View Full Version : Aeroforce gauges
LS1-5.7

Well guys & girls they have arrived ! My aeroforce gauges that is :) For those that have them, I can see what all the rave is about as they truly are an awesome bit of gear. The aeroforce guys in the states are first rate and really look after you. For those of you interested I've got pics of the pod I made to house them which in my opinion (and everyone that has seen it) looks better and is a better design than the ones ready to buy for anywhere from $70 to $300. Total cost of this one $25 but a fairly high labour intensive time over a 1 week period. Total cost under $500 and 100 times better than hsv or other single function gauges !

Expecting my gauges to come in tomorrow for my VYII SS auto. Can't wait to put them in.
Was it easy to run the cables from the dash top to the OBDII port under the dash without removing any dash panels?

VX_INT, how did you run the cable from the gauges to the OBDII connector under the dash? Did you have to remove any part of the dashboard to do this?
VX_INT
12-11-2009, 12:05 PM
Na didnt have to remove nothing. I run it down the left side then around the back to the OBD2. I used a length of wire taped to the end of the cable, made it easier to feed it down.
it would be nice to be able to put these somewhere on the VX...
I might have to put them on the bonnet

I ran mine down the front right of the centre consol. You can run a coat hanger down some gaps and it pokes out down the bottom (almost a straight line). Tape the gauge ends to the wire then pull back up :) Less than 5 mins ;)

Pics of the pod will be coming very soon. The easiest way to run the cable is to remove the instrument cluster surround (2 screws) and then you'll see a nice sized hole looking from the drivers seat to where the top dash plate sits. Make sure you pull the fuse box panel under the steering column down and move the steering column to the lowest position. All up takes about 30 mins including tidying up the cable behind the dash :) I would suggest to all who have/are getting these gauges to buy a sun shade screen for the windscreen as the direct sun will not be too kind on the gauges especially in 40 degree heat !
Adam, they will display everything your ECU gets including oil pressure without any additional senders. I've got mine set for oil pressure, coolant temp, battery voltage and air intake temp. The combinations and different options are endless.

Just finished installing the gauges in my car. Here's a few pics that might help others when installing theirs (excuse the crappy mobile phone pics):
After you have popped the dash top cover off, poke a cable down the right side until it comes out the bottom. I removed the plastic trim piece on the side of the centre console to make it easier.

Tape the ends of the OBDII cable to the cable you you have just poked through your dash and pull the whole thing up out of the top of the dash.

The OBDII connector is under the fuse panel under the steering wheel.

I have a set of these at home and have been trying for months to get them to fit into my VZ SS. The VZ gauge pods are too small to fit these size gauges, but the VY pod is the wrong shape for the space given on models with climate control.. I have tried to tweak the VZ pod, but I can't forsee being able to make the holes big enough without ruining how it would look..
Has anyone else had the same issue?

Check this thread as it has been done in a VZ as you can see from the pic below: http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=968349&postcount=68

One thing i've noticed with these gauges is that their display gets affected with extreme sun light/heat. Today was a very hot and clear day in Melb and the car was parked outside in the sun for a few hours. When i turned the car on the the display was a bit lighter (greyer) than usual. As it cooled down the display went back to the normal black. So if you're parking in the sun make sure you're carrying a windscreen sun shade in the car!

i hate pillar pods.... given the fact i own a plastic welding and repair company i might just make myself something that hopefully looks factory once i work out which way i want to go... this thread has given me a few pointers
They look pretty good.. Earlier models like VT-VX don't have the space for the dash mounts.. Can you run a single gauge instead of double? Can you get all the same features as a scroll through function? What beenefits would this have say over a scangauge besides the aesthetics?

Yes you can run just the one gauge. There are single and double A-pillar gauge mounts available for Commodores. All features will be the same as when you run 2 gauges you are running 2 separate gauges.

Nidz -
Certainly can run a single gauge mate. The only benefit of having the dual gauge setup is that you can monitor 4 parameters at once. The scroll through feature will still operate. From memory (rough memory at that) you can pre-program 8 parameters for this. I'd say aesthetics are the main advantage over the scangauge. I'm very glad I got my gauges. If nothing else it gives you a better idea about what's going on with your car during your drive cycle :)

Guys,
Here is my install into a VT-VX Console. This was done by myself and best mate over a weekend. Other forum members (Beno and JBondSS) helping out (chief technical advisors) as usually.
Went a bit further than just the scan gauges tho.
Let me know what ya think...
Ignore the tape of the far right gauge. I have the bezels on them now.
Ended up repainted the silver bezels to be black to match the AFR gauge and contrast against the "spray pack" silver finish.

8throttlebodies, noticed you also have an air fuel guage and wondering how you went about wiring up. Did you wire to 1 of the oxygen sensors and did you need to change to wide band sensor or does it work fine on a standard sensor. Mine have been replaced however I'm sure they aren't wide band.
I'm thinking about a air fuel guage....

