What a tradegy this is, would it ever be possible for the children to live overcome this after not only losing both parents but also witnessing it. RIP

Heard this on the news on the way into work. Terrible terrible situation. I feel so sorry for the kids. RIP parents and I hope their children can recover from such a shocking loss - right at the end of school holidays as well.

Couldn't even imagine how the kids would be feeling to have experienced an event like that...just shocking, I hope they recover from this ordeal as time goes on...

It's sad to hear that story. After the safety message regarding rips was aired on TV late last year it still surprises me how people still panic and do the wrong thing when caught in a rip. Basically they try to swim against the rip and back to shore, where they should just let the rip take them out until it stops or swim parallel to the shore until out of the rip and them swim back to shore. Doesn't help this family unfortunately.

The priority now is to arm as many swimmers as possible with the skills to survive a treacherous rip, beginning with a greater emphasis on survival rule number one – stay calm.

If caught, the advice is to: "Stay calm and float. Do not swim against the current; swim across it and out of danger. Raise your arm to signal for help. Keep one arm free to help you stay afloat."

That nearly happened to me 5 years ago.

My brother got caught in a rip so my mum swam out to get him. Both got caught, but luckily they got swept back over the rocks.. which was painful for them, but at least they lived.

I felt terrible thinking they would die, I cannot even begin to imagine how bad these kids must feel.

Terrible, couldn't imagine the pain those kids must be going through right now.. Hope they get the assistance needed to make their lives the best they could possibly be after something like this.
