Hi All,
Can anyone tell me why the rear Muffler directly behind the tailpipes is required ? To improve the V8 note could these be removed at the rear flange and have a straightthrough to tailpipe exhaust made ?

they have to pass emissions and noise pollution tests, hence all the mufflers, most aftermarket exhaust have that removed, it will increase the sound a bit yes

Yes, you can remove the rear mufflers and replace them with straight pipe. This will be considerably louder than stock. Those stock rear mufflers are massive!!!

Hello drone when cruising...

 true, though if it's a manual it might not be too bad, might be able to just cruise in a higher gear

Yep, dont do it.....its terrible. Mates SSV was too quiet stock even though its a family car so he decided to take the rear resi's off.....it got a fair bit louder and meater but not a nice refined note imo. But by far the worst thing is the ddrrrrrrrooooonnnnnnnneeeeee. It is auto though :1peek:

I can live with that.

I got my rear mufflers removed, and in its place are hotdogs.

Is there a difference between straight pipe from flange back to tip, and a hotdog between flange and tip?

Its way louder now, and I get an awesome (maybe sometimes excessive) popping / rumble down the road when I ease off the juice.

Exactly! Just for my own amusement I tried without rear mufflers (using my bro-in-laws exhaust shop). Sounded loud, but not 'good' loud, and the drone.....fark me.

Interestingly, I also tried a pair of SSV rear mufflers (with the quad tips) on my wife's V6 CalaisV, same result - massive drone. Wouldn't have thought the extra tips would make that much difference considering the V6 and V8 mufflers appear identical otherwise.

You can remove the rear mufflers and avoid the droan by using a Helmholz chamber as per below: It will still be loud, but no droan ... HOWEVER the physics of it won't work on an AFM engine once it kicks into fuel save mode.

More info on dimensions etc here:

a hot dog will most likely have a perforated core, where as straight pipe wont. The straight pipe should be louder than hot dogs.

So i've been reading the other forum.

Could i basically go down to an exhaust shop and for a helmholz chamber or would i have to show them this for them to understand? Would it sound good with stock everything other then tuned and Dus otr? And how much do you rekon it would set me back? This is basically the cheap way of making your V8 sound like one while saving for a straight through?

A proper joint would know what you meant
I spose taking a pic down wouldn't hurt.....

Don't think many are doing it over here, so price I wouldn't have a clue.

I think it would be better to save your $$$ towards a better catback IMO

It should be fine .... probably similar volume to a 3" cat back and less droan than some of them.

The Helmholtz chamber info has come about because guys in the states are doing this on pontiacs all the time.

They sell a thing called a Loud Mouth on ebay, which is a diff-back straight through exhaust:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/08-09-Pontiac-G8-GT-LoudMouth-Exhaust-System-NEW-SLP_W0QQitemZ230426820496QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors _Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item35a6823f90

My guess is that an exhaust shop would charge you around $300-400 ... maybe less.

Make sure they get the volume of the chamber perfect. I think from memory it has to be 29" long and 2" pipe. I have heard of some guys putting threaded caps on the end so they can effectively "tune" out the droan by reducing or increasing the volume slightly by screwing the cap in or out. The bend is irrelevant ... just provides a place to tuck the pipe out of the way.

Thanks for all the info guys.
Does the motor require re-tuning after removing the rear mufflers.

no ... very little difference than fitting a lesss restrictive cat-back.

Of course you will get better performance with a tune ... but that's the case even with a stock exhaust.

save up and invest in a cat back exhaust system it will suit all your needs and it will sound good too. You add on some headers later and it will sound awesome.
