View Full Version : SIDI V6 feedback.
old holden V8

G'day.
I just thought I'd ask for feedback from SIDI V6 owners.
Particularly the 3.6 litre variant. (In the SV6, Calais & Statesman)
How are they in the real world? Economy? Powerwise? Towing?
Also how does the A6 gearbox feel with the V6 engines?
Thanks!

don't think you will find many people with a run-in SIDI engine, will probably take till the 15k service to start seeing proper results I would think
Had a couple come in through work now as company vehicles. My thoughts the 3.0 is gutless and with the reduction in Torque that the Alloytec didnt have bundles of in the first place dont bother towing anything with it. The 3.6 Calais with the A6 feels a lot better than the Alloytec but is let down by the A6. Surely Holden can get this thing to shift and make decisions better than the way it does?
Also dont be fooled by the fuel economy claims we are seeing no better than the Alloytecs as seems to be the general consensus reading the reviews. So the 3.6 is a great bit of kit in terms of power and refinement just let down by the A6 and not as great as they make out for the fuel economy. Better than the Alloyec by a country mile though for driving fun and sound.

I've got a MY10 SV6 with a 3.6 SIDI motor and love it !!!
Early days as its only got 1,500kms on it however have done a few trips on the highways and the econemy is sensational. Power wise I run mine on E10 and again think its a gun, pull really hard right up to 160kms and handles the same at 160mks as it does at 80kms.
I have a tow pack but not yet towed anything so can't comment there. My last Commodore was a VT so the new 6 speed auto is very different, still getting use to not having to go past 30% throttle to pass someone.
All in all I love it and not at all fussed that I didn't spend the extra $5k for a V8.
Also once you hti about 4,000rpm the engine gets a bit of a note going which is pretty cool also.

My MY10 SV6 has about 1500 kms on it - so far so good.
I should preface this with that I have jumped out of a BF2 4.0 litre / 6 speed auto into the SV6, so my comments echo what I have come from. Also, I was very nervous about getting the MY10 SV6, mainly because I was not real impressed with the MY09 SV6 that I had tested previously.
Like others before, the new gearbox / 3.6 engine combination seems to work very well. The gearing seems well aligned with the engine, much better than the previous 5 speed / 3.6 combo.
From a fuel consumption, the computer is saying about 14l / 100km - but it's still needs to be run-in.
Sorry don't have any comments from a towing perspective.

Thanks Krizto. Exactly what I was looking for. Interesting comment about only using 30% throttle to pass someone. Do you just use 'D' or manually shift down?

Anyone else out there?

I still think its over priced or too close to the SS.
A question for you SV6 buyers, why not go the standard SS as its very similar excl engine and better seats etc?
Not having a go just curious, I know a SV6 is enough for a lot of people but just curious...i'm sure the thought crossed your minds before signing the dotted line!!!
Do a search, i wrote up a bit of a review after driving the entire range at the Media launch.

i do alot of highway driving in my SV6, around 800-1000km a week, I use on average on the hwy 6.5l/100km, even had it down 5.x a few times in the weeee hours of the morning. Its got a pod cai, so fuel economy is a big issue for me, while a v8 would be nice just not practical for me

This has been debated TO DEATH, but again, the reason this motor was introduced was for fleet business, as SV6 is the most popular private buyer model. Much of the fleet business is 4 cyl these days, a competitor VE couldn't compete with.
When you take this information into account, compare it to how Camry and other 4cyl cars perform.
Suddenly, 3.0 sidi starts to feel ok my friend...

C'mon Ryzz, you know how hard people find that to use...
Here's the link to Ryzz the Featherfoot's launch drive. ANY car's real world fuel economy is mostly down to how people drive them. Drive it like numerous reps and enthusiust forum members would drive it, and economy will dive. Drive it efficiently using your brain a bit, and economy massively improves...

Does it feel more powerful? Not sure, but it is more responsive :)
Re: the SV6 vs SS comment: Unfortunately as a company car, I am restricted to the SV6 - otherwise I would have ordered a SS :)

G'day P.D & Ryzz.
I read your excellent write up on the new SIDI engines, Ryzz - but wanted some 'real world' feedback on them.
I thought there might be some higher mileage drivers out there - they are the ones I'd like to here from!
I really don't give much weight to short drive reports anyway, I'm afraid - I'd much rather real world drivers - in real world situations talking about them.
For example, I bumped in to a fellow I know 'round the town here who does mowing - and tows. It was only a brief chat, but he seems to be happy with his SIDI Omega. But he did tell me it was pain to get in & out as he is a big bloke with the sweeping design of the front doors. He has donged his head already a few times!
Interestingly, he came from a Patrol, before that a VT wagon. The Patrol had a few issues (a late model) and so he went back to a Holden for the reason of spares/service/parts availability/costs compared to his Patrol.
As much I would love a SS-V wagon next time, realistically speaking, it will probably be of an Omega/Berlina/SV6 variant. Like so many others, with other commitments, and a large family that's how it pans out for me.
Cheers

