. It's early morning with the sun directly in the lens and sound a bit quite because I forgot to take off the plastic covering the mic. (Turn the sound up)

It's HD (720p) with a frame rate of 30fps. Tomorrow I'll switch to SD which reduces the field of view from 135 to 90 degrees, but with 60fps.

I hope you don't mind if I post it here. I didn't want to start a new thread but may after the fun day if I get some good vids.

They come up pretty good. Good resolution on them and bugger me 60fps you could get some great slow motion video. Some people like the wide angle lens and some dont but depends on the view I think. I run around with a few different systems mainly for testing for a company and the collection is pretty huge (about 10 different systems now). I am just seeing which is best for what use and the like so they can be sold as packages. Some ups and downs but we are getting there.
For a bit of fun I am running 8 cameras at the end of the month (2 x 4 channel mobile DVRs) so I think I should get all the angle covered. It is for testing use so it is not like I will do it all the time. 4 is plenty for me.

It should be fun again on the 28th and we are allowed passengers too. I have a spare wheel coming up and a spare tyre so no more blowouts buggering up my days racing.

This month has been flat out so no time for car stuff but the GTS has been getting some photos done for the sponsors and they have some good plans coming including media coverage of the car etc. I even get a free polish and detail before photos.

One thing is for sure the bloody thing stands out like a sore thumb on the roads.

Here is a little bit of video as a pure demo from Anthonys S2000. Sorry to cut it short but plans are coming with the race video. I will put some up that wont be used this month. I even got some from a road bike racing at hidden valley. Love to show it but can not just yet.

YouTube- Anthony warm up lap 1 at Hidden Valley recorded on RaceVid 1000 DVR

and another good old darwin drunk driver. Bit hard to see but watch him cross from one side to the other. Ignore that noise at the beginning as it was a sneeze next to the mic.

YouTube- Darwin drink driver yet another. Recorded on Car-n-Truck Blackbox 2000

and there is plenty more car, bike videos on there all part of the testing we have been doing. Spewing about this one as when I put it in the car I must of touched the lens and it smudged bit time. Good video otherwise.

YouTube- Bazz out in his new IP racing Commie. Recorded on the StreetBox 2000 DVR from InCarDVR

and this is what happens when you forget to preview the video before recording. That was me in the GTS and was just the warm up lap.

YouTube- No time to set up video. Recorded on the RaceVid 1000

Here's the standard definition setting. Not too bad I'm thinking and it doubles the amount of recording time from HD. Still some windshield refections when driving towards the sun and I thought that 60 fps would be a little smoother (note the passing traffic in the middle of the vid). And what would a NT vid be without the obligatory Prado 4x4 cutting in front of another 4x4.

Next test will be at night under street lights, but the lens isn't designed for low light so I suspect it's going to be a little ordinary.

That is usual darwin stuff there. There is some good night vision camera out there.

THis is a bit of testing with a IR camera. Turn night into day. I am testing this one for the company with a normal camera, gforce, gps, speed etc and this night vision is the second camera so for night use. Works well. Same deal I can not show the good video atm.
You can set the camera to block out the headlights, streetlights etc to get better picture without the big bright spots. On the driving video I have this turned on and it works great.

Check this vid out. No warning and a slight holy sh&t moment

YouTube- Little bit of water on the windscreen. Recorded on the Car-n-Truck Blackbox 2000

This is the set up I have in the GTS for this weekend.

4 channel DVR with 25 fps per channel so full speed on all 4 video channels. Looking forward to some great video on this one. The settings are on hyper resolution so as good as you get.

I also have the small 2 camera blackbox system running so i can get some more incar video, the Gforce, speed and out of car video. Should be good for the passengers so they can get videos of their rides.

THe camera positions are there too. I cheated with one of the views with some V8 supercar video of the brakes.
Note that some cameras are in the dark and are in IR mode so they apear black and white. Once they are in the open they will go to full color

Have not got a discount for it but I am writing letters to see if I can. These are designed for people to do the right thing on the roads as everything you do is on video including speed. Great for insurance though for tailenders etc.

First up is the nice trophey for this years win in my racing class. Somewhat suprised that is for sure.

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/HSVListy/100_0868.jpg

The race fun day today went well. Car was great. I had two pretty long sessions of about 25 minutes each and did about 15 or so laps each one in pretty clear track so most were at reasonable speed. Best I got was 1.27.0 so still plenty away from my best time of 1.24.10. Yesterday was not flat out though as there was passengers etc allowed. The tyres were a bit hard to get used to compared to the RE55 but I started to get there towards the end. You might here some comments on the video. Put it this way RE55 grip better in the turns and the good old understeer was back. Not overly fussed at all and better than oversteer. (excluding the fun factor)

Also I have decided enough is enough and I need to get the tailshaft done. The donuts are at the end of their lift I am sure of it. You can just feel a tiny vibration come through. Job for next month no ifs or buts.

I have a couple of videos. There is some more angles at the end of the first vid too. I am still working on the audio to combine the vids up so I will get some more video up during the week and make a nice 10 minute video. I am going to use Adobe Premier to get the Picture in picture happening and combine all the views, audio etc.

Note they are both low resolution videos to get a quick upload for people to see. No sound on the second one fyi. Some better res vids on their way
Pretty cool how hot the brakes get. The camera view worked great (I had 8 cameras in there so there is plenty to come.

I am finially getting the 4.11 in on Monday/Tuesday and get the new preload crush bearing in at the same time to rid the clunk I get. Also getting some nice new redline oil in there too.

I have busy month ahead with some track days and a private track day with the sponsors so that should be good.
I have a car display going on too so it will be good to be out helping out the sponsors and talking car all day. Bit of work but it is all good at the end of the day
We will be booking the valley for some free 3 or 4 lap sprints with passengers who are involved with the cars sponsorship. Get free track time and some practice with the new diff ratio so no complaints here.

I am replacing the tailshaft donuts for now as I had to postpone getting the Carbon Fibre single piece tailshaft. I need the car going to get to these private and practice track days and can not risk problems using a new product.

I will get some more photos up of the events and some track time. I am giving

Totally off topic this is what I got video of from the avalanche today. It was from the incar camera system. It is there to look after me in case of dickheads on the roads do stupid things like in the past.

And this is a really bad attempt of getting Picture in Picture. I am getting better at it and will have it sorted in a few days. I will get some old video up and overlay the multiable camera views. The timeing is out ont he one below
The quality is very low as I downloaded it wrong. I will get a better one up in the next few days and use all 4 camera views.

The car got a write up in today paper.

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/HSVListy/100_1099.jpg

As you can see when you read it, it says 550rwkw but it is supposed to say 550 hp. I did say down south it made 320rwkw so I think that is where the confusion come in. Either way all good and people will know what they mean as people know the car well locally. The news lady was not a car person so it was really difficult to explain things as can be see by some of the wording and spelling.

Pretty wrapped to get it in there.

Good write-up there Listy. It won't be long before you progress from street racing champion to street racing legend:bow:

The full stop after 24 seconds makes it look like your only .17 seconds off the best V8 supercar time. It's good to see a really fast car in the "my ride" section instead of the usual old farts and their gogo mobiles.

It's got to keep the sponsors happy too with the extra publicity:goodjob:

They are fine. Only 60k on them. I always run them in top oil from day dot. I also changed the diff oil every 5000km due to circuit racing duties. Same with engine and gearbox. Better to be sure.

I did some timing today on the Gforce meter.
Results were
0 to 60mph on LPG
Run 1: 5.6 (traction control on)
Run 2. 5.6 (track on)
Run 3: 5.3 (traction control off)
Run 4. 5.1 (tract off)
Run 5 with the car on petrol: 5.3 (traction control off)

Also measuring from the graphs on the LM2 meter it seems smack on the money and accurate.

So not bad. With a bit more effort with the take off it would be a flat 5 I think.
THe best I did before the mods, LPG, 4.11s etc was 5.3 at that was in the dry season after heaps of tries and over a number of days.
The 4.11s, I am liking and once you get some reves into it you do notice the difference compared to the 3.9s. The reves build quicker and it really smacks the rev limiter when you just get past 100km/h. I like

I am in the process of working out some minor plans 2010. I will do IP Open class and some streetcar shootout this season along with drifting. Bit of a all round year so no real championship running this year.
I proberbly will get some 18 x 9.5 inch all round with some 285 Re55 rubber all round. Also I will join the drift club to get some drifting practice in. Always wanted to try it so before I go full time IP next year I will have some fun.
I will use the car as a everyday car again this year.

Basic plan for this year is
Tune mid Feb and depending on the result maybe another cam so I know the specks
Try and get the new tailshaft purchased but I have just done the donuts on the old one so not too sure when I will do it now. Not really neccessary as I dont have the power to justify it but good to have to reduce weight and lots less rotating force being Carbon Fibre and only 6kg in total including the billet unis
Some new wheels and tyres as per above
Hopefully some new suspension like Blisteins or similar
Some minor other suspenion mods like roll bars etc

But for now the car needs a good service which will happen early feb.

The GTS poped up in the latest Street Commodores as part of the cruise for Charity 6

Yes there is a spot of blue in there so it would be worth getting a copy.

Once you join the drifting club you get some sponsporship arrangements with a tyre company up here so they get really cheap tyres or you get the pick of the second hand ones that people leave at tyre shops when they get new mags.

I have not idea how I will go drifting but part of the fun is trying.

I am getting this guage put in over the coming weeks. I know I dont have boost but it had a digital readout so I plan on putting a camera and watching the readings so I can replay them as picture in picture in my you tube vids. The LM2 guage readings are bloody good and I can intergrate them into the PIP but just too time comsuming and hard to match the time with the video. This way it is all from one DVR and a simple PIP mode from Adobe Premier and it is all done in minutes.

