View Full Version : VE SSV ute, reverse sensors necessary?

Hey there guys,

i'm think about getting a ute as I've got the odd necessity to carry furniture and other bits and pieces around to and from the house. My question; how necessary are the reversing sensors on a ve ute? I'm thinking about getting an SSV ute, don't care if it has a G8 nose or not, but I definitely want an auto after using the shitbox manual in the clubby /end rant

Anyways, in the clubby I've found these sensors to pretty much be a necessity when parking in car parks, as the the car is so big and chunky. I'm sure the ute is at least the same soft of size.

So what do people think? Should I be speccing for a reverse sensor or look at a retrofit camera like wonky did here:

I'd fit parking sensors to any car I bought. All cars have at very best a decent blind spot back there, and most vehicles have metres of blind spot there.
VE ute, with it's high sides and back, can use all the help it (you) can get.
I'm not a massive fan of cameras, as everyone I've seen with them stay glued to the camera screen, rather than doing regular checks all around whilst performing this operation.
Very bad habit that one.

Hey mate, i'd definately be getting the sensors. I didn't even think about it when i bought my ute and i wish i did. It'll hopefully save from ever hitting those little poles that sit lower than the tailgate, and if your getting a hard lid it'll decrease visibility even further. Think of it this way, if their going to cost you X amount and you dont get them, you could almost bet your left one that a repair bill will exceed that, and once you've repaired it you still dont have the sensors. So yea, i'd definately get them

Thumbs up on sensors!
I was with a friend recently at the mall. We got into his truck and had a chort conversation about where were going. He started up the truck and his phone rang, a minute later he hung up and put the truck in reverse. His back up sensor went straight to red and kept dinging. I jumped out to take a look since we couldn't see anything. A young boy was standing right behind the truck about 1 foot away from it waiting for his mom who was trying to get his sibling into a stroller a couple cars down.
Backup sensors are in my near future.

Hey mate, i'd definately be getting the sensors. I didn't even think about it when i bought my ute and i wish i did.Steve, all the SV6/SS/SSV are fitted by the dealer after the car is done by one of the dealers preferred 3rd party workshop....so you can put them in anytime. the SV6/SS/SSV only beep and dont display on the screen like the Calais ones

They aren't totally necessary BUT they are a huge help.
I would def tick that box when ordering any new car. And if i was buying a used one i'd get them installed.

Very necessary esp if you have the twin hump tonneau cover!!

Dont bother with the sensors mate...
For about $150 total you can install a reverse camera to see everything behind you.
Easy to install yourself. Do a search and go that way instead of having those stupid little buttons on the back of your car

I had a VE SSV ute with ERG hardlid and it was a pain to reverse park couldnt judge anything. I was actually in the process of getting a reverse camera fitted.
But circumstances led me to trading it in on a E1 Maloo that has parking sensors standard . They are a God send and as others have said I dont think I will buy another vehicle without them.

Could you install a reversing camera and put the screen just under the rear window?

This is something i've been mulling over.

There's a 6" mirror one in there somewhere as well. Here (http://www.aerpro.com.au/list.php?pcode=ARV6M&cat_name=rear-view+camera+systems&cat_no=100&product_name=6%22+MIRROR+REV.+CAMERA+WIRED&cat_sno=).

I had reverse park sensors on my SSV sedan and didn't like them anywhere near as much as those in my VZ SS as they were too sensitive!! Every time I backed out of the garage they'd start beeping due to the proximity of the opening - bloody annoying and tends to desensitize you to them!

I'm sure with a ute that you need something as I've seen lots of utes with dents in the tailgate. I  my reverse camera, especially now I've had the VIM mod done so it no longer cuts the display at 3kmh.

I see where PD is coming from but anyone with any brains won't rely on just the screen display but will also continue to check their mirrors. Total cost of my reversing camera including VIM mod is less than dealer fitted reversing sensors!

Chris

Am leaning towards something like this would like to see it in the flesh to see how it looks
It comes with a remote I wonder if it can be activated by putting car in reverse
I would prefer the versions that provide a replacement mirror and work seamlessly but this is certainy an option thanks for posting it up

Stu

Would then need to get it installed

with the cable from the mirror i guess it would be easy to disguess it

i like the sensors on the maloo that show on the screen at front is that the same as the ves ssv etc

The sensors that display on the front screen are only for high spec models eg. Calais V and above. They don't display on the screen in SSV, certainly not in earlier SSVs though I have a feeling I read somewhere that maybe they do now???

You could probably install it yourself.
The pdf (here (http://www.aerpro.com.au/product_manuals/ARV4M.pdf)) says that it can be wired up so that it only shows up when reverse is engaged. Otherwise it is a full mirror.

A mate of mine who is an Auto Elec has recently fitted one of these 6 inch mirror cameras to his WH Statesman and has added the forward camera also, the reverse camera automaticly switches on when you select reverse the forward camera operates with the flick of a switch located on the mirror.

When he returns from holiday I plan to have the same fitted to the ute.

i wouldnt worry about the sensors, for the same price the dealer would charge you for the sensor kit you could fit a reverse camera.

Once you've had a reverse camera, everything else is second rate and you will never go back!!

Oh, BTW, l heard Alpine are bringing out a new camera system with 4 or so camersas that hook up in sync, it's supposed to give you a full 360 deg view around ur car on the screen.

Get 'em in as part of the deal, or arm youself with a price from a reputable local car audio store who can do the supply and fit for about half what a dealer charges.

I've got the sensors on mine, be nice if they activated a little quicker, but they are worth it. Though I'd go the camera if i had the chance.

I wouldnt bother with the pic of the bundle you have posted.
Have a search on here about reverse cameras.
It look much better to retain your stanard mirror and have the camera come on the main stereo screen with either a push of a button or, if you prefer when reverse is selected.
No limit are the sponsors to speak to.
A reverse camera with a hardlid is a godsend.
I'm with Wonky as I love my camera too!
