View Full Version : Post count of 20

TWIMC (I'm guessing Sidewindr?)
This is regarding the new restrictions that have been put in place.
For those who don't know, members who have a post count of under 20 can no longer view any pictures or icons. Nor can they follow ANY link posted by another member, regardless of either it's relevance or it's location (ie whether the link leads back to another thread within the LS1 forums or to an external website).
My understanding is that the 2 primary functions of a forum is to be able to share experience with other members and to be able to learn from other members experiences. By removing the ability to see pictures and follow links of what other members are talking about you have basically all but stripped the ability to learn from this site.
I'm currently at 17 (i think) posts so this will not be affecting me for too much longer (depending on how this is received, i guess :eyes:) but if i was a new newbie (say less than 10 posts) i couldn't see myself wanting to stick around. Either that or i'd just go and make pointless crap posts until i got to 20, and was able to see what people are talking about.
There are a lot of pretty smart cookies on this site, with some great idea's and even better cars! Alot of the technical questions that are asked, i can't answer for lack of technical knowledge. Hence I don't post much but i still visit this site most days to see what people are up too with their rides, read some interesting threads, and occasionally join the fun with cruises and such.
I'd only be guessing for the reaons why the restrictions were put up in the first place but the result is basically saying if you have a post count of under 20 - piss off, we don't want you!
I'm pretty sure that wasn't your intention, and IMHO you need to find another way to acheive what you set out to do.
My 2C.

hi guys
i'm a newbie and i would have to agree with the raptor308... dont mean any disrespect but i want to be able to learn and to view pics and posts in order to further my undertanding.. and i also do not have alot of technical information to share but i do not wish to post pointless comments just to reach the 20 mark and possibly get suspended in doing so.

i agree with all this. i know i have got above 100 posts now, but i can see what they are saying, and i dont think they should just post crap just to get their ost count up. maybe the mods can change this post count rules.
i however do like the validated and non-validated rules on here, maybe just keep with that rather then the post count rules. just my thoughts

Mate like it or not it will happen, have a close look at the pages now and it is already happening
How do newbies get involved in posts now that contain links and pics of members rides and new products? Starting new pointless posts asking the same boring questions will begin.
The typical "Use the search button" smiley as an answer to our posts will be much better for us non contributors because we cant even see the smiley!!

I've been a member here for 4 years and I visit the site just about on a daily basis. I like to keep up with the latest news and check out what people are doing to their cars.
With 2 posts in 4 years you can clearly see that I am mainly an observer more than a participant. I won't been trying to get to the 20 posts. I dont feel the need to contibute to threads to get enjoyment or information from this forum.
So since you feel the need to restrict my access to information by placing limitations on what I can see and do on this forum, I wont be visiting any more. So long......

I have to agree with this new rule not being quite thought out, all it is going to do is just increase spam and useless posts on the forum. I've been a member of this forum for a while now and always just trolled and read threads trying to learn more, now its pointless because i cant follow links or view pictures (do you know how pointless the diy section is without pictures)

As you can see I am another that has been a member on here for a while, but with very few posts. This is a pointless rule that I (hopefully) can't see lasting much longer.

i agree as well,i sent a pm to the mods ,whats the point of it ,and they dont keep accurate count either i was on 9 for ages ,iv posted well over 20 ,it never worried me until now.
i feel it will also hurt the sponsors,i might be a newbie but ive spent nearly a 1000 dollars with car care products ,and 1675 with oz track, about to spend 4000 with kpm, would be a bit hard to sell your products to people who carnt see them .:bawl:

As has already been stated numerous times on the forums - ANYONE FOUND MAKING POINTLESS POSTS PURELY TO INCREASE THEIR POST COUNT WILL HAVE THEIR ACCOUNT SUSPENDED AND THEIR POST COUNT RESET TO ZERO.
If you have issues with this latest restriction put in place by the forum owner, make a sensible post stating your case and leave it up to the decision makers to review it.
Congrats to all those in this thread who have had their counts reset to ZERO for their silly actions here - further pointless posts will have you on the sidelines for a week

I have to agree with most of the people that are posting on this thread.
I've been on the site for about 6 months, never posted to any of the forums that count because I don't have any useful input and I'm not going to post crap when there are plenty of people that can give useful advice.
I really hope I don't get suspended for this, I enjoy coming on here and reading about people's cars and seeing the awesome pics.