Got all the good stuff I need and in fast reading digital too. All the senders are included too. Might help with the 4.11 gears to get my but into gear to shift faster with that giant red light.

Progress has been slow as I have been waiting on some results from a retune for local conditions. That is being done on the 22nd Feb at Hidden Valley. We managed to book the track for 4 hours to ourselves so we can get some tuning laps done in the proper real life conditions. Should be good

The new 4.11 seem ok but I have allot of slack in the diff so I will be pulling them out again (3rd time) and starting again with the preload etc. I though it was just a adjustment but seems not to be. My mechanic says it is the gear sets but I will get them checked again and go from there. Either way it is still fine bar the on off throttle slackness. The trutrak preload was sorted now and no clunking when selecting gears from stationary so now it is too slack. I will get it sorted one way or another.

So new front brake pads and some new Yoko 050 R spec tyres coming. If I do IP racing I will still have the A048 here.

This year I will be doing the lapsprint with some racing in IP open on occasion. The lapsprint is laping with a car that does the same speed. One on one racing I guess.

Tuning went well yesterday at Hidden Valley with some good gains. Naturally we got there and it was in the middle of a downpour but it did partly dry out and give us some decent track time. We ended up taking the whole day. I will get some video up later at I took plenty of it.

Regards to the tuning the car runs better, more mid and high end power and it keeps pulling all the way to 7000 rpm now instead of flatish from 4500 upwards. Over all very happy.
The 02 sensor was playing up by the end of the day so that put a shunt on things to get the car perfect. Steve thinks it was getting too hot and not showing right. It was too late and we were nacked to change it. Also the battery decided to properly jin us around at the end so I am getting a new battery in now and go down to the dyno to finish off the tune. The tune is 95% right but right up the top rpm range it is still not set spot on in the right afr area. It is TPS fueling under 3700 and map over that. Certainly is different to drive and so much smoother. It pulls right through the rev range now which is great. The blokes watching could hear the car much more sharper.

I picked up about 10km/h down the straight which is dam good considering the drag the supercar wing has. I am going to take some angle out and do some trials next weekend.
Best I saw on the speedo was just on 220km/h and that is on a slight wet track, slow entry speed and early braking so there is more in it yet for sure.
I will see how we go on the dyno later today.

The other few blokes went well and some good speed was found.

Overall very happy and looking forward to Sunday race meet.
Video coming soon.

Cheers for that. New Yoko 050 265 wide tyres and retuned it should give some gains. It is a bit more of a handful but if the track is dry that should be much easier to control.

Also on a side note Steve recons the cam in it is in the mid to high 230s. The 8TB is calming it down so it still sound quite calm. Now it is tuned it is pulling right through to 7k which is just perfect. Hopefully the final touch up on the dyno will get the afr spot on. It was a challenge to tune even for Steve. Spent hours on it and there will be more this arvo.

Big thanks to APS performance center for allowing access to the tune in there now. Saved allot of mucking around with a new PCM and all that.

We put it on the dyno this arvo and the voltage problem was still there. The problem apeared late yesterday so we never logged voltages. The alternator was putting out votage from 12 to 13.2 and that is it. It was all over the place when the problem did happen but it only happen sometimes. So naturally this has caused issues with the afr and other things like LPG pumps, coils etc.
In short new alternator required but the tune it very close. It will do for now and still set safe.

It realed of 290rwkw top but averaged 286rwkw. It made no difference with bonnet up or down which is great to know.

Tyres are all on now. They are a fair bit thiner than the RE55. RE55 measure 275 actual tread and these measure 260. They fit on the 9 inch wheels a bit better.

THat is a fair bit less tread to the ground so the compound must be good to do better than the same size RE55.
Sunday we find out but by the looks the monsoon will still be here so I am guessing a wet and slow track day. Shame but there might be patches of dry track if we are lucky.

As for the noise driving on the street holy crap loud. Wooowowoowoow. If you ever think about these for street use get some extre noise insulation. Loudest semi slicks I have ever heard and I have had a few different brands.

Also I have been doing some reading and aparently it is not at all uncommon for alternators to die or have problems after power steering leaks so keep an eye out of that. My PS line leaked after I got it back from down south due to a loose connection and it would of been directly over the alternator. The volts issues could of gone back the far too as I have always thoughi the issues related to the tune. Thankfully repaired lines and a new PS pump later is all sorted and a new alternator going in tomorrow.
I will go on the same dyno tomorrow as before the tune to do a run to check the afrs has settled down and to get a back to back run on the same dyno. I will put the sheet up to compare new with old.

Cheers for the comments but no racing tommorrow now

Petrol fuel pump decided today of all days to die on me. After filling up with LPG at the local servo after scrutineering I went to start the car and it kicked over for a second then stopped. Found a blown fuel pump fuse so replaced that and still no fuel. Checked and swapped relays and no go. Tried all the LPG to petrol relays and the security system but no change. After getting it home I got my meter and power is going to the pump but that is it. Only a 8 month old Walbro 255l/h one too. Too late and no spares to think about changing it.

So I will be spectating tommorrow now.
The spoiler did not like going on a toe truck either so there is some damage to the brakets and fibroglass so that is another thing that will have to be fixed now too. Expensive dam week. Maybe next month I will have more luck and get out and get these tyres tested and the revised tune.

Such is life. Hopefully get a new pump up here by Wednesday and get the car on the road Thursday. :vpo:

Seems I missed out on a very fun drift and drive day last sunday at the valley. Would of been good fun but not that good for brand new expensive race tyres

I managed to upload a couple of the tuning laps of hidden valley in full HD. 400+MB upload.
If you have a fast computer click on the 360 bit and the option to play in HD 1080 will come up. My computer poos itself and only plays bits of it at a time and the sound and video is all out of wack. On the normal 360 to 720 setting it is fine and plays normal but not as full HD resolution. Very clear video and once I am doing quick laps it should be great. I am still playing with the sound settings too so that will get better next time

Next meet is the end of this month and also a drag night coming up so plenty more video to come.
As for the fuel pump it should be here tomorrow and planned to be fitted up Friday so I can get on the Dyno Friday arvo to check the afrs out at wot.

One cover is for the fuse panel and the other for the cruise contol box. I will have the car back tuesday so I will put all the gear on then and get some photos up. It is carbon fibre sheet and it does look pretty good and well made. PITA getting them as the supplier was so slow but eventually come through. I would say where from but I dont recommend people paying then waiting and sending the 20 odd emails chasing to get them sent. They were custom made to suit. They used to make them but now it is made to order

The master cylinder brace is from uniqueautosports. It was about $90 but was custom made. I think they have some in stock. Mine fitted fine but have heard that others were no so lucky and the holes did not line up properly.

Bit of a summery of the days racing. The car went well today with no problems, faults etc. Basically spot on. Bloody good day with a bit of everthing. Running in traffic, driving in pouring rain and going flat out for a few laps too. Fantasic day all round. Great to have some power, the right rev limit and good tyres.

Timings for general info
Best time for the flying lap 1.29.8 (starting from scratch from the start finish and doing one full lap). That is pretty good aparently but no idea. I managed one clear lap and got a best of 1.24.5.
Best lap in the pouring rain and aqual plainging over top the water across the road was 1.41.5. People lineed up along the main straight watching as the GTS went past as they said the rooster tail was friggen awesome to watch and a crazy ass driver pulling full speed down the straight. The tyres must move some water as it really felt dam good in the wet. I have some helmet cam video and will upload soon.
Best speed session was without traffic as I started first but I did over do it on a couple of corners with some understeer and a couple of average gear changes. Three timed laps 1.30.5 (out lap), 1.24.8 and 1.24.7
My PB is a 1.24.1 but that was a one off in perfect cool weather and new tyres and I have never repeated that time. Put it this was I have never done two laps in a row in the 1.24s.

Overall real happy. Naturally plenty of video to come as I think I had most angles covered

Also to add.

The Yoko 050 Tyres went well too. Very consistent for the three laps sprints as can be seen below. No problems at all. I used to do 1.27 but now down to 1.24 consistently with open track. I am running about 15rwkw extra power from last time too so that needs to be taken into consideration. Big thanks to
Steve from Oztrack tuning as the car is so much better to drive on the circuit. Seemed quicker and so good to have the rev limit on 7000 as it suit hidden valley really well. Cheers mate.

The first lap is the out lap so is slower as you start front the start finish line stationary. Not bad getting the two laps within 0.05 of a second.

This is me starting on the front of the grid and catching cars before even getting a lap in. They fixed that the next session. A 1.29.8 is not bad for a standing start lap.

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/HSVListy/100_1962.jpg

This is the laps where it was wet as buggery. The good old GTS was lapping 5 seconds faster than the next best. Not sure if that was me being stupid or just well sorted car on good tyres.

Great driving all day especially in that wet patch :goodjob:

Cheers Dave. You are dam quick on street tyres and with some semis you will be right there if not faster. That car of your rips down the straight so dam quick. I got to 219 by the end and you were pulling away the whole way down the straight.

Now for those that like videos I have stacks. Both wet and dry and all sorts of different camera systems in the car. 4 different systems all up and 8 cameras running.

I stayed for a hour at the drags tonight.

I did 3 runs and went then went as I thought after the 14.0 I better leave once I got the 13.5.

13.9 at 105mph
14.0 at 105mph
13.5 at 105mph

THe 60ft no idea as it was not working. Kinda suprised as I picked up nearly 10km/h down the hidden valley main circuit straight after the tune yet nothing at the drags. Not real quick at all 105mph.
Not that I have a fast car to notice but some were saying it was slippery as and the 10-11 second cars were doing mid 12 even with slicks.