Its the PLX SM-AFR - Widband O2 senor and Gauge.
I welded a new bung in the exhaust, and fitted a WB02 permanently to the car.
Pretty easy install, my brother did all the wiring and did a top job of hiding it under the centre console. Also installed my MVPI Pro box for HPT as well, which the WB plugs into.

go on:)........
Allow me to elaborate...
Wideband kit (http://www.aeroforcetech.com/products_sensors_wideband.html)
Fuel and oil pressure kits (http://www.aeroforcetech.com/products_sensors_oil.html) (oil pressure is already read by OBDII, so only fuel pressure is the applicable one... for most of us anyway...)
Boost/vacuum sensor kit (http://www.aeroforcetech.com/products_sensors_boost.html)
Temp sensor kits (http://www.aeroforcetech.com/products_sensors_temp.html) (air and fluid)
The two analog inputs can be configured through menu choices. A linear conversion can be entered so that an analog signal connected to the gauge can be read in appropriate units. These inputs are handy for pressure signals such as those from MAP and oil pressure sensors, analog outputs from Air/Fuel ratio kits, etc. These signal can then be read and recorded along side the other parameters obtained on the vehicle's bus.

Has anyone fitted these gauges to an LS3 based setup? The local distributors all suggest on their web site that LS1 and LS2's are supported but no mention of LS3. However, LS3 is vaguely mentioned on some US based forums.
Anyone here mated a LS3 to an aeroforce gauge?

Ok, so it's been a while now and time for an update. I have noticed a few niggly problems and am wondering if I am alone with this "aeroforce" experience.
Firstly, the gauge display washes out fairly quickly with any sort of heat although it has been admitted that they will by aeroforce themselves.
Secondly, I've noticed that sometimes the gauges take a fair while to boot up, eg 1,2,5 minutes or longer. I think it has something to do with how long after the ignition is turned on you crank the engine.
And last but not least, one of the displays lost the lower left quadrant of illumination on the screen, although a superfast response via email from Todd in the states and 5 minutes with a soldering iron fixed it.
Apart from the above, still very happy with the package and the gauges make you very aware of what is happening inside the engine and give you the best early warnings available.
Anyone having/had these issues ?

yeah mine dull out in the heat of the day but have always come back good. thats the only issue i have with them.
and for the oil pressure the scan gauges plug straight into the OBD II plug so it sends out what the computer is telling it.

mate if you can can you elaborate on the fading display/not heat related.
ofthe last few weeks I have noticed that my left guage(secondary guage) is alot lighter then the right one(as if it was heat related) if you can give me an idea as to the fix before I email Todd that would be great
Mohit
14-01-2010, 07:15 AM
I've found the gauge display will wash out a bit when exposed to heat (eg. parked outside on a hot day). A windscreen sun shade should help reduce or eliminate this problem.
Also you don't need another sensor/sender for oil pressure. The oil pressure is displayed as one of the parameters.
LS1-5.7
14-01-2010, 07:25 PM
Toddler, the display issue on one of the gauges was due to a dry joint at one of the contacts for the display. Had to pull the gauge apart and resolder but it's easier than resending to the states. If you have one that's lighter than the other and the illumimation setting is the same on both gauges eg: 1,2 or 3 then maybe you have a pair of mismatched gauges. Aeroforce do try to ship twin gauges that are similar in display colours but have led me to believe there is some variance across the range.
I have to admit mine are not 100% identical either but very close and not enough to warrant sending back for the same result.
Mohit, I use a sunshade every day regardless of the outside heat but I've noticed they will wash out a little even when they've been on for over an hour or so in 25 degree heat. The direct sunlight while driving seems to hit them the hardest but they've never been illegible. All in all a livable problem considering.

Yeah, pretty much. I would compare their usefulness to the EFI live scan tool, just a more easy to view while driving and alot less useful for data logging.
They are a handy bit of gear but are guarenteed to distract you while driving for ages after you get them. I'm still trying to figure out a way of fitting mine into my dash, as the VZ (with climate) console lid is a different shape to VY and VZ without climate meaning that I can't use a standard pod to mount them..

Is that all you have to do?? No power wires? no grounds??
Just finished installing the gauges in my car. Here's a few pics that might help others when installing theirs (excuse the crappy mobile phone pics):
After you have popped the dash top cover off, poke a cable down the right side until it comes out the bottom. I removed the plastic trim piece on the side of the centre console to make it easier.

Tape the ends of the OBDII cable to the cable you you have just poked through your dash and pull the whole thing up out of the top of the dash.

The OBDII connector is under the fuse panel under the steering wheel.

Here's the end result. Will take some better pics on the weekend.

It's all powered off the OBDII port and as a result turns on when you turn the car on, and off when you turn the car off :)

Hey guys, could someone do me a favour and show me a photo of what the current gear display looks like with an auto?
I have got a ls1 and 4L60E in my GU Patrol ute, but I cant get the surround to show the gear selection. Hoping these should do the trick.
Also can you get them to show up when you have a fault? Same as the engine check light would?
Cheers,
Trent

I ordered mine took over a month to arrive, but well worth the wait! I initially had them in a SS inductions Binnacle, but was terrible, so bought a genuine HSV one instead.

Just order them, they go by what country your order was placed in as to whether imperial or metric is sent out.

Jet, I'm not sure thats entirely true. I'm sure we had to ask for metric when we did our group buy. If you order, it can't hurt to send an email quoting your order number to verify it is metric you want

Correct. Send the dealer an email to confirm what you want.
