Ive done a search and havent found what I was looking for.
2nd gear has recently gone (got really noisey when putting in gear), it still goes in put you have to be careful. My question is, is it something major or can I get away with a rebuilt or less, or should I replace it with a second hand one. All the other gears seem fine. Is this a common problem with these gearboxes, its out of a VY SS, stock apart from 2.5" zorst and pod filter. Any help would be great.:goodjob:

Put it this way they aren't as bulletproof as people often think. Its not like they don't have their issues. But it is rare enough. I know at least one other car with the same issue as you. I myself replaced my T56 a couple of months ago with a brand new later one, but for other reasons.

Macca, what was wrong with the other one with the same problem. Is it better to rebuild or replace with a second hand, price and reliability wise.

My mate had 2nd gear go on his VY SS ute. Would usually just crunch if he tried to put it in. Sometimes it went in but mostly he had to skip 1st-3rd.

Had it rebuilt and had no issues afterwards.

He hasn't fixed it yet. But it looks like syncros.

Ive had a rough price on a rebuild of 3500, but without seeing it first hand, its a price for the last one they did. Or I can put in a second hand one with 80k on it for 2000 . . . opitions on which way to go.

Can you get a VE box in there as they are close ratio and better from what I have heard compared to the last of the boixes used in the VZ's which were renowned for shitting themselves

There is a Holden dealer in Victoria ( Barry Bourke ) who has been advertising in Street Commodores for new MM6 boxes to suit VZ ( Tremec TUET6000 )
Not sure if it will fit yours but they are $2,850 inc GST ? There may be a Dealer nearer to your place with the same deal ?
Mal Wood would be able to tell you suitability ...

I had mine rebuilt a couple of months ago. It would have been about $3500 but i got it cheaper as a favour. I believe that it is now a nicer feeling box than any of the newer ones I have driven. The selector/shifter(stock HSV) is tight and precise and it's nice and quiet. The difference, I assume, is the time taken to rebuild the box and shim everything precisely unlike a factory built box. The thought of a new one for under $3000 is definitely appealing though.

Very good idea to call around for replacment cost verse rebuild. Rebuilds do add up quick. For a complete rebuild kit, bearings etc it is around $1200. Add labour and it will be over $2500 easy.
If you just repair second gear it is just a strip, change the syncro and keys for second gear and put back together/refit. Maybe $1000 with removal and install. Problem is once it is open there maybe issues like damaged bearings from removal, leaks from reusing the bearings, seals etc.
Just have to weigh up the odds and what your budget is. If I had my time again I would jump on getting a well priced new box.
There is some companies that do exchange deals too with a rebuit box but you dont know the km on the box you are replacing it with. These are abotu $1500-1800 but you still need to add in removal and refit of the box.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. Still deciding what path to take.
