so i have a vy ss which has 2 noises, 1st a rattling noise that is noticeable when going over rough roads

so i figgure it may be related to the worn strut top bushes. had them replaced 2 weeks ago along with new bearings. also got the car lowered at the same time.

now this noise seems to be worse then ever!! my next guess would be the link pins but after that im stumped to what it could be.

2nd noise is sort of a squealing sound which can only be heard with windows down and no music or a/c on but is easy to hear when driving up near fences or buildings. i first thought it was something to do with the brakes because it would go away when the brakes are applied or turning left. so new rotors and pads fitted (upgraded of course) and noise still there.

next thought it might be the wheel bearing then. took to holden for service and made the mechanic come for a drive and he heard it aswell and said sounds like bearings. checked them and they were fine, nothing wrong with them. noise still there.

so now i have 2 annoying noises that are starting to get on my nerve and makes the car look like a beater cause of the sounds its making.

any ideas on what i should do??

Wow Toey, come to my workshop if you're keen to throw money at undiagnosed issues the way you have ! It sounds like those mods were due so I understand to a degree.

The rattle could be a number of things but if it is definately coming from the front end you really need to check each component. Is it a dull knock or a typical metallic rattle ?

The second noise could be one of the backing plates touching the disc ( I hope it's not since someone has just had their head down there and should have seen it....) Is it relative to road speed ?

the squeal will surely be wheel bearing i had thesame issue....bearing seemed to be fine no freeplay or excess movement but i took the punt and i was right.......i assume the holden mechanic was competent???

For the second noise have a look at this thread..
http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=89804

There's a kit you can get for it,but I just yank on the handbrake every now and then and it goes away.

The rattle (if it like coins in your wallet type rattle) are 2 washers that sit one above and one below a rubber bush just behind your strut at about the same height as to top of your brake disc, just a little higher from memory (sorry, no mechanical description I just know they're there cos same thing on my brothers car). Annoyed us for awhile cos when you put the car up on jacks the top washer is loose, when the cars on the ground the bottom washer is loose.

[edit] I think its the same as this. http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/vr-vs-holden-commodore-1993-1997/34225-whiteline-link-pin-kit.html

hey dude havnt thrown money at car like you think, strut tops were shagged and failed while out of town so needed to get fixed to get home (was going to replace 2 weeks later anyway). the brakes i picked up brand new dba 5000 rotors for $100 off a mate, too good to pass up. holden didnt charge to check wheel bearings while in for service as its still under warranty and thats the only reason they change my oil.

so tomorrow ill check the rear brake pads and park brake to see if that is making the squealing noise. if its not either of them it would pretty much leave only the wheel bearings which has been said they may seem good but are actually stuffed.
also will check link pins, struts and all other front end bushes.

thanks for the advice guys, will keep you posted of outcomes

Don't know about the squealing noise, doubt it would be the wheel bearings.
With the rattle if your sorted the towers, the other place to look on the VY is the aircon suction pipe it runs from the front NS chassis rail up under coolant bottle & PCM. Theres little or no fixings holding it in place & they can rattle like a bastard & not insulated either. I sorted mine by wrapping it with armaflex & it don't rattle anymore.

Hope ya sort it.

Cheers

well i have been pretty slack of late but i have just finished fitting some new link pins i got from wholesale suspension and the rattle is now gone.

also the squeel is definetly coming from the front brakes but its not too bad now so ill just get over that