I just leave it in D, one the way down to the Island I put it in Sports Mode a couple of time and its really a wank thing IMHO, I can see a use for it if you were towing to stop the auto from jumping up and down gears all the time but for day to day D is fine.
A question for you SV6 buyers, why not go the standard SS as its very similar excl engine and better seats etc?
My wife & I looked at the SS, the SS-V and the Calais-V Sportswagon and it came down to a few things:
# Fit for puropose
# Insurance
# Power
# Features
# Price
Currently my wife has a 08 Yaris and I had a 07 CDX Astra, the Astra is gone and the plan is to have start a family in the next 18mths or so, we test drove all and the sedan was the first choce then was the features. Although the extra bits in the 'V' is nice to have they're just that, nice to have. next came the motor and power, Siubhan said for a car thats going to be for taking the kids to school, shopping, etc. a V8 wasn't required and given she'll be doing a lot of small trips the fuel consumption was a bit of a worry. Then was insurance and purchase price, we had a budget and also the a SS would've fell in there we thought that extra $$$ would be better spent on the mortgage .... ohhh yeah, and I'll end up with the Yaris :bawl:

Hi laurie,
Mate I have a 5week old 6 speed SV6 ute and have just clocked up 8000ks. Towed a large enclosed trailer to the sunshine coast and dulby in western queensland a week or so back and got a average of 18L per 100Km. Tralier had about 1000kgs in it. On the way back to sydney averaged 7 - 8L per 100Km.
Towed another dual wheel trailer back from coffs last week, which was empty and still averaged 18L per 100Km.
Normal driving with a mix Hway and city get approx 9L per 100Km
Likes - Its a ute and its a company car
- Drives well on the open road
Dis Likes - Lack of Torque, so stall it all the time.
Not a bad car for the money and al least i still have the clubby to go home to.
Hope that helps.

Yeah heaps more power, better acceleration, and just under the torque output of those gutless pieces of sh!t aussie 5 litres people used to love (and many still have fond memories of)...
Perhaps the light clutch is more the problem for the driver concerned...:hide:

I was driving down the Logan Motorway last weekend in my eight, doing the speed limit and a SIDI 3.0 next to me managed to keep up, even on the rise. I was impressed after all the negative press. Nice green colour, but it didn't have four pipes out the back like mine.

If it was the Poison Ivy Green you saw then it would have been the SV6 3.6L SIDI rather than the 3.0L SIDI. If it was Karma then it could have been an Omega or Berlina 3.0L SIDI.

I'm pretty sure it had a 3.0 insignia on the side.
Since that Age report that tore the poor old Commodore to bits, I've been trying to notice how that fits with daily driviong. Even in a place like hilly Brisbane, I reckon driving on the flat would be 95% of the duty, so I can see merit in the SIDI 3.0.

The 3.0 doesnt have a badge saying that it is a 3.0
The Badge says SIDI with Spark Ignition Direct Injection underneath that. So was the car you saw an Omega, Berlina, SV6 or Calais?

Peak figure doesn't mean a lot. The flat torque of the 5.0 is what makes the difference.

Ok but take a look at the torque figure for an XR6T over a BOSS GT. The GT has higher torque and power figures. The 6 is quicker over the 1/4.

i have the new sidi 3.6 sv6 ute, i love it.
it really is a great car mind you my car before that was a mazda bravo so needless to say the holden is way more advanced. i have the 6 speed auto and like some one else mentioned it took a little while to get used to driving it as the clutch can be a little fiddly and there were a few stalls involved.
fuel economy isnt too bad, i drive from townsville to cairns fairly often which is about a 800km round trip, im averaging just under 9L per 100km which isnt great but then again the car is still relativley new (only just had first service). i think a CAI would go along way to improve this, but im not really sure which one would best suit the new sv6.
obviously i would have prefered a nice ss ute but being that im only 19 the insurance would have been way too expensive, im already paying $1000 a year with aami which is alot more than the bravo haha.
apart from the shit wheels and ride hight of the ute im very very happy with it, there are a couple of little ajustments or improvements that could be made that would make a huge difference though.
cheers

Which one is it o.0?
You should have picked Voodoo or Poison Ivy. Both those look hot.
At Tony Ireland Charters Towers, there was a poison ivy sedan and voodoo Ute OMG...

yeh 202rwkw for an untuned SV6 SIDI??
The VE SS makes around 200-220rwkw normally, my non SIDI SV6 makes 150rwkw with a CAI and some exhaust work, you sure???
Krizto
12-12-2009, 07:23 AM
A stock SV6 with SIDI is about 160rwkw ... to hit 200rwkw a bit of work would be needed, CAI and exhaust wont give you 40rwkw.
