Crunch.

Apparently this happened at Granny Smith Gold Mine here in WA.
I don't have any details. Anybody know the story ?

No amount of buffing's going to get that out!

My guess is that the Cat ran into the Mack because to sustain that kind of damage, the Cat wouldn't need much momentum but the Mack would. And on that surface, it wouldn't be able to get that.

Or it's just a piss weak truck.

Our 88 has been in a few bingles ,backed over a ute ,crushed a trucks cab, not too much wins against them.Cardinal rule is always be in radio contact with the operator, dont take it for granted he has seen you , and wait for him you wave you by.

The truck driver wasnt using proper procedure when he was on the rom. He didnt let the loader opperator know he was there and got run over as the loader backed out of the crusher

Ouch! The driver of the Mack will get a reaming over that i would say!

The Mack had all the momentum those trailers are all full, you're looking at around 130 tonne if it was legal, more if it was just moving shit onsite.
You're right, you are not supposed to sneak behind a working loader.

OUCH.

From the direction of the damage, lack of wheelmarks, way the driver side front wheel is laid over etc, I'd say the Mack was static and the loader backed into it.

Doesn't sound like a Hamptons operator at all, they follow all procedures:1peek:

In the first pic it looks like old mate road train has started his tipping run and not noticed the 88 in the crusher, the front trailer has been dumping or ready to dump you can also see a dump trail in the first pic, those 988's don't have alot of give in them.

Heard about this couple of days ago , apparantly loader was a rental from Coates , it reversed into stationary truck.

this could have all been avoided if the mack driver wore a high visiblity jacket like the cat driver did...

Can some of you mining guys give a bit of basic info here? What sort of situation is going on here? Is the truck being loaded or is dropping it's load onto the ground (one pic looks like the dozer is on a higher roadbase)? There's mention of a tipping run by GMHVNSS - where's it being tipped?

Or is it being unloaded into the crusher that's being mentioned?

ie an 'idiots guide' to these sorts of mining ops? (Which is what I need!)

See this pic. The side of the front trailer is not visible, you can see the ore inside. They are "side tip" trailers. So the side was lowered in the act of tipping when the crunch happened.

The cat would come along, scoop up the pile or piles of ore and dump it into the crusher after the truck was gone.

From what I have been told the truck was parked , the loader reversed into it.

Will be back in Kal by now might go and see mate that works at Hapmtons see if I can get some more info.

I am also a bit basic on this....why don't they use one of those monster trucks to carry the ore around? or is the crush machine a long way from Granny Smith? or is the mine underground so when it is transported on the surface they use normal trucks?
Just interested that is all.

Some of the mines have pits a fair way from the actually process plant , if they go sample drilling and find an ore body they will truck the ore in , the dumpies have max speed of 18km/h I think , over a 20-30km+ distance it just wouldnt be viable , not to mention the maintenance and cost of tyres involved.

The dumys are more economical to bring the ore up from the bottom of pits where the plant is at the same site.

Does't look like a rental as it has "bulkhaul" signwriting on the engine covers, and I find it hard to believe that the truck was stationary as trailers one and three's sides are down indicating he was performing a tipping loop.

What speed do you think the truck was doing while it was moving gmhvnss?

15-20kmh at the absolute most, when tipping this way the trucks are going around on the ROM pad in a big loop at a very steady pace.

Surface dump trucks on level ground (haul roads) will actually hit closer to 40-50kmh, underground dump trucks on the same type of surface will see between 18-24kmh.

Mate works for Coates , trust me its a rental :) thats how I heard about this to start with ...

How long do you think the dumpy tyres would last at 40-50kmh fully loaded mate ?

Unloaded they will go alot quicker , obviously !

We run our 777's an 530M's at 40 - 45 kms fully loaded all the time.......No tyre problems an thats in 55 degree heat

Hamtons will have to put that with there collection of "written off trucks" .....bet Dave an Bart were highly amused lol

Not really, it's all the same. The tyres on those trucks (ultra class) are designed to with stand those extremes, they used to fill them with water to keep them cool but now they fill them with nitrogen as it doesn't expand when it gets hot.

Yep pretty much..

All good Kal....although super pit trucks may run a diff policy...who knows