I have plenty of incar video to come

I have the next circuit racing meet on Sunday 18th April.

I am definitively taking the two front seats out and putting the race seat in. Race seat goes in Monday and the passenger seat I will take out when I do the exhuast at the track

I also plan on changing the exhaust over to the side pips to drop some weight and for some extra noise. I will have to do this at the track. Total should be about 100kg or so less weight. Other than the carpet and sound deading there is not much more I can rid.
I will have a couple of cameras on board as usual for some video.

Question for people? I am not sure what to look at for the under car video. Anyone got some ideas or areas you would like to see video off. Also any thoughts of special angles people would like to see from inside or outside the car. I have 8 cameras with two mobile 4 channel DVRs so plenty to go around.
Let me know

These are the DVRs I am using. Both are about the same length as a pen, 4 channels at 25fps each channel with gps etc. I use a combination of bullet and box with variable lens sizes. I have special impact resistant cameras for under car video

Nope. I can not get my race licence due to medical reason so bit of a bugger. I will try again next year and hopefully the specialist will sign me off to race. I have a crook back.

That is some quick cars there and will be great to watch. I am not sure of the locals and how many they will have this year but having some of the fast cars up here might bring out more cars.

I am enjoying what we are doing atm with the lapsprints so not overly fussed.

HSV Listy,

Awesome setup on the GTS! Great read on the progressive changes.

Any word of advice on the shifter? You mentioned in an earlier post that the 'Rip shift a bit better but the HSV shifter is not too bad already'. Have you done anything different with the shifter since?

I'm running a VY Clubsport for the occassional track day, but my biggest issue at the moment relates to smooth / quick enough selection of 3rd gear... (which is getting worse) Running a racing clutch but still have the standard HSV shifter. About to install a rip shifter next month but hoping to get some advice on whether there is something better to consider?

I have only used the rip shifter and it seems to work well. Very clean and accurate shits. It was a difference by a margain but the noise from the race version was a inital pain but I got used to it. The origanal shifter was ok but the rip shifter allowed more accuracy which is importaint getting through the gears fast. I have not tried any others like Harrop etc.
One of the lock out on the rip shifter came loose for some reason and caused a overshift and buggered up several components in the box. Good idea every 12 months to get these lock out checked IMO.

Thanks for the advice on the shifter, especially the 12 month check.

I'm leaning toward the street rip shifter given the noise factor of the race version. I'm told there isn't too much difference in durability...

No worries at all

Summery of todays racing

Smashed my PB something fierce. Down to 1.22.50. (old PB was 1.24.10). Way faster than I would of ever amagined this car could go but prooven wrong there.

It felt really good and having the race seat in was great. So much more comfy. The side pipes were on and dam noisy so it took a little be for me to get used to the racket. I think they cost me some power as I could only get 215 down the straight. Last meet I was doing consistent 220km/h

So a reason why I was 2 seconds quicker I simply dont know. The overall weight saving would of been about 30kg with the seat out and side exhaust. But with that the side pipes they cost me power and speed. I did feel better with the race seat and with it the cars seems easier to push harder.

Either way I am wrapped and the car has performed beyond what I ever imagined. I have never even considered this car or me hitting the 1.22s. Never ever.

I have some videos but I run out of time last night to get the 4 channels ones all sorted fully and tested so I am not sure what videos I will get. Next time I am just going to do one 4 channel. Also the noise was so lound I have no idea what the noise quality will sound like. It was staight out the cats and exit on the drivers side
The specators said it sound friggen awesome. I did not get any outside car video so hopefully I find someone that had a camera down there today and grab a copy off them. You could hear the car the entire lap of Hidden Valley so people could tell if I was lifting off in sections or need to grow some more you know whats.

Where to go from here I have no friggen idea. I am LOST what to do.

thanks for any help, i,m issolated in the country, local mechanics are good with tractors etc.

Hi and welcome. Funny you ask about fuel pumps and I have had a couple of issues of late. It found out to be me running very low fuel all the time so not a fault of the pump.

I would say you would have a upgrade in there already as Sams would not send a 450hp forged car without it. I would say a Walbro from Injectors Online would be the go (about $190). I guess Sams would provide them too. They are a proven intank pump and 95% do agree they work well. Might be a good idea to chat with sams as I dont want to lead you into a misdirected direction and advise of something not suited to your engine.

As for replacement of the pump make sure you have below 1/4 of fuel in the tank before even starting to save dropping fuel. Allow about 3 hours for a handly man to do the job. Do it on a hoist if you can get one and it would be quicker. Just do a quick bleed with ignition on after connecting and put a new fuel filter in too unless it was just changed.

Cheers. I will have to get a engine like that one of these days but this thing just keeps on living even though it is put through hell.

About 500 with the mods to the headlights. Takes a bit to fit right though as being fibroglass and then going racing a couple of extra brackets were put in just for good measure. Monkey Warhouse do them.
The car looks like it is up in the air and it is too. I could drop it a solid 2 inchs but the height work for weight transfer under braking and also quite practiable on the street. Once I upgrade the suspension with decent spring rates I will drop it all round to a more aero height.

To clear up. THe front bar is modified a bit and the headlights on the car stay the same (mine are just monoro style for a bit of a different look but still to suit the HSV headlights). The monkey warehouse front bar is designed for a monaro so they have the rounded corners on the lights. The HSV and calias has the lights that come to a corner.

sorry if this question has already been asked.

i have found in a couple of cars, that i can break harder without ABS kicking in, then when it does. of course for road use it is the best invention ever, breaking and control. cant beat that.

but like the V8 supercars, do you disable it so you can get the most out of your braking system?

I leave it be. Maybe with road tyres that may be an issue but semi slicks my ABS never comes on or that I noticed anyway. Even when I raced in the wet a couple of months ago it never came on
No harm to leave it be as if you ever go too quick into a corner and you need a save it might come in handy.

I finally got the car back and the battery job has been done. Still need to get the battery yet but I will get into a shop Thursday for one of those sealed ones and a cover. The battery isolator has been removed and will be put in the boot. The thing is when I actually tested the isolator it isolated the battery but did not shut off the engine. I found out that the alternator supply was not connected at all so power was stil coming fromt he alternator. Not much point of having a isolator without turning off the engine. Rather poor but at least I found it now.
Those with battery isolator just check them and make sure they isolate the battery and also shut off the car

The down side of all this cash is the voltage fluctuation issue is still there but no where near as bad. It comes and goes but mostly very faint lights dimming etc. The voltage is much more stable now and only changing 1 volt instead of 3 or so before all the work was done.

The battery job Left the engine bay a bit messy and one of my new billet caps for the washer has vanished presumably on the road somewhere so I have some cleaning to do. The pods are cracking worse and being held together by tape at the moment so after this weekend we will have to do the big job of the tray and individual filters. All we will do is a big tray and 8 K & N speedway filters. I will get the tray CF wrapped to keep with the same look

As for the carbon fiber tail shaft I am still trying to get hold of Gforce so hopefully they sort things out but now there is no racing after this weekend i am in no rush anymore. They are moving shop and impossible to get hold of.

So we will see how things go this weekend. I have the race seat in and weighing up the odds of exhaust on or off as it costs me speed but good for the crowd. People still talk about how good it sounds but we will see. As always I will have a number of camera systems running in my car and a few others. I have a new 4 channel version that does all 4 videos in 720x572 at 25fps and uses a SD card so a very unique bit of kit and a one off. Only 10x8x2 cm in size and 250grams.

Bit of a mixed bag today racing. Managed a best time of 1.22.8 in the first session I was out the front on my own again for that one and honestly there was room in it and I could of gone faster I recon.

Round two I was lined up against the prosport race car (a radical looking car on full slicks) on the front row. I had a bad, start and missed a gear and he got away. I was behind him the next three laps. It was fast as hell down the straght and I had no chance but caught up in the corners and potentially pass but too risky. Also he had no brake lights and I was too scared to get too close. I had the race car Lotus on slicks sitting on my tail the whole way around too.

The third session I was lined up third on the grid and got a blinder of a start and started to catch the lotus and prosport car and got about 2/3 the way around and the dam thing changed to petrol on me so that ended that so I putted around one more lap and decided to give up and go get fuel. I did not realised that would be a dnf as I still posted a time. The rules say you come last so I was put in the second lapsprint group in last place for round 4. First to last in one day.

Forth outing was just fun and it was just too much speed difference and many of the blockes were first timers. Thay came and saw me after the race and said it was awesome having a car like that lapping with them. Like 5 blokes came up and was saying that was cool having you there.

And that is it until next year due to the drag strip and hidden valley upgrades. Long time between drinks.

The battery in the boot sucked too as it just cranks over (just). Must be the wires or somthing so I am putting it back in the engine bay.

Plans ahead: Not sure but I really need to do something about the power issue and getting more staight line speed. I might go to slicks next year too to join with the other guys. Also I could do racing class but depends on getting the race licence or not.

Great results, gotta be happy with that. Car really looks the goods too. Its been great watching the car evolve and to hear your experiences. One of my favourite threads on here I reckon with alot very interesting info.
Battery issue is strange, any auto elec should be able to sort the issue out, wouldnt have thought the voltage drop would be that bad considering the size of the wire.
What options are you considering for increasing the power? Cubes? Are there restricitons for modifications in your class of racing?

I got a feeling the wrong wire was used or it is too long. I will get it looked at anyway. I would only go to 6 liters of cubes but try and get as much out of it as possible to offset the cars weight a bit. I want to keep it in the general race class like IP or similar so 6 ltrs and no forced induction.

Hey Listy - just measure the resistance between the battery and the starter motor.

