If doing it in the car and the gearbox is on the best bet is lift the engine up with a crane and remove the drivers engine mount-

If its a VT with a 6L with the ls1 knock senors on the side of the block the starter can't get past it. I made this mistake when i pulled my auto out. Starter motor would move back far enough so i forced it and broke the sensor.

I managed to get mine through by unbolting the extractors on the driver side and unbolting the air conditioner. Even then it was a pain in the ass job...

ok guys got it out,
drop power steering rack and pop it out through the front,
note : i dont have pussy ass air cond
