All you guys in Sydney be careful. Plenty of McDonalds outlets and other businesses have been infiltrated with fake EFTPOS machines which are taking lots of money from lots of people.

Be very wary guys.

I've had my account frozen (CBA) after suspicous activities over the weekend. I've had $6000 stolen from my account from London. All in GBP.

Hopefully will be getting the money back within 21 days, or so the bank says.

From what i've been told you should be changing your pin every month and always always, no matter where you are cover your hands while entering your pin.

One of the boys at work got done last week as well, over 1k taken out in Canada!
Not cool, the NAB was onto it before he even knew at least and had already cancelled his card and tell him he should get the money back.

Odd thing is he only had $20 in there and they managed to overdraw it to $1000.

Agree the NAB is on to this, they tried for 4k from my Acc about 18 months ago but the NAB rang to confirm amount to be transferred as it seemed sus, so they froze everything and i didn't loose any coin thank god.

Are any/many Australian banks using chip cards instead of magnetic strips? My ASB credit card (subsidiary of CBA) has both chip and strip while we transition to chip only, but that may be quite a few years away for NZ

Be wary of using your card ANYWHERE that anyone else has the chance to handle the terminal....about 80% of terminals.

How the scam works is the terminal is substituted and any transaction details (acc# etc) including your pin are stolen with the terminal. Theives are smashing windows, armed robbery and just grabbing the EFTPOS terminal. Any blank card can then be programmed to access your account ANYWHERE.

ONLY SOLUTION so you dont get scammed......pay cash.

Macca's seems to be having an issue at the moment.

CBA terminals.....ditto.

Funny thing is someone came in to see me today regarding EFTPOS......from CBA......no thanks.

This thread has got me thinking now.

My sister just got done 16K, most likely according to her it was the St George ATM in the Castle Hill Towers Food Court.

All spending occurred in the Merrylands to Blacktown areas.

Yep, my mum works for St George and over the past two months this has ramped up so much they have put on some extra staff to help handle calls and emails.

There are a few things you should be able to do to help protect your money. First thing is NEVER use a PIN with credit cards. Always use your signature. If you have been using a PIN, you should be able to access your account on the net and change your PIN. Change it then don't use it.

Changing your debit card PIN on a regular basis is another way, but i think with most (if not all) banks you need to go into a branch to do that. Also you should be able to set up an authorisation alert service where if a withdrawl over "x" amount of dollars is being requested, the bank will send you an SMS and or email for you to authorise the withdrawl. You should be able to set up SMS alerts for pretty much anything actually. Your banks website will show you the way.

Another way to protect yourself is to do what i have done.
I have two accounts linked to each other. Two accounts, two cards, two different PINs.
My main account is the one my pay goes into and direct debits (eg loans, insurance, bills) are taken out of. I've put the card for that account away somewhere safe, and i don't use it at all.

My second account is my spending account. This is the one i use my card for. When ever you want to make a purchase, i transfer dollars from my main account to my spending account and away i go.
The transfer can be done by phone or internet, is instantaneous and free. Fees to the bank is $5 a month for the spending account and zero for the main account as over $2000 (pay) is deposited into it each month.

Some may see this as inconvenient. I see it as a "screw you pricks - your not getting my money" way of banking.

Cheers
Chris

yep we do the same as Raptor6L. Dual cards, 0 on one card until we need to buy something then instant transfer over the net/phone from the other account.

Over the last 10 years, I have personally worked on numerous banking hacks and 99% of it has never made the mainstream media. The banks do lose millions each year that they suck up and payout to the unfortunate.