The cable doesn't look to small. I usually use welding flex and crimp the ends with lugs. It may just have a joint that needs a clean and re-clamp to keep the resitance low.

The car in front is a prosport race car and goes like hell. On full slicks too and about 1 inch off the ground. The car behind is a superchared lotus race car with full slicks. Good fun dicing with them. Both them cars togeather was only 2/3 the weight of the GTS.
Biggest problem was the brake lights were not working until he was way low on the pedal so I was far from keen to get to close. Also I had not hope on the straight.

Have you played with the rear droop setting at all to make the front turn a little more? It works wonders if you have the suspension adjustment to do it

Not sure what that means rear droop. I have Teins so the back is just like normal suspenstion with screws height adjustment. There is the coil over mod that can be done through Gforce gear so that could be a good option. I am actually considering that as part of the upcoming suspention upgrade. The car seems good on the corners for now and no real issues with power down on exits etc and as quick as anything local including race cars but severe lack of power compared to mildly tuned Ls1 or others like WRX etc. Underbraking and corners no worries as it seems to go well but some mumbo added with all that it would pick up some good time.

Also about the negative camber at the back it is stock settings as a 4 wheel alignment is too much of a pain before and after each race. Fronts are fine for now. I am pretty happy with it corners and brake wise

Getting more rear neg will help with power down
have a look at the angle of the wheels in relation to each other.
Having little droop enables you to do this -

Pick the inside rear up which helps the front turn mid-corner and reduces understeer. Its less wheel hang. Note the next time you watch a V8 supercar they work on their droop settings carefully :)

Is there a particular reading or just zero.

Well the actual reading will depend on length and CSA of the conductor. Personally I would want it quite low, well well below 1 ohm. The closer to 0.0 ohms the better for Vdrop.

It looks like aluminium conductor? Some kind of 4/0 gauge aluminium stereo stuff. You could try copper conductor (Weld flex used for earthing welders is awesome, very very flexible with a super high strand count in a larger size with crimped terminals would do the job. I have used 16mm2 before and it works ok). Copper is a better conductor than Aluminium.

I could do the calcs for you but I would need to know what the conductor is made of, how large it is etc The variable in it is the connections. Its much easier to just get a good multimeter and measure it.

It seems to be the case of wire type. It is alloy wire so i will get him to rip that out and put welding wire in its place. That should sort it.

I have a few videos from outside the car. Pretty serious bits of kit out there on the weekend. The car in front and behind were both on full slicks. The race car in front the brake lights were not showing up so I was super careful. In the race below I was lapping 1.5 second slower than usual. I could not compete in a straight line but the GTS seemed pretty good under brakes and tighter corners. The higher speed stuff he drove away. Strange saying that for a commodore as it should be the other way around.

Yep I stuffed the start but would of not made a shed of difference catching that.

A few photos of the half done intake tray with the new filters installed. The old intake pods both cracked real bad and were unrepairable. I wanted this set up with more filter area to get it to rev harder. I will use this basic tray measurements to get a fibro mould done up with heat proofing and tidy it all up in carbon wrap. Both the intake trays will be all professional done
The bonnet scoop is in the shop and should be done in a week or two.

Little LPG problem started as the float in the tank seems to be stuck on full and I can not fill it up. I was told to get a mallet and give the tank a bash and it should work. If not it will have to come out.
Paying $1.69 petrol is not fun but will have to do until the LPG is sorted

I am still adjusting to the changed very noisy intake sound of the new filters but getting used to it. It sure reves fast now holy crap having a intake as loud as the exhaust sure is something. The video does not do it justice as the more load the louder it gets

The new battery cables are done too but it did not help much and it still stuggles to start. Tad over that now so it will do until I get the sads with it and put the battery back up front. Also the alternator finially played up while testing and 90% sure that is the cause of the voltage flucations. That will be replaced next week and hopefully allow a proper logs to get the tune finished.
Race wise it is quiet for now but about 3 months before starting again. There is drifting and other events happing so hopefully I get to a few of these.

As mentioned the tray is temporary but will look good once finished.

Finally I have a new tailshaft. Getting fitted next Tuesday so hopefully no dramas with that. Very light at only 7kg for the shaft and both unis at each end. They are flash bits of kit though and rated at way over what power I will ever make.

Also the new intake trays will be made of fibro now and then the carbon fibre mold will be made from that. Apparently the corners are too tight and some more molding is required and it is easier to do with a fibro mold. Not too much trouble and it will be a better finish too.
I should have the fibro done by Friday so i can test fit to get it all done properly.

We have a practice on Sunday at Hidden valley and I think the straight is still 80km/h but could be wrong. If 80km/h straight I might wind the wing up a few notches to bang some extra down force in there.
I will have the data gear all connected too to see what is going on with the engine now that I have the alternator and voltage spike issue resolved. Yea on that. :)

It was a short day as there was only practice. Engine oil came out the dipstick but I guess this was due to the dipstick being relocated. Now the trays are done I will put it back facing upwards instead to the side. I hope that is what the issue is anyway.

I looked at the oil pressure data and there is no issues there. The lowest it got was 48psi and the highest was 72. The low 48psi was only for a split second too. The max Gforce reading for the day was 1.35 in one of the sweepers and reves were about 4000 at that point. The oil pressure was about 55 psi at that point. It seems the cheap intake oil tray insert seems to do the job at hidden valley anyway.
THe new intake filters seem to give a bit more get up and on top of that is was a nice day today. Even with the 40km/h entry speed restruction on the straight I end up getting 214km/h by the end and I braked early as too. Normally I manage 218 to 220 of a full speed lap.

Over all a tad dispointed the oil from the dipstick as I wanted to do more laps but it will be fixed on tuesday with the tailshaft install.

Cheers

Install was a bit of cutting here and there to get clearance but overall the mechanic said not too bad

The crank pressure issue was block crank oil filter on my catch can. I will be putting it on the dyno tommorrow arvo hopfully to test and give the tailshaft a good high speed test under full load to make sure it is all good at that connection.

The dyno run is all done. This was on the only dyno I consider as accurate and the same one I have used since day one. I managed a huge 271 rwkw. Bloody average considing I paid for a 320rwkw engine but the 50 rwkw has vanashed into thin air. All the afr, timing etc are on the money and there is simply no more in it that we can see.

Not sure what to make of all this but I shall plod along. No sure to get another cam or if that would be a waste of time also.

It just wont make power over 4800-5000rpm. On APS dyno sheet the power is near identical at the 4800-5000 range on the two dyno sheets but the APS one just keeps climbing like mad right up to 6500 where peak power should be. Todays one just flat line just like the one I did at Chevs where it did the same and flat lined abouve 4800. The chev dyno run was on the same LPG as what APS used too.

The bugger laps around at good pace so overall happy but I want my 320rwkw.

I got a run up to 250km/h today and the tailshaft did not vibrate what so ever. Smooth as silk. Happy with that.

My guess even a cam would make swa difference.

I did not write on the dyno. It was a 250 km/h run on the dyno.

After talking for a few people it seems the 8 indivual filters may not be the best layout for peak power. So I am going to go back to the dyno and try it with no filters to see if it makes a difference. I would still use the 8 filters for street use but I can easily adjust make up a filter that sits in the trays for race days. You dont need that much filtraction for the type of racing we do as there is distance between cars.

So I will see how it goes next week.

It is one sweet noise hearing 8 individuals TB with filters on them. Like having 4 sets of old school webbers. It just screams like made and a friggen sweet sound. Hard to tell of the video of course but trust me it nice and the boys at the shop like it too. As much noise from the intake as the exhaust.

Some interesting testing has been going on. I managed to get the bonnet seal and intake seal sorted and used a ORI style filter out the front. Now I can run without the filters on.
I went for a quick drive and there is a very noticable difference. It is actually considerable to be honest. Power and revs build faster and it just smashed the rev limited without me getting a chance to get the next gear with the shift light. When testing was done on the dyno there is no real any power above 4800 so just from seat of the pants it seems to run much better with the filters off and one filter out the front. After tolking to people this seems to be the go to go. I will still use the 8 indivudual filters for street use for high quality filtering.

I will get the LM2 to do some logs over the coming days as I have been told taking the filters off the engine may lean out.

Also I have the new wheels and tyres on. Just the same look M5 copies as the the circuit rims but in 19 inch and nice and wide.

Fronts 19x8.5 with +38 offset with 245 tyres (very soon I will get a semi slick 255 type road tyre (in the middle compound) for these soon so i can get to the practice circuit days/motorkhans and drift days without having to change wheels and adjusting camber etc. (drift change the backs naturally)
Backs are 19x9.5 with +36 offset and some fat 285 on there. They actually measure 300mm in real width so are dam fat tyres. Fit sweet too.

I will have a very angry 6 L coming aswell as new suspention. Should be a nice combo and guaranteed power then. I will use the same intake manifold./LPG set up and use the thingy harrop make inbetween.

At the moment I am trying to find 8 x 10 inch long chrome intake trumpets with the tappered out ends to chuck through the bonnet. I am struggling at the moment
The new bonnet is going on next Tuesday so I want to get the old bonnet modified at the same time to suit trumpets out the bonnet. Shows and display use naturally. (maybe the drags or motorkhans for some fun with filters of course)

What make are they?

The tyres are Nankang NS2. They grip like mad in a straight line and do pretty well in corners. I gave then a test yesterday and just took off with no spin at all. Even outgripped the semi slicks I had on there. As mentioned they are a great width and easy to fit with a guard roll and a mini guard pump if it have your car low as.

