Hi guys,

Recently i purchased one of these;

http://www.ple.com.au/?p=snapshot&inventory_id=31011

I havent even plugged it in yet, but now i have some time to look at backing up all my media files on my comp and important files/folders.

Whats the bests method?

Is it literally just dragged in and copy files or there some method i should follow to backing up major/important (to me) files/folders?

Thanks,

Michael.

I use this for our managers laptops. Setup a scheduled task to backup at set intervals, create backups for each day if need be etc etc

You can either schedule it to run at say 1am when your computer is not is use orit can be done on the fly if you like. It can run in the background also so you can keep working.

I wont be backing up everything at regular intervals, just major files, mainly media files every now and then.

Will also back up sisters new laptop, just-in-case.

From looking at that error, you need to have the x86 .NET framework installed.

See if that helps before reinstalling.

I've found with most 64bit apps on Windows, the drivers are 64bit, but the front end apps are still only 32bit.

dont trust a "Western Digital" as your only backup... they are not very stable.
They are noisy mongrels too... I returned two of those ones.

Would have thought they were good enough for home use?

Wow, you'd have to be the first person I heard of have any issues with the WD external disks!

I use only WD disks in system builds as I've had nothing but problems with Seagate over the years.

What issues did you have, USB controller or disk related?

excessively noisy things that don't have go on "stand-by" mode when not being accessed.
And one just died! Would never mount again on desktop.
Way too many cheap drives on the market these days.

Be a bit careful Michael, that that is not the only copy you keep of your backups.

I had a WorldBook by WD and after around 12 months the NIC gave up the ghost, so my files were mostly lost. The model I had ran 2x physical 500gig drives and showed them as a single 1tb drive. This meant that the file allocation was done in the unit, and when that died, so did theability or my files to be pieced back together.

My advice: Use it as a true backup, not just as an external storage.

Pfft .. Get an iMac and use Time Machine .. It's built into the 64 bit OS and 'just works' ..

Dug what do you exactly mean by this?

Im assuming something like, just back up files on my comp with it and not add any files/media onto it which aren't on my computer to date?

If thats the case, then yes thats what im doing....I'll have a larger and better PC built some time this year as this one is getting old and slow, and just wanted a source of back-up, not so much another hard drive (external).

I just bought a NetGear NV+ ReadyNAS this week. Its in my little server room with my alarm, CCTV, modem, router/switch and DVR.

Am in the process of moving all the files from various laptops and the PVR over to it (the PVR in our family room is linked by ethernet).

I bought it empty and then bought 2x 2TB WB Green HDDs. I still have two bays free and it shows available capacity at 1.8TB with the second drive as backup. WHen I get the third and fourth drive I should have at the least 4TB capacity depending on the RAID config I use and possibly up to 6TB.

The good thing is if one disc fails I just pull it out and put another in and 10hrs later my data is back to be spread across the disks. The bad thing is its LOUD and hot so I need to keep the door to the server room open or work out some cooling method.

$1150 from a place in Lidcombe. With the 4TB discs.

As you can see in bold thats the problem im having but yet when i go to unstall it i dont seem to actually have that patch but rather the newer service pack 2.

What do i do now?

Run Windows Updates manually and install any .NET related patches in the optional section.
