Hi All,
I have tried doing a search, I am sure this question has been asked.
I am looking at getting a car that is still under new car warranty.
I was wondering what is the requirements of being able to comply with warranty?
It's not due for an oil change for another 6000km and it's already done 9,000km.
I am a believer of changing oil every 5,000km along with filter.
I believe not using thin oil I would like to use something like 10w60.
I don't want to put this oil in, then have Holden put in a thinner oil when it's due for it's next service.
Or can I get another qualified mechanic to do the service for me and that way I can ask him or provide the oil to be used?
Or can I do the services on the car without voiding the warranty?

Thanks,

Tyre biter

I have always done my own oil and filter changes and I've never had an issue with my dealerships nor warranty despite my not being a mechanic.

When I drop the car off for any scheduled service I just tell the Service Dept. that I have done it and ask not to be charged for parts and labour for the same. Again, I've never had an issue with four Commodores now whether that be oil and filter changes, plug changes, air filters, fuel filters, etc.

What I do always use however is genuine parts (filter, etc) just to ensure that my servicing and therefore my warranty can't be questioned.

As to the oil type, I don't think a Service Dept. will or even could readily test what oil is in your engine. Having said that, not sure you ought to deviate much from the specified viscosity - I imagine much R&D has gone towards the specifications issued but perhaps those that know more about oils can better advise.

Cheers, TB

Holden warranty clearly states that it must be serviced in accordance with their recommendations. This doesn't mean by a franchised dealer necessarily, but it must be done to equivalent levels. Any failure attributable to the work of the outside shop will not be covered by Holden warranty. Doing the services yourself gives no evidence of a suitably qualified tradesman having performed the work, making a warranty claim extremely difficult.
It is up to you to decide whether you want to go using thick oil, but it's not recommended. Metal quality, tolerances and oil quality are all much better than "the old days", where using thick oil was common thinking.

Unfortunately there have been a couple of issues in VZ 6.0 with lifters. I'm pretty sure that's the problem Swingtan had with his.

or is it about fuel emissions?

its not about "thick oil", its oil film strength and the thickness of the oil film under high temps and loads. I suspect holden and other car makers do not spec the oil based on Maximum engine life, but rather compliance to emissions.
I am sure plenty of the oil analysts/tribologists on here will tell you wear debris generation can be greatly reduced using differing oil grades.

It contributes to economy gains, but you can't run a thin as water oil in an engine that's not capable of hanging together when using it...:)
Everything progresses in life. Oil quality, metal quality and fine tolerance machining are all better than years ago.

Monta7, perhaps next time you would be better off starting your own thread, rather than diverting an existing thread totally off track with a different topic on a different model to the OP's.
