Hi Guys,

A few Alloytec questions:

How long does the Alloytec cam chain last?

How hard is it to replace the cam chain? I heard that the cam cover is glued on and difficult to remove. Is this true?

How much does it cost to get a new cam chain fitted by a Holden dealer?

I think I read somewhere (most likely on this site), someone having to replace one after something like 116,000 Km, don't know if this is common. I've never replaced a chain in any car I've had (I don't have an alloytech), so to me if replacement of chain at those Km's is not unusual, then that's crap, may as well have a 4 cyl with a rubber band that needs changing at say 100K.

theres 3 chains, have seen 2 driver side bank chains snap, few bent valves but thats all.. 1st car had 70k on it but only had 1 oil change at 25k and the other had just under a 100k and also had a poor service history, not sure what the cause is it but it would take at least 6 hrs to replace them. would be a good idea to change the tensioners too while your in there..

Now that I've dealt with those idiots trolling in your thread...
Chain life varies. Reason I say that is that when Holden narrowed the original chain during VZ to cut down noise, some examples suffered chain stretch due to a faulty batch. Typical life of those was under 20,000kms, and usually only showed up because the engine light came on due to sensors giving readings the PCM didn't like. Otherwise, they could last 400,000kms or more.
You need to have a good mechanical knowledge to tackle these. They run three chains, and normally use a special tool to make sure the camshafts are correctly locked into position during this task. If any one of the 4 cams move during assembly, you will have a problem. Gaskets and sealants used are of no concern on these motors.
Can't help with cost sorry.

To the orignal poster, shouldnt' cost anymore then $300 to replace it, I was looking at aftermarket cams, and would have needed a replacement cam chain, so not much at all, thats the VE's though.

Thanks guys,

A work colleague has a VZ SV6 that had the cam chains done at less than 100,000km's but (I understand) at more than 3 years. If they're good for hundreds of thousands of km's with good service, that sounds OK. I have no idea of the service history.

The original cam chain cover can be removed and refitted? It's not glued on by Holden? It can be removed without damage?

The timing chain cover is re-used (with new gaskets/sealant where applicable of course).