The wheels are called BM200 from ebay or Tempy tyres (BMW M5 copies). The offset is hard to find though in the 9.5 and 8.5 combo but if you are interested I have a link. Send a PM if so. I have the 18s on the front and 19s on the back and the 19s look huge considering it is only 1 inch difference. Really fills the guards. I will get some tyres this week for the fronts. Just have to get the right road/race type and the right price.

I have seen these on e bay before and would love some more info on how you feel they perform on the track.

My current ride is a VE Clubbie. I have an issue getting shoes big enough to fit over the calipers. I have a set of 19's that I use for track days and will eventually need to replace the rubber on them, looking for a reasonably price all round tyre.

Have you nailed down the missing kw's?

No missing kw as yet. I am trying a alternative filter arrangement. Just run one filter at the front. Still have some filter gauge supports and tidying up to do but the below is the general idea. Not pretty but will do as a trial.

The front 19s are on now and fit sweet. I have lowered it 2 inches at the front and 1.5 inch at the rear. pretty low but still ok with speed bumps and gutters proving you go in at angles. I will have the scoop going on today with a new bonnet sticker. The stance is just about spot on atm and add the scoop it should work pretty well.

Just incase there is overflow people can come over and have a chat, watch some racing videos and register for laps at hidden valley with me if they buy an apartment. Going to be a busy weekend just like last years lauch

If you ever want to hear some major induction noise under throttle come for a lap if your are in town. Sounds just awesome and real old school tripple weppers. Very very nice. Also I will connect up the water sprayers too for the windscreen. They spray out the scoop vents so I can hide them. You can see the mounts are still there. The under bonnet was sprayed and the felt removed.
I still have the standard bonnet as this was a spare

I wouldn't exactly call you a midget, so is your helmet pressed against the roof? I was considering a racing seat, but that would remove/affect the side airbags meaning there would be a fault code show on the cluster. So every time i remove the seat i would have to get it reset by holden....

Still, loving your ride. Im trying to get mine to a similar status, just takes time and patience.

All you need to do is get a resistor to put across the airbag plug, before you turn on the ignition, each time you remove the air bag equipped seat.

Cheers for all the comments. Nice to see. Time and patience is difinitially a good thing. This is a hobby and instead of banging heads playing rugby I bank my head on a roll cage instead.
Yes with the stock seat I bang my head every race or practice laps I drive around with a helmet. I just leaned to drive with my head on a slight tilt when I use the street seats. Get used it it after awhile.
The race seat is way better. I sit lower and give me more head room and makes the gear shifter near on 90 degress so you get the real racey sort of feel from the gear shift.
As per Garry above with the air bag for a permenant solution or simply pull the air bag fuse before you disconnect the airbag seat and replace it when you have the seat back in.
Race seats improve lap times by a good margain too. I have acually proven that twice now. Near on 2 seconds worth at hidden valley. Just adding that extra level of driver comfort makes a huge difference

Practice went as well as can be expected with street tyres on sunday. No idea of times etc but it was just some laps with people on board. Had fun and found the dam car wont drift or hang out easy. I did try but just would not spin the back tyres. Just pushed the front forward into bad understeer. You may see me trying a few times. Properbly the driver but for now I will blame the fat back tyres.

The car did scrape a bit too as you will hear. It is ok with me in it but put a passenger and it scrapes on the back wheel abit. Just plastic rear section so no harm
The front tyres run out of puff into the video a bit but you can see all the action as I put all 4 video in the one screen.
I put 2 angles on the second clip.
I have a couple of the HD cameras running togeather too so once I sort that with video in video there should be some good video coming

Next practice day is November 21 then I have the day with the school early december for a private hire day. I am organising a passenger day for the special kids (disable kids passenger day at Hidden Valley). Should be good and the sponsors are kicking in the track costs, ambulance etc so very nice of them.

No plans for the car short term as I am looking into the bigger items like decent race suspenion, proper engine and get a decent gearbox under there with the better ratios. All costly things and they can not be done a little at a time like I normally do.
On the other hand as a cheap way out I could just go to full slicks. Duno.

The DVR was the 4 channel DVR I use/test. The special protected bullet cameras were used so can be mounted anywhere and not worry about damage. I should have some good undercar views coming now. Before it was costing a camera a event from rocks etc. New ones no problems

Cheers mate. The cage is a bolt in bold out Bond off the shelf cage. With the harness bar and the side intrusion bars it was around $1100. It was awhile ago so prices may change a little.
It took around 6 hours of sweat to make it fit and as I run the sub frame chassie bracing I had to do a couple of minor changes to the base places. Nothing major though.
It takes about 1 hour to remove and about 1.5 to install so not bad at all once it is set up. If you get one buy the best drill bit there is as the steel is bloody hard. Even borrow a bench drill for the day. If I had that I would of cut out allot of sweat from the job.

While i am updating some new suspenion is coming Bilstein coilover set up front and rear with a bunch of custom mods for more camber and easier adjustments at the track, new front and rear big sway bars, new solid top strut mount, the Kframe and front camber VX mod done and also doing a front guard pump to get some more clearance so I can run low.
Basically getting ready to run 275 full slicks front and rear. They are big bloody tyres and I will need evey bit of room to make them fit. Should bring a fair bit of grip alone with them through.

Also I am getting some under spoiler front diffuser set up done for some better air flow.

Finailly I will get the intake trays finished so I can run one long front filter and run with the open throttles. I will also do a quick retune with that too.

Fun fun but plenty of work to do.

Pictures soon

55kg it was from memory. That was a 6 point with side intrustion and harness bars.

Should be fun getting the tyres to fit. I dont really have problems with under or oversteer at the moment but once I get different suspension and big slicks I am sure some new challenge will come about.

Out first event for next year is under lights. They are actually advertising the event too so could be a crowd and people can come to watch without cooking. I am looking forward to it as I have never raced under lights before.

Great 1/2 day doing laps at hidden valley with the special education kids from the local special school. These kids are dam hoons and just kept wanting to go faster. They liked the rev limiter allot with big thumbs up. I was limited to a certain speed so heaps of high reving going on. They loved it. Really good thing to do and the kids had huge similes and really a great thing to get involved in.
I found out why I was practicing driving with one hand (not really) as one of the kids had no head control so as I braked and took corners I held his helmet so he could see where he was going. He has no movment in his body other than face and this kid was smiling BIG time. Friggen fantastic actually. 6 kids got laps then dam car let me down.
I have no had issues for ages and today the gear stick decided to come half way out. It was still ok to drive around luckly. Them on the next outing the dash and electronics went nuts and engine went into put put mode. I was thinking something went boom.

After a little look around I found some battery acid on around the battery so checked the charging volts and no regulated volts. More the revs more volts pumping through so not real good.
I tried to diconnect the alternator to run on battery only but everything was so hot I had no chance of a roadside repair and even then it would problerbly last a lap or two.
We put the rest of the day off until early next year. Definitally do this again as it was quite an experiance.
The car is at a shop getting the repairs done tommorrow so back on the road tommorrow arvo. It was working fine at idle so I could limp it around to the local repair shop.

I have some great video to give to the parents and kids for the day out so good memorys .

Next time I organise these sorts of days I will have to have back up cars as there was still like 5 kids to go. We will get to to it but just a bit more time.

The bigger stuff will come in time. It is just a bit by bit project car and I am enjoying doing it this way. There is a flash new drag stip now so I am going to have to do something about getting this thing faster down that. Maybe a bit of NOS for drags night or something. I have two injecters per culinder now so why not chuck another on in there. Jokes too btw but never know.

I do have a general question for commodore people the engine light will not go out after the alternator died. THe alternator been replaced and there does not seem to be any problems, all charging is good, LPG all good etc. All the fault codes have been checked and cleared numberos times by the LM2 and still it comes up again. Worries me that there is something amiss

As there is no ls1 tuners up here what is the next step to find out what the issue is. Do I have to go to Holden on tech 2.

Here is the broken rip shifter but near on 5 years of hard work and smashing changes it has served well.

Hey mate,

This probably isnt relevant but i had an engine light come on after doing a bunch of work to my VX. After finding no codes and spending ages trying to work it out, it turned out to be a faulty ABS wheel sensor. I have NFI why the engine light came on instead of ABS light, but it did. (Holden had no idea either).

Perhaps try shorting out pins 5 and 12 to see if there are any ABS fault codes (Its the same system as shorting pins 5+6 to check for codes on older commodores).

As i said, its probably not it but its quick and easy to check.

Cheers

Hi Ant, I noticed you have seat covers on your GTS, were did you get them?

HSV Listy

I got hold of a scan gauge and it comes up as over voltage oil pressure switch (code P0523). So I will get it checked but due to the alternator overcharging I guess it will be stuffed. Looking at the room behind the 8TB it is going to be a PITA to get too as there is no room, LPG lines and other stuff all jamed in there. We will see anyway. Still I am a tad confused why the LM2 did not pick up a pretty standard DTC. Strange but the LM2 did reset them.

The rest of the suspension stuff should be here today and I will get the mechanic to get them changed over. I am not sure how it will sit due to the added weight of my car but it should be ok.

As for the seat covers I got them from a local sheepskin supplier NT sheepskin (that actually does a ADR approved seat airbag set). Around $450 I paid 8 years ago so not cheap. They are awesome seat covers and almost no wear even after 8 years of use.
I got the GTS badges custom made up at a local sewing shop and got them put in when they made the seat up. They were a one off set it was about $70 too. This was before the big internet shopping and you can get stuff much cheaper now.

On a side not I am liking my gearbox again for the first time in 2 plus years. Finally I can justify putting some decent oil in it so next service mainline is going in.

