Hi guys,

What is the limit for lowered cars here in WA ? Where is the best place on the car to measure it ?

Cheers

I believe the lowest you can go is 100mm minimal ground clearance measured from the lowest part of the car. I don't know how accurate that is but it's what I've always been told.

I second that you may think its easily done but youd be suprised how low exhausts/cats hang.

not sure about WA but most states it can also be tested when the car is fully loaded with passengers and luggage. Also not allowed to lower more than 1/3 of suspension travel

I always thought it was 100mm too.

I personally wouldn't go such a low car again, it gets tiresome trying to get over speed bumps and smashing your exhaust. :(

PS yes im getting old

Yep, definitely 100mm in WA. Can be tested with fuel + passengers etc if they want.

It's also worth the hassle for how much better it looks :p

Dan

Edit: To test you'll need to put something that is 100mm on the end of a long stick and make sure nothing under the car hits it.

yeh it is 100mm/coke can although my old car was quite a bit higher than this and they still stickered me for it...took it over the pits past first time..so yeh if it's even close to 100mm a prick of a cop will still try it:flipoff:

Stock ride height is gay, if you upgrade ur rims you have to dump it or just doesnt look rite.
Agreed on the stickers tho

If you want it real low bags can be engineered with the right kit in WA

The legal height is 100mm when loaded springs or bags
With bag it must self level on start up and maintain 100mm when loaded which is what the self leveling will do

Coil overs are illegal as well. So it would still fail.

Are coilovers really illegal ????

I'm thinking that coilovers (unless engineered) are illegal due to the fact that they can be adjusted externally..........I think as I'm not 100% sure

white lie
02-01-2010, 08:36 AM
Depends how picky the inspector is over here. I know of heaps of cars that have gone over with coilovers and nothing has been mentioned.

The fact that you can adjust them down below the legal ride height gets frowned upon but provided you take it over at a legal height, its unlikely they'll pick them.

The coke can height thing came about years ago because the legal limit used to be 125mm (5") ground clearance and cans were roughly that height

Its been 100mm now for more than 50 years so it must have been along time ago

Coilovers are illegal unless engineered as far as I know. I also belive to be engineered the coilovers must not have the ability to lower the car below legal height requirements. Most people never get pinged for them however.

It is 100mm if your cars stock ride height is 100mm or higher. The fiesta Econetic is 86mm from factory.

I got pinged for being too low yesterday. The cop measured my car on about a 20-30 degree hill with his block of wood on the end of some doweling. I cant say it was entirely accurate but the car is a little bit low. Thats all he wrote on the ticket so hopefully the supercharger won't cause me any dramas (or I cry). Half way through a damn brake upgrade too... not good timing aaaat all. My first VE licky too.

Not good Jai...it will be interesting to see what they say about the blower

jai

So I just cut a stubby cooler down to 100mm and did some measurements around the car...

Front Bumper 105mm
Diff 110mm
Rear Subframe Front Mounts 103mm
Front Subframe 90mm
Drivers Side Skirt Lower Edge at rear 102mm
Passenger Side Skirt Lower Edge at rear 95mm
Exhaust at Diff ~ 85mm
Middle Muffer - ~90mm

So Plod measured on the passenger side skirt - I clearly asked him to Identify exactly where he measured the distance (half way mark of the rear door). He measured this side as it was the safest place for him to test. So in essence about 5mm out - for whatever reason (spring sag, 5mm out by Pedders who installed the suspension etc. I havent changed the ride height from when I had the kit installed. Booo.

They have to measure on a dead flat surface for an accurate reading as most roads camber down towards the gutter..

jai
24-11-2011, 01:39 PM
I guess its pretty hard to dispute a work order when youve had time to modify the car. I mean they could offer to retest but Im 5mm to low on the same side on a flat surface.

I suppose i could still write a constructive email critisizing their methods and their U turn over double white lines close to an intersection with no indicator....

If this is true it feels a bit discriminatory to others who are around the same height... I got done recently, bout 5mm too low. IMO, if they are going to police this... Target guys with chopped springs or badly warn suspension. Not cars who have had work done professionally with superior parts and who's cars handle BETTER than stock. I don't think this effects safety, as they claim, if anything due to the better handling it may prevent an accidents should the circumstance arise.

Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Rules 2002
Part 7 Vehicle configuration and dimensions
Division 2 Dimensions :

67. Ground clearance

(1) In this rule —
ground clearance of a vehicle, means the minimum distance to
the ground from a point on the underside of the vehicle, except a point on a tyre, wheel, wheel hub, brake backing plate or
flexible mudguard or mudflap of the vehicle.

(2) A motor vehicle must have a ground clearance of —

(a) at least 100 mm at any point within 1 m of an axle;

(b) at least one-thirtieth of the distance between the centres
of adjacent axles at the midpoint between them; and

(c) at any other point — at least the distance that allows the
vehicle to pass over a peak in the road with a gradient on
either side of 1:15, if the wheels of one axle of the
vehicle are on the slope on one side of the peak and the
wheels of the next axle are on the slope on the other
side.

car has to be 100mm at the lowest point with 4 people in the car... if the inpector is being picky, when i put my car over 2yrs ago, i failed twice on the height, i packed 5 3mm rubber rings I made in the strut towers just to scrape over with just me in the car when they tested it on over the pits... but he was a nice guy and passed me after showing me how he tested it. He just warned that my car is to low and cops will pick on it.
Havent been done yet since. my extractors are 85mm from ground currently
the cars side skirts are just over 110mm
