If you were to remove the rear section Muffler/Resonators and replacing with 3 in straight through, what effect would it have on performance, fuel usage, sound etc, given that the car has no other mods to exhaust, intake, tune etc

Absolutely!!! Been there, tried that!

The only way to get the "V8 note" that everyone is chasing without drone is to spend money on a decent cat back like a defillipo, pacemaker, perry or something custom from a GOOD exhaust shop.

They MAY add a small amount of power and COULD improve economy ... but the real benefit will only be achieved if you get a tune as well.

Another vote for NOT just adding some straight through pipe. Tried it. It failed the 'can I live with this for more than 10 minutes test'. Unfortunately for a decent note that doesn't drive you bonkers you will need to spend some $$ and get a cat back or full system.

This link is all about welding in a helmholtz pipe to cancel the drone. It can be used when striaght pipes replace the rear mufflers and also to add to a lousy drone muffler (3" Xforce for example). It works by having a pipe that is a 1/4 wave length long at the revs that drone, hence 1/4 wave length to then reflect off the capped end, arriving back in the main pipe at 1/2 wavelength offset to cancel out the incoming wave. Length they used is around 28", but I believe that a 1800 rpm drone frequency of 120 Hz will need a 24" pipe. Sound velocity depends on exhaust temp so some fiddling is needed. It can also be done by incorporating a helmholtz chamber that looks like a hotdog ... in fact the standard exhaust has them as does the HM catback. Just needs a bit of arithmetic to size it (4" OD, 10 " long is close and 1 " hole joining the outer pipe to the inner pipe). After hearing a straight pipe with this antidrone pipe, I reckon the sound quality is not as good as a proper rear muffler with internal chambers like a HM. Not bad for a low cost solution though.

Don't expect much power gain though ... the std rear mufflers don't absorb much power, hence no matter what you run out back, you can't do better than no mufflers. About 3 kw gain running a better rear setup, so it is all about the sound you end up with not power.

I think it's more the mid muffler/hot dog resonators causing the in-cabin resonance.

I've got straight pipe from the cats back and there is no drone. With the mid section in tact and straight through rear mufflers only, there was a bit of resonance in the cabin.

Anyway, straight pipe sounds like this:

Wow Ron if that mod is proven to work and depending on the sound factor, if it eliminates drone it could put a lot of exhaust manufacturers out ob business, it seems an easy enough job for a exhaust fitter.

Would be keen/interested to see if anyone here tries that mod and what the results were. If I had a VE I would give it a go for sure. (hmm wonder which of the boys i could convince to try that.

 may not as effective as the $2 washer mod though. LOL

They are crap on a VN, they are crap on a VT, and they are [insert correct answer] on a VE.
Drone city at cruise speed. Forget about whether they sound good up and down the rev range, it is when cruising that you will lose your sanity...:teach:

This sounds mental as!

Is your exhaust like this: Extractors - High Flow Cats - Twin 3" Pipe to the diff - Rear Mufflers - Tips

???

Hey there, sorry no pics sorry but my setup is as follows: Stock headers->stock cats->dual 2.5" straight pipe->x-force 2.5" straight through sports mufflers.

I'll try to get some in car vids and possibly a driveby on the wkend.

cheers,
Allan

if you don't mind me asking aedeau, how much did it cost you for the custom exhaust installed?

Ron SS,
how do I work out the domensions of a Helmhotz "hotdog" for a 2 1/2" system? I think the measurements you gave in this thread were for a standard 2 1/4"??

Thanks

hey there, no probs; it cost me $20 for each bit of pipe ($40) and then $80 for the labour . So $120 all up. Personally couldn't bring myself to buy one of those $3k catback systems that pretty do nothing but make more noise. I'm sure if I got a tune I would pick up a few rwkw as per the claims of those expensive bolt on jobs :1peek:

I removed rear mufflers and installed hotdogs in place, Droned right at 100kms and was anoying but it sounded so good ,Ithought I would experiment a bit. got some no name dynomat for $30 and lined the plastic spar wheel well and now the drone has deminished to barely noticeable. $220 for hotdogs and $30 for Dynomat

OK so my local exhaust place today took off my mufflers and put just hotdogs and made it straight through to the tips (from the last flange)

Sounds the same. Maybe a touch louder.

Nowhere near as good as the youtube clip posted earlier.

Spewing, not happy with it - waste of dollars imo.

Which mufflers did you remove the rears or the mid? When I went straight through on the rears only, there was a noticeable increase in sound vs stock. When I removed the mid section, it upped the noise level again.

Just to clarify, when I deleted my mid section, I also go rid of the 2 hotdog resonators.

Your video is insane sounding.

My car, I had the X Force exhaust on it.

I pulled off the rear mufflers, right at the last flange, so out came the mufflers and tips.

Then I put on a new pipe with a 90 degree bend in it (to get from the flange to he back of the car), and there is a hotdog on it.

Should I have pissed off the hotdog?

I said to the guy can you make it any louder? He said yeah, we will just pull off the whole exhaust from cat back.

I think he was joking, but it had me pondering .....

When you say your car had an xforce exhaust on it, do you mean xforce rear mufflers only or an xforce catback exhaust?

From your description, it sounds like you removed your xforce rear mufflers and replaced them with hotdogs? If so, then yeah, you will probably notice no difference as the xforce rear mufflers are straight through in design anyway. You will probably get slightly more noise with the hot dogs on there, but nothing too drastic.

If the rest of your system is still stock, I'd recommend cutting out the big mid muffler underneath the drivers seat and the two hot dog resonators straight after - This is what I've done to get the sound.

This is the mid muffler you want to remove:

I know this is an old thread but intersting, if I do this to my stock system, say straight though from cat back cutting out the muffler and hotdog, then replace the rears with sports straight through mufflers, will I still get dronning, Ive been searching for the best way to get a nice exhaust without spending big $$?
