Wow, never new this could happen, then again i don't know jack about
diesel engines..

More info on the subject can be seen below, it's long winded,
but does a good job of explaining why it happens.
cheers

I had this happen whilst driving a Semi once, I managed to shut it down before it done any harm, all we needed was to put a new turbo and intercooler on it. Only a mug keeps driving after a turbo goes, you know something is wrong as it goes with an audible bang and there is a very significant power loss as well as the smoke...lots of smoke as you can see with the BMW.

I don't think it's quite as simple as that. When the seal blows it means that engine oil for the turbo bearings is being drawn into the engine induction and the engine then runs on that oil. If you turn-off the ignition which then shuts off the normal fuel supply it makes no difference since the engine is consuming its own oil supply as fuel, and with a diesel there's no butterfly to close as per the throttle.
I saw the same thing once before with a brand new boat engine which was also a BMW engine funnily enough. Just ran at max revs until it self-destructed ....

Yeah true, but (usually) a seal blows and rapidly gets worse as it gets chewed out allowing more oil to enter combustion chamber at an ever increasing rate. I shut the engine down straight away and no other harm was done, I was there. I understand that sometimes a catastophic malfunction of a seal could happen but this would usually show up very soon after its' installation as it must have been damaged during installation.. Also the oil needs to get hotter and less viscous to be drawn into the inlet to be burned the oil pump produces mush less psi than the fuel pump and in this scenario the engine is revving harder and harder with the throttle butterfly closed.

:yup:.....I use to drive a semi years back while at Uni. A co-worker was driving down the interstate heard a loud bang, smelled smoke then suddenly fire appeared in the cab. He did is best to get the truck off the road and pulled the parking brake and jumped. His leg was starting to get cooked. The truck went up in flames and got so hot that the roof of the truck was distorting and was collapsing.
Turns out the side of the turbo broke off and caused the truck to catch on fire.
Boost sounds good until something like this happens.

Heard of a diesel loco having a turbo seal let go. These engines are big, displacement about 260 cubic inches for EACH of their 16 cylinders. They run at maximum revs of 1100 and can produce over 4000 horsepower with incredible torque figures. Back to the turbo seal. Seal let go and the oil started to be ingested into the engine via air induction system. Engine revved out of control until it self destructed, blowing bits of pitons and rods out through the side of the block.

That would be a 'toy' at 260ci!!
EMD's latest 2 strokes are 710ci per powerpack and the 4 stroke is about 1065ci per powerpack
710ci is 9-1/6-inch bore with stroke is lengthened to 11 inches. ...
The 4 stroke is 16-cylinder, 265mm-bore, 300mm-stroke GM-16V265H

fire extinguisher down the intake stops them...that or heaps of rags to snuff them. Remember they still need air as oil doesn't have it's own O2...