I got all the new suspension gear here now bar one bit for the Kframe mod but that can wait. Not a cheap exercise for those top strut mounts so just make sure that is what you are after and you need them. I belive with what I do they will be worth it. With the custom bits needed to suit the top spring seats and the mounts themselves it is near on $700 in the end plus install costs.
I am sure they will be great so once I get them on in the very new year I will let you know how they go. Same with the new suspension and springs.
The front sway bay is staying stock at the 28mm GTS one as it is just too much time to swap it verse the gains (at this stage). I will do this when I sort the engine.

I have some plans in progress for another engine and again it will be something different so things will happen over the coming 6 months. Got the plans all worked out now with costs etc. As the time gets closer I will let people know what the go is.
I should get the rest of the intake done over the chrissie holidays and get the molds finished ready for the carbon fiber treatment and fully sealed new airbox. Dam time consuming work and it would of cost a fortune if I paid someone to do this.

It is all quiet up here with track days etc as it is just wet wet wet so no point even trying to get a practice day in until late January.

The first proper meet is in March under lights so that will be cool as. New tyres and not so stinking hot so hopefully set some good times.

Will do and I will get some photos too. As yet it is a bit vague what is exactly begin done with this but it is noting too hard apparently.
My local workshop will be doing it and just following the instructions. I have to somehow get 275 tyres with -4 degrees camber up front so I need the room.
I will be doing a, at home front guard pump too just like the back. I need to get some photos of this process too. I will try and remember this time.

Luke at Whole Sale suspension can do all these Kframe and other camber type modes and can advise on the process better than me
Heasmans also I believe

From reading there is a few options. This is from others people cars but I will be getting them done. Around the $250 to $400 mark

Drilling different holes to move the lower control arms out, welding etc
Off-set lower clevis bracket struts, which space the strut inwards 19mm more than standard.

Rack ends lengthened by cutting and sleeving with Chrome moly tube TIG welded to them. Rack ends cut with a 60mm length of chrome moly tube TIG welded over them to allow 20mm additional length. More room for -camber is the result.

Sorry I missed the post. Sounds interesting as there is some real shorage of tuner visits up here. Plenty of interest but just near impossible to actually get it happening when a tuner actually shows interest in visiting.

Tiny update on the GTS. The new intake trays are pretty well done so I can run the open throttles so around the end of next week I will paint them up and test them out. Again the moulds were timecumsuming to make but a good result in the end. The radiator is lowered and tilted now to get more flow of air. It should work well and will finially allow the 8TB to run without restrictions. I will get some over the internet fine tuning done once it is set up via Oztrack
The new suspention is ready to go in to with all the custom bit here ready to go. Hopefully next week but may be the week after

I will be doing the final medical within the next couple of weeks for my race licence so hopefully I will have more luck than last year but not holding too much hope.
I will be converting the car to E85 once a tuner is available and I will have the fuel system and petrol injectors set up when ever it happens. The E85 will be for start up only. Internet tuning again but if someone visits we will see

After the medical I will make the plans where to go with the engine. Only change will be size and type of engine. Heavily worked 6L or something else if no race licence. See how things go anyway

The suspension is now all sorted. Looks the goods and gave me what I want with stacks of room for big front tyres with big -camber options.
The top strut mounts did the trick and allowed the bottom spring seat to be lifted to clear the tyre.

The ride is slightly rougher but not that much really. Darwin roads are pretty smooth. I guess to give a comparison it would be similar to the Teins on the hardest setting. The biggest difference is you feel the smaller finer bumps and the shock rebound is much faster so when you go over a small bump it seems to really push the tyres back to the deck straight away.

The top strut mounts dont change any feel driving around on the street which is simply awesome considering what i thought would happen. There is no extra harshness etc so i can not see any reason at all why they could not be used on a daily driver. Once I get to the track I think I will be able to feel the difference under stress. Also they do look the goods too I think

This photos below is with the street tyres on. These are 8.5 inch rims but if there were 8 inch it would be equivalent to +43 offset. The - camber room is based on the shock and not the spring seat windy bit so as you can see there is stacks of space. I guess around 50mm with more to come as these shocks have lower camber adjustment bolt so can push out another 15mm or so. Once I get the race wheels on with their offset of +20 I will have another 23mm more room again. All up massive amounts of room. Now I have huge options of wheels and tyres and dam fat tyres too.

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/HSVListy/100_4220.jpg

The lower spring seat clears the tyres. Looks close in the picture due to the difficult camera angle to get under there but it does clear it by around 10mm or so.

The intake trays will be changed over by end of next week and open throttles here we come with big front filters (touch up over the internet tune to go with it and some dyno time too so I will get Oztrack to sort that). The radiator is all tilted back so the air now can flow faster. New trays are being fibroglassed as we speak. Once these are done and testing sorted over the coming months I will go full carbon fiber.

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk77/HSVListy/100_4229.jpg

The car sits the same height as I used to have it before I lowered it for the car show. Perfect height for race duties allowing plenty of room for the springs to move.
As you can see I need a new bracket on the front spoiler but you get that running it low.

Do the new bilstein coil over's feel better then the tein stuff? Why did you get rid of the tein's for?

Been awhile since I have looked at this thread, some nice updates

I was totally happy with the Teins but these came up at the right price and good timing so it was time to go to some not so street friendly spring rates. Also I want the option to run wider fronts so I can put 285 or 295 wide semi slick rubber on the front. I am sorting new wheels too so eithe r9.5 or 10 inch all round.
Basically moving more race than street/race combo. Still it is my everyday car and with the Darwin roads and 900/1000lb spring rates and the solid top strub mounts the ride is still totally fine. I was expecting a heaps worse

Regarding the intake trays there was a delay on the fibro work so still waiting on them.
THe first practice day is late feb so plenty of time.

Finally the new intake trays are done bar a bit of tidy up work and and I sorted out the filter issue. I originally did not allow enough surface area for the engine to breath but now I have ample. I am way over the minimum area now (around 1200+ inches 2). The car definitively seems to drive better lower in the rev range and seems more torquey up to 4000 rpm as that is all I have been able to rev it to due to the wet roads.
I will tidy it up over the coming days and get some photos up.

I will also put it on the dyno later this weel to check out afrs etc to make sure things are still ok with the new open throttle intakes. Photos coming in the next day or so

So far the changes since last year are the higher spring rate Blistein coilovers, new stiff rear springs, whiteline rear sway bar, Wholesale suspension custom top strut mount/top spring seats and I am sorting out new wheels and tyres. I might be going up to 285 wide all round in a semi slick for the March meet but I am still sorting out brake clearances with the wheel maker.
I should be running +15 offset fronts and +25 offset rear with 18x9.5 wheels all round. I was going to go slicks but there is simply too much risk of rain as most of our race meets other than a couple in the mid year there is risk of rain.

The new season is not far away with February 20 for fun/open day.

Then on 5th March is the first round and my first night meet under lights. That should be top fun although doubt I will be going flat out under lights but it might be ok. They are doing promotion and TV adds for this so we might get some visitors.
One very good thing this year is we get to race in July for the first time ever so we might be able to race in reasonable temperatures. Normally we miss out in the middle of the year due to the V8s but the V8s are a tad earlier this year in June.

I have some very cool camera systems installed and will have plenty of video up and running. The 4 channel DVR I will have under car video, suspension video, in the intake video and more. Should be top fun.

I will do some dyno time over the coming week but the problem is the normal dyno is out of action. As for the cover further up it just get too tight. I had a good few sessions at Hidden Valley. New PB now too. Best is 1.22.12 now. In addition it is lapping in the 1.22.2-3 now when in clear laps. Pretty wrapped. The suspension seems better in the corners but not as nice under really hard braking so I might need to adjust the wing a bit. It still is fine but not as steady as the Teins
I had a leaky petrol fuel injector on the last bit of the warm down lap so that buggered me for the night race at 8.00pm. It was likely caused from the intake tray putting pressure on it but it is all sorted now and adjustments made so it wont happen again.

So all good on the race day and driving around Sunday and Monday.

Now the NOT so good news I was driving home yesterday I heard a nasty clunk clunk sound under my feet and white smoke out the back exhaust. Just started from nothing and only putting around on 1500 rpm. So I guess the engine is a gona. It still has oil pressure and all the rest. I will get it opened this week and check to see what has let go. All the oil pressure during racing and around town was spot and never dropped below 45psi so it should not be oil related. I used 10W60 as I always have.

So now to hunt down a replacement engine.

Couple of videos from the meet. This is the 4 channel DVR set in all 4 cameras in one mode. The engine intake camera did not work out too good as the tray vibrated stacks compared to what I though.

Shame I had to change gear as it would be a pretty dam tiny 0 to 100 time for a 2 tonne car.

Sorry to hear that mate, although its always a good excuse to upgrade?

A stroker bottom end might be cost effective and should net good gains. IIRC the harrop hurricane manifold was designed for a 383 stroker. Only issue is cubic capacity limit for your class, i know some racing series is limited at 6000cc. In that case a L98 is your best value for money.

Fingers crossed for you though.

After seeing and hearing Ross's new 6L on the weekend, a new L98 would do the trick.:)

That would be nice but as it is unplanned not likely

The engine was opened yesterday and it seems it may be my fault and not the engine. Something has dropped down one of the intake runners and landed on one of the drivers side pistons and buggered it. Damaged the spark plug, head, piston, all the water went though the head (hence the white smoke) and it just continued to die as it went on. I only had it running for about 10 seconds after the first initial noise

Strange that it happened as I had the individual filters on and not the intake tray. All the filters were in situ correctly and tight. Maybe something was sitting in the intake runner after I removed it fixing the leaky injector on Saturday night and just happen to rattle loose as I was driving home Monday. Maybe something was in the filter as I did not think to check if a nut or similar had fallen into one.

