View Full Version : Advice on stroking an LS3

Per another thread, I recently had a oil pump failed which caused my cam to sieze and ultimately do damage to my pistons and valves.

Now looking for some advice on where to go from here, with the idea that whilst the engine is out and in a million pieces, it might be a cost effective time to upgrade to forged pistons and better conrods, as well as consider a crank replacement to stroke the engine from its stock 383ci to 427ci.

The engine already has a 232/236 @112 .600 cam in it, harrop supercharger, CNC'd heads, headers, 3" quad, etc etc.

I'm looking at Mahle forged pistons and Manley conrods and if I look at the crank swap, looking at a Manley crank and from I can tell and from what I've read, these are good solid cranks.

Having never gone down a internals swap out (other than a cam), before I start betting my money on what I've read and what I research - any advice much appreciate.

Any recomendations on gotcha's to consider (obviously, I'm replacing the oil pump to a SLP hi flow one, engine will be completely stripped and rebuilt, tuned, dynoed, new performance bearings installed, etc) and thoughts on what this should cost? I'm getting quotes around the 9500 mark for forged pistons, new rods, new crank, all fitted, etc.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Damn, oil pumps.. Glad i have a high flow one now. Sounds like a good price... I had to buy my LS3 block though so it was a little more expensive. I went 416ci just that i didnt want to push it. Get all good products as in the end it is worth it..
I'm about to throw a 247-255 in it with new LSXr manifold. N/A though. Thinkin about fuel pump now... just have to wait and see how it goes..

DAVESS-V, do you know what brands you used for rods, pistons and crank?

247/255 would be a lumpy as thing to drive with - is this a daily driver?

Ouch!! :bawl: Had it been working hard before it failed? For one LS3 stroker buildup with all the good gear see http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=123937

Wonky thanks - yer it had been working fine. Pulled 442rwkw on a dyno so was quite happy with it. But I figure whilst I've got the thing in pieces, worth looking at options like this.

Yep, certainly makes sense to look at your options! So, sounds like the oil pump failure was just one of those unfortunate random occurrences?

for a start mate a ls3 is 376 cubes,

maybe look at buying a come racing already built 408 and you can pick any camshaft you want,

does your 9900 odd trhat you where quoted include machining ?

I have an LS3 done by Russo, made 364rwkw through a stalled VE A6. Mine should eventually run a high 10 as a full weight daily driven car. Still got to add on the fast manifold and Nick Williams throttle body.

Has the following N/A 427 CI LS3 using an4.1 Eagle forged crank, Scat H beam rods, Aries Custom forged pistons, L98 heads CNC ported by Nathan Higgins, patriot springs, Custom hyd roller cam, ARP bolts etc.

This is the thread for build.

I sent my car from Brisbane to them and will use them in the future.

Thought it timely for an update here.

Have signed up for a stroker upgrade (to 427ci) and a cam upgrade, given the last one was looking shabby after it siezed and took out a few bearings, etc (not to mention bent pushrods and valves).

The block is currently at 440rwkw with head work, previously a 232/236 cam, htv2300 blower and some other bits and pieces. Hoping for a nice torque increase with the stroker from 6.2 to 7.0 and a slightly lumpier comp cam (upping to a cam in the 24x range).

Replacing the existing conrods with Manleys, new forged manley pistons and the crank will be a manley crank also. Valve set will be upgraded, as well as the fuel pump (to a dual 500hp bosch pumps), and an upgrade to the htv2300 to support the extra load and support 15psi.

Given my nervousness after the stuff up last time all due to a faulty oil pump, that will be upgraded and replacing all the head and main studs with ARPs.

Fingers crossed for a smooth rebuild!!!

Will update again with dyno figures and results once its all finished in about 2-3 weeks time.

Sounds like it's going to be one wild engine :goodjob: who's doing the work?
