Hey guys,

Ive done a search through the forums, but just wanted to confirm which engine oil i should be using for my VX SS.

Its a LS1 stroked to 383, and is running a large cam etc, making around 330rwkw.

The car is a weekend drive, and is driven fairly hard (allowed to idle till warm, but then often reving to ~6000rpm).

What engine oil grade (like 5w40) and what brand would you recommend. I dont mind paying for royal purple, i just want to know what is best for the engine.

Cheers, Errol.

10W60 all the way fully synthetic.

Brands are the muchness, just depends on how deep your pockets are.
Castrol is a good recommendation.

Castrol Edge 10 - 60 is my personal choice . In saying that it is always best to check with your engine builder for their recomendations .

I always get it from Supercheap when they have got it, they dont seem to keep a lot of 10w60 on the shelf.

luckily my son works at our local Supercheap so when it comes off the truck he will put it aside for me, better still i also get a 25% discount

tried all the oils mate and in my opinion ULX110 10/30 OR 10/40 is what im using and its not sythetic.

I've used Edge 10-60 for the last 2 changes and so far so good.
I did however get a recommendation of Motul 300V, but wasn't too sure about it.
It's expensive as hell though.

or

Mainlube 175 Synthetic Race Oil SAE 10w60

Just depends on how deep your pockets are really. Some people also swear by Royal Purple but I have never used it.

i think out of all the synthetic oils i have used the nulon is the best. in my car anyway but have gone from synthetic now and wont be going back in a hurry.

why dont you like synthetic wldls1?

tom

well for a start there is no zinc in synthetic oil. zinc is good for cam lobes, rocker gear and so on. synthetic oil leaves a film around your bores. causing less piston to bore sealing. we get caught up in what we are told we should use by big companys and all that does is line there pockets. there are a lot more benefits to using mineral oils. you just need to get the right one. people will shoot me down but im happy using it and have had great results compared to synthetic oil. its a each to there own thing i guess.

interesting,

do they use additives in synthetics for the lack of zinc ?

not sure mate. i dont think they do. im not telling anyone to use what i use just telling what i use and im impressed with this product.
im sure there are a few others on the forum that use it with good results.
BIG SHAUN being one. if i was to go back to synthetic it would be nulon for sure.

I am another advocate for the Castrol Edge 10W60....Always used semi-synthetics before in my Monaro and since changing over to this, it runs better, idles smoother and quieter - as one would expect given the thickness of the oil at operating temp.

So far so good.....

Hey guys,

Sorry for the stuffing around, but im not considering doing a full service using Mainlube products.... EG Engine, gearbox, diff, power steering, as well as installing magnets, plugs and leads and coolant/brake fluid.

Its going to be fairly expensive ($1600 service) but hopefully will keep my SS running strongly. I will keep you posted.

Cheers

You're all on the money. (mostly) :yup:

Of course Mainlube 175 Synthetic Race Oil SAE 10w60 is the ducks gutz however, is that's a little $$$ for this time of the year my 2nd choice would be Edge 10w60.

All Mainlube engine and hydraulic oils have bucket of ZDDP in (sorry mr catalytic converter) that said and done, I have never seen a rooted converter over using Mainlube Oils with ZDDP however, I do acknowledge the sexperts say its not good for them :)

Did some one say this weeks the end of the one and only (ever) mainlube sale. :yup:

I've used the semi-synthetic HPR10, but now only use Castrol Edge 10/60.

I think there was a thread a while ago where Penrite oils were discussed - or not-discussed and there were a few pictures posted of the inside of a particular engine / heads...

1BEAST2NV - check Mainlube's section out, Steve explains some of the required characteristics / protection - at 100c - that a 10w60 oil provides, when compared to the other grades of oil.

As for me - I cannot afford Steve's premium product - unfortunately, so every 5000k's the sump gets a fresh fill of Castrol Edge 10w60. I've been using it for about 3 years now and it is all good.

cheers

I think I'll just go with the same stuff, I too cant afoord the big $$'s for oil.

and the castrol edge 10w/60 has been pretty popular so i've read :D

thanks

I've been using the Mainlube 175 Synthetic Race Oil SAE 10w60 for over 12 months now and I'm very happy with it's performance. The sv8's cammed ls1 revs a bit more freely and it's quietened down the valve train a little as well (especially at cold start up) so it's a win win here and I rate it very highly

But fwiw I used the Castrol edge 10w/60 for the 4 and a bit years prior without a hitch so I rate it as well ;)

*Dragging this old thread up because it has a lot of talk about Castrol 10/60

I just bought some 10/60 and when I got home I realized it was Castrol Edge 10/60 TITANIUM. I've always put SPORT in it.

Is there any difference between the titanium and sport, or is it just a name change?

It is the lastest version of the 10W-60. Supposedly a change to a better additive package. I may flog my stock of the superceded one on ebay :jerk:

Aaron will be posting his findings soon ...........................?

We just did back to back dyno pulls with Mainlube 175 Synthetic Race Oil SAE 0w40 & 10w60???????????????????????????

The difference on a 330 kW VE with Mainlube 175 0w40 and 10w60 was "0"

So there you go all the "it will slow it up Gurus?"

No difference on a performance vehicle with Mainlube Race Oils from the lightest to the heaviest engine oil :) (however, the filtergrams showed much less wear metals with the 10w60)

The foot has spoken!

Cheers

Steve