So the engine did not die from my abuse or run out of life which is nice to know. Shows the engine is a tough cookie.

They are pulling the engine today and assess the rest of the damage and get back to me. I will have a quick look at the rebuild costs but due to the heads and bore damage a second hand Ls1 or LS2 is most likely. Just swap over any of the good bits.
A L98 would be nice but wont fit the Harrop 8TB intake and the budget wont allow for all the changeover gear like reluctor wheel, manual TB etc etc.

Engine is out, heads and sump is off and it is official it is dead. No bits were found like nuts or washers etc and all the stuff I used was stainless steel and hardened.

A mate said it could of been the spark plug destroyed. Only one cylinder is damaged bad including the bore, piston, that spark plug, that section of the head etc. It has dropped into the sump area too so it probably has going elsewhere too.

It may not of been my fault but in reality we will never know as it may have been destroyed by the pressure.

Anyway the cost options are being worked on now. Either way not cheap and as this was not planned it will be tough to get this sorted right and for a decent budget.

If the budget stretches I will try and upgrade and see if there is a way to get some more power while I am at it.

More to come

More looking into the engine has found what looks like a mashed up screw so we have a reason. Found a couple of other issues too and it is suprising the engine was even still going to be honest. Piston and valve damage was found. I know why the power is missing now atleast and I am glad I have a way forward.

I hope to get a 6L but still working on costs and options. I will stick with the LPG and the 8TB intake. Maybe if E85 ever gets up here I may change but that is not likly.

Thanks for the kind words everyone too. More to come once some budgets and options are worked out. I hope to get it on the road in a few weeks so decisions will be made quick. Hopefully make the next meet but that may be pushing it.

Do you think that the missing power you had back in August was a result of the screw? Or a different issue all together?

bugger Tony, bad news mate, do you know how the screw got in there , is it from the intake somewhere.

Pretty sure it was a screw. All the intakes bit seem to be there. Thing is on last Saturday night the new intake trays were removed at the track to fit a o-ring on a leaky injector and I guess somehow one of the screws holding the cover on may have fallen or somthing.
Also it is possible that a screw or something may have fallen into the individual K and N filters that I put on to get me home after the injector was fixed. I never checked inside them before I fitted the 8 of them. Maybe on Monday the screw or what ever may have disloged from inside the filer and fallen in and things got messy.

That engine has had a very hard life. I did some working out and along with the 7 or so trips to alice springs (3400 km of open speed goodness return trip)dozens of sunday drives out to Fogg dam or Aladiade river and back, I would say this car has spent a good part of 15,000+km at 200km/h or more, let along 5 years of monthly circuit racing meets, drag racing, daily duties etc

I would understand totally if people say BS about the 15000km but NT people wound understand. To this day I miss them open speed runs of driving as fast as the roads can handle and that is it.

I will have a answer what way engine wise I will go in a few days.

Slowly progressing on getting another engine. Still sorting out things to make sure I dont have to do this again. Probably will be L98 based, adapter plate for the 8TB with a decent cam but still thinking about it. I will get some 1 7/8 headers too if I go this way too.
I have a run around car for now anyway so best to do this right.

While the engine is out I am getting a Whiteline 30mm adjustable front sway bar put in, getting some work done on the front splitter under tray and rear diffuser make up and fitted to help with air flow under the car. Also adding some alloy sheets under the body too. All stuff that can be removed if i ever move to a race class. I also am spending time on the intake trays to neaten them up and make the proper cover.

I guess a few weeks before much will happen or get the engine sorted.

Certainly a good start. I guess check the bushings also and maybe upgrade them if you have not. I found the Hydatrack diff not that flash with getting power down so I got a Harrop Trutrack installed. It was a world of difference and totally consistent. Also the Harrop diff cover with the brace is good to do at the same time.
I guess you have a rip shift already but if not that is the way to go. I would go the street version purely for less noise and rattles.
As for 17s there are the standard HSV and some holden 17s that fit over those brakes but 18s is easier and allows more offset choices for track use. 17s cheaper tyres though.

Also if you really want to tighten up the handling in and tighten up the chassis I found the BMR subframe chassis kit to be outstanding $ for $ improvement. A little difficult to tell on the street but once you start to push it tightens up the car so much better. Highly recommended. You need a good welder to fit the kit and a hoist.

Let us know how you go.

I have about 5 to 6 weeks until mine is on the road again. Just getting funds together for the engine and some other bits.
I put a new front sway bar in and also I am getting a front splitter installed and a custom rear diffuser. Really for killing time while it is off the road.

I looked at the LS2 first but from all the reading the L98 seemed more over all for less as the heads dont need doing and with a good cam/springs etc you can get some really good power. It will cost more initially but long term I think it is the way to go.

I have pretty well decided that a L98 with a good power circuit type cam and get the 24 tooth reluctor wheel installed will be what I get. I have to get all the change over wiring extensions and the Harrop adapter plate too to fit the 8TB intake. The manifold will sit 3cm higher with the plate so now I need another front strut brace (number 3 now) to fit that. The added room will be a good thing with the intake trays too so I will have enough room to put the trumpets I bought on now and the intake trays wont have pressure on them to squeeze in there to fit over the intakes.

All up it is will be $16k fully fitted and tuned so not cheap but it seems the best option power v money v reliability and still be within the rules if I ever cross over to improved production. It should be all good and ready for tuning by early June.

As for the engine I am in the very final stages or sorting out the final details. Slow process and it has been a pain driving around in a buz box but I want to get this right. I will have details in the next two weeks. I will post the full specs and all the rest.

One word though it will be very very angry and 6L capacity. It will be improved production legal and a daily driver, still on LPG etc.

The gear box is done with the upgrades and changed ratios.
New engine is about 8-10 weeks away if all goes wel but customs/freight etc. It is a overseas motor. Aussie dollar too good to refuse.
Basic specs are: 6L built for 8000 rpm but I will limit it to 7500. Designed to run on LPG and E85 with pretty high compression. Mast heads and lots of good gear inside both light and to suit high rpm.

Cam is in the order of 265/270 750+ lift and 108LSA. Solid cam obviously (not everones cup of tea but as people know I like to do things differently)
Clutch will stay the same.

I am in the process or arranging the fuel lines to be replaced and sorting out the tank and upgraded fuel pump. Bit of work but converting to E85 was a late desistion as we may be able to access some up here soon. I am installing some other bits under the car and some other bits. I am tiding up the intake tray too.

For street and race it will be LPG still but E85 for start up and if I ever run short of LPG at the track I can keep on it without worring about running hard with the high compression.

I will put up more details as things get closer

Well due to some delays getting the new engine I brought a second hand ls1. I changed over some bits from my old engine that were still good. It is running pretty good and I am getting a internet tune adjustment done over the next couple of days. I will get a quick dyno run later in the week just to check things at full rpm.

I have made some adjustments to the intake trays and made some covers so they dont go near the fuel rails or injectors. Better set up

I got the new gearbox in and really not overly impressed with the mal wood shifter. Quite loose and easy to miss third, going into 5th is not real good either. The rip shifter was way better but Mal wood would not warrant the $2500 spent on the gearbox with new ratios. Shane but such is life. Reverse is popping out too which is pretty poor really after a complete rebuild. Being up here there is nothing I can do about that. Really should of been checked by them.
I can live with it though.

The whitleline front sway bay is installed too. Even with the engine out the mechanic said it was a painfull job.

So I will get the dyno sheet up where it is done and dusted.

I have a race meet this sunday so it will be great to get out there again. Been a long haul.

As for the race engine when that gets sorted out I will leave it sit until take the GTS off the road and go into IP racing. One day.

The weekend went well which is a huge relief. The second hand engine made 269 rwkw so not far off my old one. Bit down but not too bad.

I managed a new PB by a decent margin and the average lap times were overall quicker too. New PB is 1.21.6
My first out lap was almost a second quicker than I have ever done so it gets off the line pretty well. Out lap from the start finish line was 1.28.5.
I have the street car lap record back again too after loosing it while the car was out of action.

The intake tray update worked well and all the issues I suffered last time were gone. Looks pretty good too. I will get a picture up soon.

The new front sway bar was tops too. Really helped with the turn in and helped balance the car well. Power out of the corners was so much better but that may have been from the different cam in the replacement engine. Highly recommended combo of sway bars. The fronts were on the softest.

The top speed down the straight was down 7km/h which was a shame as the new low ratio fifth should of lifted that. Again it would be from less power but there was gains elsewhere.

Very hard to say. The gear ratio change was only 5th and 6th and I only use 5th once down the straight. I was down by 7km/h down the straight. I would of thought I would be up speed due to the much lower ratio 5th but no go. The power was near on par with the old engine.

The handling was better. Turn in was great and I could get power down much earlier out of the corners so it is hard to say if that is sway bar or better power delivery and smoother delivery. I would say the big sway bay had some impact on the handling no question.

I do need to find some more speed down the straight as I should be well up on speed. Faster entrace onto the straight yet slower by the end. That is all power that part.

Not sure on that and I am already looking into it. Seems to update ever 2 second or so. The LM2 TP output is super quick so it must be something on the OBD2 interface.
Also the engine load does not pick up on the GTS but does on the Avalanche. I guess so much have been mucked around with the GTS it is not surprising stuff is not showing up.

I found the issue with the TP sensor. I set it up to read every 2 seconds instead of every .2 seconds. Easy fix. The temp is now sorted as that needed a adjustment on the min/max readings. New bit of kit so still ironing out the leaning process.

This is the slightly different intake tray set up. All one piece and just slides into place now and I slip the trumpets over the throttles. Much easier and better set up. The top cover is not shown. I have made up some filters for the top too to get more air in there and utilize the scoop in the bonnet.

