Im with RAA. Covered for exhaust, intake and VCM Edit (inc replacement windscreen, loan car)
Current Cost: $790.05 annually

Looked into Cam, valve springs, etc. upgrade but RAA wont cover it, though their performance division of H2P Insurance would be more than willing to provide cover for less than $1000 a year.

every year i ring around for quotes and nrma come out infront every time by a minimum of $300 with the most being $1300 dearer. its only due to where we live and the amount of claims from hitting damn roos, damn them to hell.

Yeah, i'd definately shop around. Do the quick online quotes of other companies and you'll be surprised how much you can save.

And ask your chosen insurer if they will match the price of the other insurance company. Keeping in mind that excess amounts do change up or down the premium.

how hard is it to get insurance for a turbo car single turbo car vy vz

SS V8
02-01-2010, 09:16 PM
Price...prices...prices. Not just the $$$ you need to consider. :)

Make sure you tell your insurer everything about your history, including suspensions and those voluntary ones you do for 3 months as opposed to run the risk of 12 months with no more fines...you know what I mean. Also make sure you get it detailed on your policy in black and white and not just an "okay" over the phone from an insurer quote sales person who is really only after their quota.

Why ? because insurance companies are very quick to take your $$$ then if there is any chance they can get out of paying a claim they sure as hell will.

Example: 45 year old male colleague clear driving history, points all but gone from speeding so he decided to hand his licence in for 3 months, and clear the slate so to speak. His insurer when notified over phone said all is okay since his license wasn't suspended or disqualified. Then he had an accident with a cost to his car of $19000 when he ran off road at a "T" intersection through a fence into a paddock, no other vehicle involved and no alcohol in his blood.
Insurer would not pay, sighting he didn't notify of his voluntary handing in for 3 months, he argues he had, no record of that they said, so he took them to court, guess who won.
So as with most things today the $$$ isn't the only thing you need to consider. No good taking the cheapest quote promising the best cover if you have not told everything, so be warned.

Here endeth the lesson

As for myself 51 years, male, rating1 for life, E1 R8, AAMI $1260 QBE $784 and same prices for E2 R8 coming in Feb so go figure a $500 difference, I've read and compared policies and still can't explain, just hope it's AAMI being greedy and trying to get payback on all the TV advertising costs. :vpo:

youngest driver is 32, never made a claim ... $1700 a year.
Hell I even pay $500+ per year for my 1996 Corolla.

Here's one from Sydney:
39 - clean driving record for 10+ years
05 VZ SV6 - catback exhaust, DVD, 18" wheels covered for 19k plus
AAMI $1050 with windscreen and discounted rental car.
In fact will cover any modification, as long as it's street legal.
Most of the others rejected me outright when I mentioned the exhaust.

Got a quote for a 20k 05 Calais 5.7 - $100 less than the SV6

Also got a quote for a 24k 04 Adventra LX8 - about $250 more.

Who can figure.

And yes, getting insurance in Sydney does suck.

DRAGON

I'm from Syd and paying about $3300 for my 2 cars.

The VS Wagon is around $1700 a year, and the VZ Calais around $1600 a year... both with Shannons.

I'm almost 27, clean driving record, only 1 claim made back in 2000, and I'm the only driver of both cars.

Sydney prices suck!

Don't know why some people are whinging about sub $1000 premiums.

Don't know why people are whinging at all. It's not like you buy a car and then 'discover' the cost of insurance - it's just another cost to be factored in, including petrol, rego, servicing, tyres, loan interest, and even depreciation...

Until recent posts people had missed including one key piece of data which significantly affects insurance premiums and that is where you live!! You try insuring a car in Dandenong (high rate of thefts and accidents) and then price the same car with same driver's details etc in Upper Manangatang North (i.e. out past Woop Woop) and see the difference!! Our premiums dropped noticeably in 2008 when we moved from outer suburbia to outer, outer suburbia.

My SSV ute is insured with AAMI with every mod listed (lowered, rims, exhaust, extractors, tune etc etc) for around $800. Lifetime rating 1. Borderline outer suburbia and country.

Under 25s can insure with them only if you are insuring the vehicle for minimal use. Now over 25 and still with the ute insured for minimal use for agreed value of $27500 I pay from memory around $480/yr full comp.

Should add the ute is a '01 VU SS with a fair few mods, all listed on policy.

