Hey my mates Father is currently trying to toss up between an Audi S5 (4.2l V8, N/A, 0-100 5.4secs (auto)) and an Audi S4 (3L, supercharged, 0-100 5.3secs (auto))

So it made me wonder, which car would you choose if you were fortunate enough to make the choice, and why?

S5 - when I see it I feel the same way as when I see the Monaro. Its the super sexy cousin of the family hack with the go to match the show. The engine deserves the selfishness that comes with two doors only. I am never going to drive an S4 the way it should with my kid in the back and wife next to me. I am going to enjoy a drive in the S5 because its not the family hack.

S5 all the way - Love it! The sedan wouldn't even be an afterthought. Unless you start adding an 'R' into the prefix... :p

The S5 is a terrific car to cruise in, and I found it a bit of fun on the racetrack also as the tail slides around a bit when you want it to (have to push it do do that of course but the 60:40 R:F diff helps a bit). Sounds ace and is a sensational looking car.

The S4 on the other hand is a franetic rocket and more similar to something like a WRX Sti to drive, but with more luxury, build quality and safety bits than the Subaru/Evo type cars.

The main thing though to consider is if he is willing to chip it or not. S5 isn't necessary, the S4 on the other hand with a chip alone is now running 320kw (from 245kw) with the abt set up with 520Nm and will get from 0-100 in about 4.6 seconds: that's just a chip! That engine is undertuned to the buggery and with the AWD system you actually have the ability to use whatever you put into the engine. Might be worth thinking of if he's looking to go a little further under the bonnet.

But the S5 does look horn.

S5 sportback is coming soon also but with the 3.0 tfsi: that looks brilliant in the flesh also

The S5 without a doubt.

It is a shame that they only come in auto though.

S5 all the way....Had one as a company car and it is just awesome ! I own a Monaro and a comment from one of the previous posters is right - It is the Audi equivalent with all the bells and whistles and an engine to die for !

Have been for a drive in one with a Supercharger. Produces approx 550 BHP and a sound like no other car anywhere !

I love it......Unless you bring the R8 into the equation of course !

While the 4.2L is a great engine (in RS4 spec :P), in the S4 spec they aren't that exciting. The 3L SC engine is a gem. Has really nice and wide stretching torque and power curves. The latest S4 (with the 3L V6 SC) has been clocked in the low 13's stock!

Wow the 3lSC sounds like a fantastic engine.

I think the S5 might be winning though lol, its looks are hard to go past.

I'm with you Evil, have worked on and driven almost most of what Audi has produced over the last 10 years including the R8 and I still prefer my SS. Obviously the R8 is an exception but it is the price of a house so .... The change you get from NOT buying a burger rings campaign car will make any late model commodore better, stronger, faster than any Audi hands down and you'd still have enuff change for a 10000 inch LED LCD Plasma HD TV AND a holiday for 20, and so on and so on.

My choice, if forced would be the S5 out of those two. If the flavour has to be "german" why not push him towards an M3 ....... or a C63 :soap:

This question is really just a current version of the fairly common "which car to buy- Monaro or Commodore" question, and the answer remains the same.
If you don't need back seats and can afford the extra purchase cost, a 2 door will (almost) always be a far sexier car to own.
However, if you regularly need the practicality of a 4 door, then the answer should be obvious.

Im guessing these Audis cost more than a Twin Turbo R8 Clubbie, so I would much rather get an R8 TT and blow away these hotshots in their, what they would think, are their unassailable Euro imports.

I love Audi's and would own one if we could afford one If I had to choose between the 2 I'd go the S5.. Wasn't the S4 the car Hamster beat in a drag race in the Maloo on the last episode of season 13 of topgear.

thats the previous model rs4 youve posted a pick of. S5 looks better, write ups not that great though. S4 has had very good right ups

If he goes the s4 make sure he takes drive select and the sports differential. Sports diff has torque vectoring which with quattro basically means the power heads to whichever wheels are getting traction; means you put your foot down in nearly any conditions and it's just going to go.

The tunability of that 3.0 sc may also help it with residuals down the track as the tuning heads will start looking for second hand ones down the track. Main advantage of any of these things is the awd system; it got very good with the 60;40 split and then the torque vectoring now gives it a real sporting go but able to thump along with full grip in any situation

Audis leave me cold - just not interested at all - and I can't figure out why, whereas I always enjoy a BMW. Anyone else feel the same way?

Thing is with a lot of Audi's it's only the last generation that they've really nailed the dynamics by setting the engine back behind the front Axle, setting default the torque to the rear and some other additions they've put in the car to make them more drivable.

Taking an RS4 or and RS6 out for a drive on a road very hard and get used to the level of Grip they have and then it will start to make sense... The AWD models are a lot of fun once you get your head around them.

Yeah I forgot to mention that as well PAV as they do have an awesome exhaust note especially an RS4 which is just as well as the flybywire throttle response resembles that of a 3 toed sloth on morphine ! Don't even get me started on audi drivers :flamin:

I'd go for the S5.
It may be 'slower', but for me its the better car.

The S5 will soon have the same engine as the S4 anyway.

S5 all the way! One of the most beautiful cars on the road. There's a black one that screams down our quiet street every afternoon, the sound is just incredible!
