This maybe a stupid question but does oil have a shelf life?

Would it be ok to buy oil now and use it in a year or two?

I don't see why not as it'd be worth grabbing a few and saving a some bucks!

Just give the bottle a bloody good shake before pouring it in if that's indeed what you have in mind :)

Why don't they ever have 10W60 at a good price? The most you ever seem to save is $5, and I still can't comprehend why its double the price of 5W30 or all the other oils from the Edge range.

Because its the good shit that everyone buys.

So how does 5-30 go in an LS1 (consider also LS1's are at least 4 -10 years old now) - the place where I get Clubby serviced don't like the 30 grade stuff, as they say oil usage is pretty bad. They lean towards a 10-40. Holden/ HSV originally spec 10-30 for LS1, but 10-30 doesn't seem to be available now. So is 5 -30 too light? As with all the other oil threads there will no doubt be a lot of opinions on this, and it probably comes down to different engines not all being the same.

Youll be fine keeping it for years in its original uopened container out of the sun. I use it in my VE SS, think it even says on the oil cap to use 5-w30 engine idles so close to silent its not funny, no oil burnig or woes sometimes assoiated with thin oil.

Doesn't the 10w60 oil last about twice as long before service intervals because I know I saw a 10w60 oil and it was green oil

What oil was that exactly?

I use the Mainlube product but I still change my oil every 6 months or 5000kms regardless!

i think 5w30 isnt really suitable for LS engines . Too thin , good price though if you have a small tight tolerance engine like a Honda for example .

I agree in my old VY SS it used to give terrible lifter noise with Castrol 5- 30 but was fine with 10 - 40w. I think it's to thin.

What do the numbers mean exactly?

I presume the first number (5/10etc) refers to the viscosity of the oil?

I actually have been using 10w 60 edge.... so no good price for me:bawl:

The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, while the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperature

I have been using Magnatec 10w-40 as I reckon the 5w-30 is too thin. It is like water. Just my opinion

Might have to get some of these myself.

Glad I saw this on here - I don't get supercheap catalogues here - it's "rural" even though I have 2 stores within 5 minutes of here.

Nulon 10w-40 is also pretty good. Picked it up for $63 for 6 litres, plus its full synthetic.

Same problem here, major noise, but ran really smoothly.

Just wish the had the 10-60 on special, oh well will have to wait for a 20% off day and buy half the shop.

I run 5w30 as thats whats on the oil cap, i tried the 10w but found it made the car a little sluggish, after changing back to the 5w it chirps second again.
Oil shouldn't make that much differance should it? It's a MY09 SSV.

Hi guys,
Went to buy this oil myself today but i noticed that on the back where they list the specs of the oil it mentions not to be used in a petrol engine?
I therefore left it and didn't buy it.
Does anyone know what that is all about??????