When I got finance for the Maloo I also got included in the policy another form of insurance(forgot whats its called) that if my Maloo was written off after 12 months and AAMI was only going to give me eg 30K and my loan was 50k this insurance would cover the 20K cap. Yes in the long run I know im out of pocket cos its market value but at least im not paying a loan for the Maloo which I would no longer have. By memory its about $20 a month thru Esanda. I also have rim and tyre insurance to the value of $2300 a year for about $2 a month

I am the same with my ute, every last detail to what I have done is covered on my policy. Being the age of my vehicle (2001) and the agreed value being 28k they asked to sight the car. Not an issue and the bloke who I spoke with on the phone actually showed up to inspect the car.

Turned out great he was a BMW nut aswell (and good at his job) and I ended up insuring both my E21s with them too.

$1400 comp with NRMA including free glass replacement.

Although its due to come down in a couple of months when iv paid off the loan... the chick from NRMA said itd probably come down by about $150-200 a year once it's no longer under a car loan.

My wifes car had some panel damage from some scum walking past and kicked a few panels in . Rang AAMI told us to go to a particular crash repairer he had a look booked us in(there now) and they are a good crash repairer too. I have a funny feeling AAMI now own them.

Depends who you're with and your age (some companies allow no mods at all, or no mods for under 25s).

With AAMI I inform them of my mod and they send me out paperwork including that on my policy (absolutely critical to get it in writing or you won't have a leg to stand on).

In the past it has never increased my premium but I added my sound system upgrade to the policy after I'd already received my renewal notice and with the updated policy received a new renewal notice with an increased premium of $13. I don't know whether it was just due to the timing of my upgrade falling just before I renewed or if I can expect similar in the future for mods that increase the agreed value.

True - there was an example on here recently where an insurance company also gave someone a very hard time when a claim was made and possibly even weren't going to pay up if they determined that the young driver was driving at the time of the accident!

Just cars are a rip off, they charge huge premiums because they will cover anyone and anything. Shannons i have found to be not only one of the best priced but there cover and helpfulness is second to none. When you first ring them they ask alot of questions to determine if you are a "car enthusiast" but once you have cover once, you can cover any car for life.

Cheapest isn't always the best....although it helps a lot.

We want cheapest and best.

What ever the cost; you need to make sure you are completely covered. The last thing anyone needs is a company avoiding paying your claim, at a time when you expect their support.

Insurance is there to be your best friend when you need them the most. That is what you pay them for.

And if you've financed your car, top it up with GAP Insurance. One premium that covers the term of the loan, which will pay it out at the time of total loss.

I hope this helps.

Just Car Insurance sucks except if you're under 25 and drive a modded car, or are basically any age and drive an import. Why don't you try AAMI or RACV Ed given you're on rating 1? They only increase the premium if the mods increase your agreed value.

Last year when the ute was new it was insured with every mod listed and consequently an increased agreed value for exactly the same price as a stock car - I know as I checked it online. My renewal recently came through (carried over from previous car, so ute is only 10 mths old) and when I added $1,000 of audio system the premium did go up by $10 - $15.

Some people are dubious about AAMI but you're already effectively with them anyway as they own and/or underwrite Just Car.

had a vz calais v6 (at last renewal was only 3 years old) and was around $1000. just got my first renewal for the monaro (2002) and its over $1200. caught me a little by surprise so its fairly stock and much older.

could this be because its a monaro, coupe, less common, higher chance of theft? i drive 10km to work, park in a secure car park and live in a very very safe suburb....

Mainly I suspect because you've gone from V6 to V8 but also because Monaros are more popular with thieves.

My rego is the killer its 994 including third party personal which is fixed for my car in QLD. At 433 for insurance I was blown away. I can't believe that some people are still paying 700-800 and there in there 40s. Must have a lot to do with location. AAMI was the cheapest for me. If you get it online it's around a hundred bucks cheaper.

Too many variables to compare premiums properly. Location is a big one, some people take a bigger excess to reduce their premium, some have market value others have agreed value, some are under finance others are not, my VX SS is around $800 for an agreed value of $21,000 (only has 63k on the clock), oddly enough my daughters Mazda 3 is almost exactly the same premium, both with the RACV.

I wouldn't be too worried, all insurance companies have raised their premiums after the massive spike in claims after the storms down south and over in WA. I used to be in insurance sales and $665 for a 20 year old in WA in a modified VZ Exec is a bloody excellent price! Agreed value is normally a more expensive premium option too.

Repost from here: (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=125232&page=2#post1714420)

Hi all,

I just received a letter from Ryno with a renewal offer for my Monaro CV8 comprehensive insurance policy. It was up about 20% from last year so I decided to have a quick look around. Here's the annual premiums:

Just Car $1,300 for market value of $24,100
RACV $2,000 for agreed value of $35,000 (didn't ask for mods)
Shannons $2,150 for agreed value of $35,000

The following wouldn't give an online quote for this car:

AAMI
GIO
Shannons

The following wouldn't insure a modified car:

Youi.com.au
Virgin Money car insurance

Given the above, Ryno at $1,600 a year for an agreed value of $40,000 is actually good value despite the increase! Plus Ryno service has always been first class.

