One to watch out for:
Seems a bloke on one of the work sites parked his 10 month old VE ute the other morning and came back later to find a crack in the windscreen and a thin flume of smoke coming from the dash. He opened the door and the whole thing went up in a fireball. All his tools gone, car gone.

I think most people will notice if their car is on fire :goodjob:
No photos, no explanation, the car could have had shoddy aftermarket or dealer electrical wiring done, who knows he could have left glasses on the dash and they set it on fire in the sun?

No I'm told it was dead stock. The smoke was finding it's way up though the dash. The police forensics are apparently investigating so when I find out the results I'll post 'em.

Might be a good excuse for an onboard fire system....

Hmmm, think I'll forget the full systems and consider just an extinguisher. Problem is that due to my disabilities I don't know where I could have it mounted that is legal and easy to reach for me............

Let's all just drive around uninsured because they might ask a few questions. :goodjob:
Let them ask me a million questions. It's protocol, I'd be concerned if they didn't ask a million questions, wouldn't you? Seeing as we all pay for fraudulent claims through our premiums.
Fire extinguisher- if the calais catches fire would I really want to save a half burnt car? No. These are a first aid appliance which to me is only of any use if the car is burning and someone is trapped inside or if there is a risk of it spreading.

I'm guessing it's dry powder, so make sure you don't write your car off with that instead. I dunno if insurance will cover dry powder damage

like I was saying to you today Ev, mates car was written off after a dry chem extinguisher was used

Yup I'd often been told it was corrosive but never knew of a case where it'd caused an issue until ya told me bout your mate. CO2 for me when I get home
Was talking to the OIM on the ship today who's an ex Navy fella that did and does fire fighting training and he said it's actually the insulation on electrics that the powder corrodes :teach: :)

I'd still rather pay the $400-odd excess and get a new car.
Im a rating one for life, so no worries.

Very good point - if it starts burning while I am in it, I am jumping, I aint gonna be unclipping a fire extinguisher. Secondly, let the sucker burn, I would rather see it go bye bye and get a new one!

Not to mention those little piss-ant hand held jobs have a hard time putting out a ciggie let alone a car on fire, and while your all thinking of racing out and gettin one and that,ll save the pride and joy.....if you dont know how to use an extinguisher properly you are only putting yourself at risk and creating a shithouse mess!!!! :eyes:
LET THE SUCKER BURN AFTER YOU AND WHOEVER ARE FAR AWAY!
Forget the car savee yourself!

That's fine for those of you who aren't stuck in there because you can't walk without their walking frame, or in 2ajmanvell82's case someone getting his wheelchair out of the back for him. I don't fancy becoming a crispy critter!!

Mine is insured too, including the mods. The problem is no one will insure my car for the standard value + 25-30k worth of work.
Man you must have slow reflexes if half the car gets burnt before you're ready with the fire extinguisher. If I had an engine fire I'd certainly want to save it. If I had a small electrical fire I'd certainly want to save it.

I wonder if he smokes?
I was at a haz substances course a couple of months back, and the lecturer was a firery, says that plastic ciggerette lighters left on the dash in hot weather can start fires...
Anyone ever heard of this?

It's possible - the glass and angle of the windscreen and the sun may be able to create a magnifying glass effect but you would have to be extremely unlucky AND you'd have to put the ciggie lighter in the right spot.
I have seen a few VE utes recently at Pickles Salvage with cabin fire damage, but this could have been attributed to anything - vandalism even.
