Hi all,
At 140,000Kms my rear wheel bearings are in need of replacement. I found this a bit strange as my serviceman tells me these typically last 300,000kms+ and has fairly little to do with how it's driven.
The grinding/warbling has been getting progressively worse for the last 10,000Kms and I thought it was actually crap tyres. But sure enough with the rears off the ground the thing grinds and rumbles like mad.
Has anyone else had this happen?
Searching around tells me that repair is a pain in the ass, so it will have to be done by my serviceman, If anyone has had it done before what sort of $ am I looking at?
Thanks

I've heard of a few fronts going, normally when the cars in a accident damage'd the bearing/hub and shows up later with the sound you describe. Never heard of a rear going though???????

Alot easier to replace, I just did the fronts and they were $140 each and as a comparrison I got 225000km from them. It was normal to begin with but started dying immediately after doing some 360's in the wet, so I would say it might have something to do with that.
In the Gregories, for the rear, it says specialist tools are required for disassembly followed by a breakdown diagram of the components. They are about $139 for the lh/rh pair. Just ring a few mechanical places and ask how much per hour they charge x how long it will take..

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
I drive my car hard for a stock V6 and minimal suspension mods, but this still seems a little excessively fast for them to wear.
Bradass your comments about them dying quickly after some slides might have some relevance here, I was in a spinout accident a year ago and the LHS arm, brake, axle, etc were all replaced (snapped stub axle) and the right wasn't damaged, the slide could have really aged the bearing as it's the right hand side that has the issue primarily.
It was repaired properly (great tyre wear & drives better than before) but I suppose this is just collateral. There is significant heat generated in the RHS wheel and brake compared to left after 100km/h driving too. There's no play in the bearing (was told because it's a sealed unit) but the noise is very pronounced. Can't wait to get a quiet ride back :D

BV I was going to point the finger at your accident the moment I read the first line that my friend will be the culprit there