It was round 6 at the track today and all went well. Won the day which was good.
Not as fast as last time but the tyres and some camber issues were the only reason. It was a stinker and cars were dropping out through out the day from temp issues. Just so glad the GTS is right for these temps now.
I took a bit of angle off the rear wing to pick up some straight line speed and I picked up about 5 to 6km/h atleast.

The camber the tyre bloke set was off for some reason. Not sure why he put so much on it but it looked funny when I picked up the car but through nothing of it (I think around -6 degrees drivers and the normal -4 passenger). At the end of race three the drivers front tyre had delaminated and was through to the metal on the outer edge. I swapped it for the back on and finished the day.
The understeer was really bad all day and it was pretty obvious why. I will hit the tyre bloke up tommorrow to see what went wrong and why it was not on my normal settings (killed a good tyre out if it)

Best lap for the day was a 1.22.1 which I am wrapped with considering the understeer. The extra speed down the straight would of made up a bit. The average for the day was in the low 1.22s up until the last round due to the shagged tyre but managed some low 1.24s still

I have a spare tyre for the last round in a month so it will be fine.

I will uploads some videos over the coming days.

One no good point for the day a bloke with a new evo hit the wall and plenty of damage front and rear. ( i got it on video and will post it later. The bloke said it was ok to do. )

Plans for the car will be pretty minimal this year. The usual new tyres and that is about it. I am thinking about doing some aero work on it with the front undertray, under car and rear diffuser and also start using the car for motorkhanas now as they are getting more popular up here.
If I pick up sponsorship thinks may change again but we will see.
Happy new year.

Sounds good Listy, see you out at the island next week.

Might see you down at the next motorkana if your entering?

Quiet year for me this year. Brand new job and much smaller funds from sponsorship (no$10k / year budgets now). Other than some aero bits modifications there is not much going on. I have a few smaller sponsors for this year which is good so get free tyres and basic maintenance. As yet no word when the decals will come off and change over to the new sponsors.

The new job has a work car so the GTS is all retired from street duties. At the end of this year I am reassing where things are at with the GTS, circuit racing so a change may be at hand. I officially can not get the Improved Production race licence due to medical so no actual proper bumper to bumper racing for me in the long term. I may look at going some FI on the GTS to give it that much needed power upgrade.

I will put some photos up as things go. The next race is on the 14th May so finially we are underway for the season. Late start due to a number of delays at the track

Listy, if there is a problem with selecting reverse, did you contact Mal Wood Auto about the problem???

If there is a problem with it, it will be fixed under warranty! I'll personally make sure of it! While it's there, we can change the springs in the shifter to sharpen up the side movement of the stick.

That sounds pretty piss poor from Mal Wood Listy... If I paid that much for a box to pop out of reverse and have a crappy shifter I would do it myself. He is supposed to be the expert with T56's.

Being the distance you are away from anywhere, maybe a US sourced box isn't that big a risk anyway.

If you are referring to a T56 Magnum, they won't go close to fitting in a Commodore based car.

In stock form, correct. However you can fit a XR6T rear casing (31 spline output shaft) and a few other mods and it'll fit nicely. I know first hand, ive got one in my VX. Mal wood does these conversions, prices start at around $5k.

Well ive got as far as installing it... Yet to actually start the car. Hopefully have the car up and running in a couple of weeks where ill post some feedback...

However on paper it is worth it. Primarily because the cost of building up a T56 to handle decent power is pretty close to the cost of a converted magnum. In my case i was quoted $4800 to rebuild and beef up my T56, and it was $5500 for a built up T56 magnum. But yeah, waiting to see what its like on the road...

(but point was, you can get a T56 Magnum in a VT-VE commodore).

feistl - I work for Mal Wood Auto... :)

I bascially have the same box in my VE SS-V, and it performs much better than a standard manual transmission fitted to the V8's.

Mine was a basic upgrade package, different ratios, repairs to some parts (including the reverse that would not stay in) and Mal wood shifter. Warranty is not much a option due to distance. Cost $400 to pull out, $300 freight then close to a month minium off the road, bit question if the damage was caused at the race track etc etc. Just aint worth it. Other who live in woop woop may agree

I have got used to it. Reverse you have to hold in, it crunches from first to second but if you slam it fast enough on a stock box it will do that anyway. I have got used to the Mal wood shifter over the rip shift and it is just as quick I think.

I have new tyres and new brake pads in for the 14th May so will be good to get out there again. I finished the updated intake trays so they are much neater, way larger filter area etc.

If warranty is out the window due to distance why not just put the rip shifter back on?

HSV Listy
30-04-2012, 10:30 PM
I have adjusted to the Mal wood shifter as mentioned and the rip shifter has caused issues in the past with overshifting damaging the box with 2 boxes repaired to date and broken shifter handle. Then the cost of changing it over, getting it adjusted perfectly so it wont destroy another gearbox etc etc. It may be install related.
Maybe I am too hard on it shifting I am not sure but the Mal wood one it wont overshift. Reliability is more importaint.

Had a bit of fun for sure. I have a bit of video uploading now. I will chuck it up tomorrow.
Next round is mid July so hopefully nice cool weather for the day for a bit of relief.

Bilstein coilovers with adjusters at the bottom for -camber, whole sale suspention adjustable solid top strut mounts to get the spring seat up and get the wheel under (hugely uinderrated item) and finailly running +20 offset wheels. Basically up to -6 deg neg camber if I want it. Generally I run at 3.5 to 4

I have a busy few weeks coming. Practice on the 8th July circuit racing, then the NT titles for drag racing the weekend after that then the next round of circuit racing after that.
All good. The drags are outside the ordinary for me in a competion event. I am looking at getting a drag based car soon so having some practice in a competition class at the strip for the rest of the year in the GTS (street car class so not anything special). Going to do comp meets in the standard street car class for the rest of the year. It is slow as only makes 13.7 at 107mph.

Hey Listy just a heads up mate, but that's the wrong sticker for your isolator. Plain blue is for the battery location. Blue with a red spark is for the isolator.

Cool and thanks for that. It was just a temporay thing as i had no lighting stickers. I have a set on order so will be here by the next circuit racing meeting next weekend.

Ended up winning the street class in the NT Titles DRAG racing last night (yes that is drag racing) . Bit of a suprise for sure.

The final there was 5 seconds wait until I could leave. HUGE chase down but just got there in the end with some pedeling as I felt I was going too quick.

Went circuit racing on the weekend and set a new PB of 1.20.88 which is great.

BIG downside at the end of race 3 the engine went boom in a big way. Huge amounts of white smoke.
I checked all the data from the LM2 and oil pressure, engine temp and the basic tuning all read perfectly normal so in short engine internal failure.

So it is getting the heads off (again) to see what sort of damage is involved. This time I will buy new new engine as this only lasted 6 months before boom.

I hope the heads are ok so it is just a short block one for one and away we go again.

Video of the smoke when it let go. I have another vid of inside but have not uploaded as yet.
There is water all through the oil too so block is split too I guess
Bloody annoying but it was just internal failure.

The video is cut short as the misses thought I had a huge off and the kids were hanging off her.

Sorry to hear mate. It's funny how you set your pb just prior. I'm a firm follower of the belief engines always run their best just before they let go. Be interested to see the cause when you find out.

Unlucky mate, it's funny with engines how when the numbers look good they fail. Coming into a hairpin a bit of load down changing and pop, maybe a small fracture in the block/cast deficiency finally let go who knows.

I've always raced by the four rules,
1. Race it
2. Break it
3. Fix it
4. Repeat

:D

Yes hear that.Number 6 piston was dead, broken conrod, split block etc etc. Not sure on the heads but one side would be no good atleast.
I ordered a long block ls1 today. It is a complete long block so will be all done ready to install including all the normal ls1 upgrades like cam, oil pump, springs, brand new rebuilt engine etc etc. Has 12 months warranty to go with it too which is good.

Saves changing all the gear over from the old engine as labour is the killer doing that.

The engine in the car is dead so not worth even recoving. Still plenty of stuff will be still fine and I will sell it off like last time.

I am giving the local tuner a go too as the engine builder will warranty the engine including tuning if I get the tune done at this shop. That is a good thing.

So 2 weeks to build the engine, 1 week freight and 1 week to install so if all goes to plan it will be ready for run in in one month.

Hope and see.

My other project is going well too for my sort of drag / street car for next year. Nothing serios but just something I wanted for a while. It will be blue soon but wrong badge so not not much point putting up details

Photo of the engine might pass through.

No worries.

Pretty simple plan.

It is a XE Turbo original from Ford (aftermarket option from new) Fuel injected
170 000 orig km
Perfect straight and rust free body
5 speed borg warner manual
Several upgrades already done like suspension, alarm, central locking, air shocks. Similar to the fairmont upgrades plus extras.

Mods in progress are:

Custom modified EA intake and exhaust manifold to suit turbo.

New Garret TT37R 600hp rated turbo. Pretty big but will run about 450hp at the engine. Planned output 400 to 450hp at the engine

Custom piped intercooler

High flow injectors and high flow fuel pump

High lift turbo camshaft and upgrade timing chain / dizzy arm

Extra heavy duty clutch

Aftermarket ECU to run it all. Basic though.

It should run low 12s.

Already done is the DJR grand prix kit fitted, rear disk brake upgrade, LSD and 3.07 gear ratio. New Wheels are identified and found. Not purchased or final decision yet. Should be 10 or 11 inch 295 rear and 8.5inch 245 fronts.

Next job he is to finish the intercooler plumbing, take the engine out, clean and do the cam, timing chain, rings, bearings etc. Basic rebuild.

Full respray inc engine