I should probably add that the car is a non-daily, has a H/C package and other performance mods, and a mature driver.

Hope this helps someone else.

Cheers

Update: I just lowered my agreed value to $30k for an annual premium of about $1,400 with Ryno.

I've got about 150kg+ in the car...so that adds up to a fair amount of $$$ for my insurance.

Prior to listing the stereo gear, I was paying about $110 a month with CGU. Switched to Just Car and covering about $12K of stereo gear made it $148 a month. Then I moved from South Yarra to St Kilda East and it went up to $160.

I tend to agree with you, same goes for vehicle statisics, my VX SS seems to be getting dearer each year, probably because they are becoming cheap and falling into the hands of younger rev heads and more are being involved in accidents. But mine is garaged every night, I have never made a claim, no traffic incidents, good suburb, both drivers 60, multipy policy and years of loyality discounts and still pay $885 with RACV, they do have a good agreed value on it of $20050 due to low km, so I am probably paying for the actions of others. As a matter of interest I did an online quote with 'Budget Direct' the other night, they were $300 cheaper than RACV but was for market value only, no drivers under 30, there was no provision for 'Agreed Value' quotes online, you had to ring. Maybe RACV are getting expensive, might look around next year.

Didn't even register who I was replying to............ Yeah, can see where you're coming from, though in the case of car insurance I suspect it's far easier to analyse claims for theft and accidents and determine that this is or isn't a problem area. You are certainly paying based on factors outside your individual control or circumstances but that seems an unavoidable fact of life with car insurance........... :(

After reading through this post, i decided to give shannons a call and see if they could beat Just Car insurance for my ute,

I'm 26
VY SS S2
nil mods as of yet
One at fault claim in Jan 2008

Just car (current insurer) :
$1200
full comp R1 protection
Insured for $20,900 (only paid $16,000 for ute)

Shannons:

$1480
Full comp
Insured for $16,000

I'm sticking with Just car, never had any dramas with them, they have always been really helpful even when i didn't have my rims insured back in 08 when i had my accident, they said we'll work something out and ended up repairing them!

The guy from shanons was really surprised they were more expensive than Just Car, expecially when i said they insured it for $20,900.

QUICK GUYS!!
NRMA 10% beat ANY QUOTE OR RENEWAL. Just did it for my XR6 Turbo modified, beat Just Cars (who had me on a much higher excess too). They don't even need to know about modifications - all they say is everything has to be legal.

:rofl::goodjob:

You drive a modified turbo XR6 - what's legal about that unless it's engineered? I'd be very cautious if you go to make a claim about your mods.

haha yep. If it nots engineered then probably 2/3's of the mods we do are illegal from things like darker tints through to mafless tunes etc.

Same applies with Just Car Insurance - they state will insure any mod AS LONG AS IT'S LEGAL.

If you want to get technical, ALL insurance companies have a clause in their PDS that you vehicle has to be roadworthy. A vehicle with illegal modifications is not roadworthy....

See what i'm getting at?
I work for a big insurer and trust me, all contact for insurance companies is on recorded phone lines, if they state on the recorded phone line that they will cover the modifications, there is nothing they can do come claims time (to get out of the claim).

Me: What about my modifications?
NRMA: Don't need to list them, they just need to be all legal.
Me: Well I purchased the car a few days ago so i've got a RWC, does that mean that you will cover the vehicle with modifications?
NRMA: Yes, that is correct.

Now 25, still with AAMI. Same cover, and same premium, but they are fine with the mods i have listed. Which are, cam, stall convertor, full exhaust, OTR, mags, suspension and personalised plates. I was rather surprised they didnt tell me it was going to cost more.

Seems it has changed again. I got the new cover letter from AAMI, and the girl who i spoke to when i told them about all of the mods, didnt have a clue what she was doing (exact words from the bloke i spoke to the second time around), and didnt know where to list the mods i told her. So that is why she said it wasnt going to be any extra.

The premium has gone from $120 a month, to $150 a month.

On a good note though, my excess has gone down from $1400 to $500.

No issues bar one speeding fine just under 4 years ago. Lucky they don't go back further, cause when I was younger (motorbike days), I probably rode and drove around more without a licence than with!!

PS: For anyone thinking of 'excluding' their previous convictions/accidents: PLEASE DON'T. I sell finance and insurance for a living and Insurance companies can completely deny your claim leaving you with a big debt, and nothing to show for it if they can prove non disclosure, and believe me, they try anything they can to void your claim..
