Last night I parked next to a van at centro new town (tas) that was for sale. It was a late 80s/early 90s possibly mitsubishi and was maroon. Asking price was $4350 or $3450 ono. When I returned to my car my drivers side mirror was hanging by its wire and had some maroon paint scrapes on it.

The guy knocked off my mirror and didn't leave a note or anything. Centro security guard told me there's no vid surveilance on the car park. It happened between 9:15 and 10:30 and I know it was the van.

I've tried searching online, but doesanyone know anything that can help me track it down? Wish I had the plates but obviously I wasn't expecting it to swipe me. Any help appreciated so I can match the damage to his van and seek damages. I know it's not much but it's fair. I would always leave my details or report it to centro.

Sucks mate that assholes can do damage to others property and then just leave.

But unless there is obvious damage on his vehicle matching up to yours, how are you actually going to prove that the van was there in the first place? Even if you do track the guy down he will likely deny all knowledge of the incident.

Silly question, but is it leaving the scene of an accident?

Have you had a look on Tassie cars to see if it's listed there?

I'll keep an eye out mate, I drive around that area alot.

Drive around that area at the same time tommorow see if he returns.. Hobarts not thar bigger place. I'm sure you will spot it sometime.. I would say people usually are creatures of habit so I'm betting he will return back to the same spot sometime.. If it was just a mirror suck it up and just get it fixed.. You'll spend more time than it's worth wasting your time trying to find him.

as far as SA goes no. having spoken to an officer about a simular incident it could only be rendered as that if the person failed to stop to see if other ocupants are alright and or reder asssitance, seeing as the car was parked no it would nto be applicable here.

Thanks guys some good ideas. I reckon it wouldve left a mark on his car... It's not on tassiecars but if I treck him down, I'd like to give him the opportunity to do the right thing in case he genuinely didn't notice it. If I couldn't prove it I'd leave it.

Cheers that makes sense.

My guess would be that there are probably 2 maroon vans in Tassie, so therefore I would suggest sitting on the side of the road one day for 20 minutes. Its bound to drive past.
Nah, only joking, theres probably 3 or 4 maroon vans in Tassie.

Hope you find the vandal.

If the law is the same as Victoria, and I would say its probably close, he has failed to exchange details or take all reasonable steps to do so with the owner or agent of the said property(car). He has committed an offence. When you find him, tell him that someone witnessed what he did and gave you the details of his car. Explain that you want to give him a chance to do the right thing before you got police involved. If he he doesn't, report it to the police.
PM me for some handy hints on doing this:)

I love it.

It's not about the value, but more about my social conscience eating away at me to set this guy straight. Still it'd be nice if we could all be granted vigilante powers for one day with no legal repercussions...

When you think about it, every day people know far more details about most crimes through people we know, etc, then police do because so many of us keep it from the cops. The cops waste heaps of money when they could just promise not to arrest us for a day while we take out the worst of the worst.

EDIT: I've tracked down the van. I called the guy and he's just sold it, so I'll report it to the police. Will update...
