Hey everyone,

I just accepted a job in a fairly outback place (job promotion earning double the pay!!) and I have a super low SSV ute on 20's and it just won't work out there. I have a few weeks to get a new car and just tossing up ideas?

* Keep the ute in storage for 12 months (just a 12 month contract) and buy a basher for 12 months like a $10,000 Pajero/ Landcruiser etc

* Sell the ute and buy something 4WD'ey for the similar money of the ute and stay debt free?

* Sell the ute and buy something like a 2 year old Mercedes Benz ML320-ML350- ML500 - BMW X5 - Range Rover Sport and get a loan for $20,000-30,000?

* Sell the ute and get a newish Mazda CX-9?

Hmmmmmm

P.S. It needs to have a few seats as I am going to need to cart a few people around etc.

I wouldnt drive the auro cars out there.. cars get full of dust out there.

Sell the ute get rid as much dept as possible.

Landcruiser would be good out there..

Euro cars are expensive to fix in the city let alone in the bush..

mikeparkinson - you're right mate. I think if I go too "fancy" in my price range they will start needing things done to them.

The Klugers are nice. The middle of the range one would be the go. A nice one ith 15,000ks is for sale on the net for $39,990.

If you're going to get a Toyota, get a Prado or Hilux crew cab 4L V6. Oh and sell the ute.

if you're only thinking kluger ,
then think Adventra / Cross 8 or 6 .

Are you minning or on the land .

You shoulda negotiated a company car .

if you love the SSv that much, stick it in storage and buy a 75 series crusier ute deisel. it will go for ever and i doubt you will loose any money on it over 12 months. But then again i bet you'll find it so handy that you wont want to part with it. That happened with the one we bought. Wouldn't get rid of it for quids. so handy.

I think i remember reading somewhere that Cx-9s are really bad on fuel economy. Some people were apparently reporting 20+L/100km

How about a diesel land rover? :)

Stick the ute in storage and buy either a Pajero or Prado. If you are considering something about $10000 I dont think you could go past a 95-98 model Pajero. I used to have a 94 Pajero and it was really nice to drive, comfortable, reliable, and it would go anywhere. It will give you 7 seats also. I would stay away from the soft roaders such as Klugers etc or you may as well use your ute, just put standard springs and wheels back onto it.

I wouldnt buy an old europian car...to costly and parts are VERY dear. We have a Kluger grande 2008 and love it it has everthing a rangie/X5 has but cheaper to get parts.. I would sell the ute and buy a new GLXR Triton Deisel good alround work/comfy rig.

All I can say is good luck mate, not much money floating round for these type of cars at the moment. Been trying to sell my Maloo, its at a crazy price and still nothing.

I would go with something like an sr hilux v6 auto.

GOOD LUCK

Spot on.

If you're going to be located out the back of bumf*ck ... stick to what works & will be relatively easy to get parts for.

Landcruiser or Patrol & if only a 12 month contract ... shelve the ute until you come back.

I think a few of you guys missed a bit...
He needs seats and will be carting people around....

I reckon sell the ute. What you will save on storage or and repayment you may have can go towards a new ride when you get back.

It depends on what thecountry is like where you are going. Honstly i would love a rangy sport or X5. But really i wouldnt want the thng getting full of dust dirt and shit you will get out there. You may decide you want one when you get back and it will be sick to be able to go for the odd bash out bush in one of those but it will clean up easily afterwards...

I reckon get a early 2000's Patrol. They are cheap as chips and bulletproof. not as bullet proof as a cruiser, but alot cheaper. You might even chuck some big muddies on it and have a heap of fun out there getting in and sometimes out of bogs in it. Its heaps of fun, but you wouldnt do it in a Euro.....

Stuff the softroaders.....

Good luck

I'd sell the ute and get a Land Rover Discovery 3 with the superb 2.7 litre Turbo Diesel. They are doing 2005 models for about $40K.

The advantage of this vehicle is that it can handle the rough terrain with ease, would be great for carrying people (think they have air suspension), are very comfortable and when you get back to town you won't have to rush selling it, as it will be an economical ride around the burbs as well. Oh and they look pretty smart for a 4WD as well.

Just throwing up another alternative..............:1peek:

This is possibly a bit cheeky and may be in contrevention of forum rules ( if it is mods please delete).

I'm looking to sell my patrol in the new year, its a 2005 3lt auto with plenty of goodies, great for touring (did Perth to Syd and return last year). just had its 90k service. If you wanted to know anymore, send us a PM.

Sell the ute if you can, you can always buy another. If it was me I would prefer a reliable safe car in the Outback.

Consider diesel, more economical and potentially cheaper in remote areas. The just superseded Prado would be nice, it has 180 litre tank. Their resale value is not too bad. Toyotas seem to be quite popular in the country.

If the budget will stretch............

If you are after real 4WD fun.........

If you want state-of-the-art technology.........

If you really want to stand out in a crowd..........

Buy yourself a LADA!:smilesandbanana:

I work on the rigs mate and spend time offshore and in the desert... In regards to outback, cant beat a new hilux, or landcruiser... Both great out there... Also the new tritons/pajeros are great as well... Dont buy anything unless its Turbo Diesel mate or you'll regret it...