So why exactly did the mod's bring ths rule in? Surely there is a better reason than merely wanting everyone here to actively contribute
ol_mate
07-11-2009, 01:34 PM
I think its a real shame, hopefully the moderators will give a reason for this decision. I cant really see how this restriction could benefit the forum in any way.
I visit this site most days to see what people are up to and will only post when I have something worthwhile to contribute rather that mindlessly posting just so i can see some pictures and links. The forum sponsors would be suffering as well, for example, Marrano's have an excellent collection of threads detailing the work they have been undertaking on customer vehicles. Unfortunately, those with less than 20 posts will now be forced to fatten up their post count in order to see the pictures in these threads.
Hopefully this decision will be changed in the near future to allow new users to participate fully in the forum.

We do not make the rules or changes on this forum - it has now been bought to the attention of Sidey and hopefully something will change as I personally do not agree with the new rule either!
But whatever you do do not go around making pointless posts as XLR8 V8 said above.

Watch out planetdavo!!
Just as a tip, with regard to the whole "you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar".
I was a member of a forum where you needed to have a post count of 50 to gain access to certain member areas and functionality.
There was no way I could make 50 posts in this highly technical forum.
So I politely asked a mod if I could be exempted, and I was instantly granted full membership status.
Sweet!!
Don't know how it would go here, but I'd try emailing kris@ls1.com.au and asking :eyes:

yes i agree rules are rules but what about someone in my shoes that really likes cars and wants to learn more and more.. but i cant see pics so when someone is explaining something i cannot see what they are referring to in a picture so i am left guessing or now will be asking questions of what the picture is because i cannot see it and filling up the tread with pointless questions which would be answered if i saw the pic in the first place..

:lmao: Nice as usual Seedy! I have the strange sudden urge to check if we can put -999 as someone's post count  :P
To all, as Kel has mentioned, we have expressed our thoughts on this latest change to the forum owner and he should be on later to respond.
Be patient as some of the latest changes are just default settings of some VBulletin addins that have been applied with the forum upgrades, and those settings could still change to be a lot more user friendly.
FYI Some of the hacks we had on the old version don't work on the new one so alternatives had to be found, some of which don't work as well as the old ones, some that are much better. Lots of tweaking is still being done by Sidey.
P.S. Those that have posted sensibly on this topic should be past the 20 post limit shortly :xmas:

Why not add something useful in the tech section that actually helps someone out?
Instead of this bullshit that makes you look like a dickhead.

This must be the Gen Z thread ... bitch and moan about "I deserve / I'm entitled / it's my right" instead of getting of your arse and fixing the issue.
:goodjob:
I had less than 20 posts once ... can't say I have ever made an effort to lift the count, contribute in a useful fashion and 20 will be gone before you know it.

It never ceases to amaze me the way some people react to things no matter how small, it must be some compensation issue for those individuals with a very small appendage. As Sonny said, you catch more flies with honey and if users would only be polite and reasonable in their requests they may not meet with such enforcement or responses. We have always had a very strict enforcement policy and that is one of the reasons we have been able to keep the idiot population so low unlike many other forums.
As for the post count issue, this is usually the only means available to limit newbies and spammers from cluttering up the forums. I am presently working on implementing a new system that uses a number of factors like posts and time since joining etc. to create a points system that then is used to grant such privileges.
These things take time. As for the viewing etc. this is now corrected, you still need 20+ posts to post images and inks etc. however.
The post count restrictions etc. do not apply to Validated or Sponsor Users... :)
This is all done to encourage participation in the forums because without active user participation (useful participation as well, not pointless spam etc.) this forum would not be what it is today and would not continue to grow and serve the community with such a valuable and FREE resource.
