I'm soon going to be re-spraying my VZ Clubsport, and i have been toying with the idea of installing a reverse sensor system prior to it so that the sensors could get sprayed the same colour as the body of the car.
I have an after market Kenwood head unit installed that i know could support a reverse camera, but i am not interested in a camera. I tried finding a system where i could get an animated picture like the VE series cars have (lighting up the bars telling you which sensor is closer etc) but have had no luck in doing so. The only ones that i have seemed to have found are the beeping only systems.
Does anybody know of any other type of sysyem that i'm after that i might not have come across yet?

Thanks in advance.

surprising the VZ R8 doesn't have one already - VY series 1 Calais had them standard (beeper type). I guess the difference is the Clubby R8 is a Berlina based car.

Some reverse cameras come with markers as part of them. May be useful to you. You could get one camera front and another rear and get a screen splitter so you can see both cameras at once on your existing screen when you are in reverse. Audi use a similar system. All simple aftermarket stuff

This is just a demo of one I bought and the view is 150 degrees. You set them up so that the 4m mark is actually 4 meters behind you. The vid is just with me holding the camera taking a walk to see how it works. The quality is much better than on the recording.

Well i found i can get an aftermarket beep only package for about $300 installed from a private auto-electrician. I also did a bit of research online via google and i've seen others getting genuine Holden ones for over $600 and aftermarket from Holden for about $450. Don't quote me on the HSV prices... I might give them a call tomorrow to double check this.

That's about the going rate. I had a set installed (inc colour coding) for about $240 in Melbourne. The guy took about 30 minutes to install. They worked a treat.

Urko, there was a thread on here in which someone bought a Holden camera and was going to report back on whether it cut out at 3kmh as aftermarket ones do, but despite me resurrecting the thread at least once he never did. :bawl: I suspect that means it didn't, and my contacts within Holden parts say no also.

To answer your PM to me see http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=119236 - I love it except as with any SSV, the front screen display cuts out at only 3kmh to prevent people trying to watch videos on the front screen while driving (VIM or Vehicle In Motion). There is a solution but it costs around $300, which I can't justify for occasional use, so have to go slow if I want to use the camera.

Senator Mike's R8 Tourer came with standard reverse camera which he says works at any speed.

Can backup re: the Tourer, mine doesn't seem to have a cutout speed.

Just looked on Supercheap autos catalogue online, they have a range of sensors from about $79.00 for a DIY kit and cameras as well!
I reckon I have seen them in store before for a fair bit less though.
Christmas catalogue will be out soon! :)

Are any of the aftermarket systems non invasive? No need to hole the bumper bar....

Received a couple of PMs about the camera so will post the info here. Was gonna go for a CMOS camera but the installer Adrian (vxclubby85) talked me into a CCD camera for its better quality picture and night time performance even without the need for extra infra red lights. I'm glad he did coz the camera has been great. Camera was $170 which i got from Adrian who got it from No Limit Electronics where he used to work. Hope this info is helpful to others.

Please explain?

I think UTESRULE possibly means if the sensors stop beeping if you're doing 3 or more k's in reverse, as some models have that as a cut off speed and stop functioning.

the 3km/h cutoff is only on the VE's with factory screen.

In Mohits case he has a VY with aftermarket Kenwood unit. So will work at any speed.

Cheers,
Adrian

Do you mean your own tow bar or another car's tow bar?

I guess both now that I think of it. I don't want to back into a tow bar and also I don't want to put my tow bar through someone elses pride and joy.

If you position the camera the same was as it's positioned on my car you won;t be able to see your own tow bar.

If you're backing up to another car then yes you can see that car's tow bar but it depends on how close you get to the other car and the way that tow bar is positioned.

As Adrian said, the 3 kmh cut out only applies to visual systems (cameras) installed to display on factory fitted dashboard screens, the reason being so that the front screen can't be used to play DVDs and distract the driver while driving. Audio only sensors i.e. beeps have no such constraints. There are ways and means to circumvent it.

Senator Mike's R8 Tourer came with standard reverse camera which he says works at any speed.

Have found that apparently HSV paid for and arranged to have circuitry added to enable that, thus the reason for that.

No Limit Electronics can do the VIM mod to circumvent the 3kmh cutout but last I heard it was about $300. Too much for me to justify when all I have to do to keep the camera working is go slowly, which at times is a pain. Maybe others can do it cheaper???
