Bought a Tom Tom XL30 and didn't realise you only had 30 days to update the maps . Rang them only to find out they want $140 to update ! This can happen every 6 months . All they do is email it to you to download . How much money are they making out of this ?
It would be nice if we could email this download to each other ?
Buying updates is for suckers.. I have a universal branded GPS running 3 brands of GPS software (Igo8, Tomtom and Route66) and all have latest Aussie maps. Check out the threads here.. You might find what your looking for for Tomtom ..

Google and torrents are your friends
whereis (the ppl that do the maps) are a testra owned company so no suprises there
From my reading, The censis maps are what determine the new updates to the GPS maps.. Usually this only gets updated every year or so.. I think the last one was 2008. Companies who do the maps for Tomtom write there own updates i guess to keep the people who buy there prododucts updates. It's a little like Garmin who also have there own thing going on so they can charge a heap for different map packs like trail ones. The little device I run has Windows CE and I like the I-GO Myway program cause it's starting to get 3D buildings. The US and Europe maps already have them and some Aussie maps have some landmarks now.

I just updated my GO720 and my mums OneXL yesterday with the Navcore off a 730 and 830.xxx Maps.
I don't even have TomTom home installed anymore.
got garmin gps maps fully hacked on my nokia n85, works a treat.
i dont think many buyers realise when buying a gps unit, that they actually have to pay for the maps, and frequent updates, im also sure the salesmen leave this little bit of info out of their sales pitch

You're kidding??? :weirdo: You have to stop to get it out and if it's a complex route keep referring to it! My Tomtom is great and 'free' updates from certain sites. :nyuk:

My garmin can run OSM (open source maps) which are free.... however (!) when I went to Australia at the start of the year and used the open source map in Surfers, it would often indicate that I was 50m either side of the highway so I'm not sure how accurate the OSMs are

Word, Holden Satnav sucks though. I tried with a mate copying the DVD that the unit reads from and a few other tricks to get around it but there's no way to do it. Mate lives int he outter east suburbs of Melbourne and when he bought his brand new VE his house wasn't even on the map.. lol.. the house was 4 years old..

I doubt that mate. Take it from someone who works with gps systems that run military precision keys. We can get our systems pretty tight but not that tight, so civilian gps receivers havent a chance. A couple of metres perhaps is a bit more realistic.
pretty sure the 340 and 140 have current maps on 'em anyway, they're pretty recent releases.

both good reasons to get a GPS!!

actually i think i meant the gps distance was really accurate, eg: if i travel a few meters , it will pick that up, so yeh, even current speed travelling, is almost 100% accurate. not bad for a nokia mobile !
