Recently my car has begun making a whining noise that (to the best of my knowledge) is coming from under the hood. You can barely hear it when the car is idling, however when you turn the wheel (even when stationary), it makes a a loud whiny sound. It isn't loud enough to hear when you're driving over 50 and it doesn't make the noise when i'm not accelerating, however you can hear it when i accelerate and especially when i turn...

I've got her booked in for a service at Holden next Friday, but am wondering if anyone has a rough idea of what the problem could be? Although I'm sure there are plenty of possibilities.

Cheers for any help :goodjob:

The noise getting louder when you turn the wheel suggests power steering pump.

Just realised this is the wrong forum for this. Sorry guys.

Thanks for the help though. Does a power steering pump cost much to replace/fix? Any chance of Holden throwing it in with a boots and all service? (Optimistic).

it may be as simple as topping up the fluid
but yes the noise comes from the power steering pump
there may be a leak or the pump maybe stuffed or it hasn't checked in a long time but a simple fix realy

If you get it done at Holden I think they will put in a new pump, if you go elsewhere you will should be able to get a reconditioned pump (half the cost?). Say $700 new, half that reconditioned. Guessing on those prices, but might give you some idea.

Hey mate,

If it is your pump they are available from holmart.

Recond Pump Link (http://holmart.com.au/online/prod256.htm)

At $100 they are not very expensive, and I don't think they would be all that hard to replace yourself.

Cheers, John.

They are easy to replace, just make sure your front wheels are off the ground so you can bleed the system once you refill by turning the wheels form lock to lock a few times with engine running until all is reasonably quiet .

exact same thing happened to me a few days ago

car sounded like it was supercharged to the shit - whining like crazy. turns out i had a leak and power steering fluid was completely empty. a simple 5 minute fix and back to normal now

my old one did this... typically low fluid will cause it

Thanks again for the help.

Just had a look at the power sterring fluid levels - basically empty. So the service should fix her all up.
