I recently acquired a nice new (demo) Senator. Just picked it up yesterday. Auto. Currently has the stock wheels which I loathed when I first saw pictures of the E2s a few months ago but have grown on me a great deal. They look much better in the flesh.
First impressions are fantastic. There is so much torque! I am surprised at how fast it feels for a stock car, and remember, I am used to some reasonable horsepower with the cammed GTS and monster VZSS. I think the 6.2 is so much better than the LS2 and miles ahead of the LS1, as it should be with another half a litre capacity, bigger valves, L92 heads and more compression.
Plans for it are an OTR and tune. Exhaust will stay stock for some time. VCM are said to have an OTR on the way and I will look at perhaps trying this with PowerTorque doing the tuning. A small cam might be on the cards down the track but I have this car for a smooth mile-eater not a loud weekend car.
Wheels may be changed to a nice classy set of 20s. I am not sure about the 20inch GTS wheels I have in shadow chrome, a little worried that the colour will not match with the body work.
I'm impressed with the MRC tune, comfortable yet nice and firm. Pressing the competition mode and there is a noticeable difference in the ride quality to a more firm result.
The rear end is growing on me as well. To me the Senator is the best looking E2 (I'm sure many will disagree). It looks nice and tough from most angles and the DRLs work well.
Will upload some proper non-mobilephone pics in the next few days. Plus it got dirty in the Brisbane rains yesterday! Hopefully good luck to have it rained on after picking up a new car?
The sales service from Hayden at Zupps Aspley was absolutely superb. I have to say by far the best car buying experience I have ever had. I could not recommend them enough.

Nice ride!
If you can hang in there for another month or therabouts, the new OTR will be ready - and in our humble opinion, well worth waiting for.

Great car mate I reckon that the e2 senator is the best looking imo.
I love the wheels on it ,maybe the car lower it a bit also the ls3 is a great engine and will respond well to a tune and otr and wont disappoint.

Great looking car Simon I think the ride height will settle down a bit over the next few months and I would just leave it alone apart from the intake just to get a bit more induction roar when you nail it. :goodjob:
Now you can do whatever you want to the GTS and not have to worry about it's DD characteristics too much. :)

Is that Evoke?
How does it compare to the E1 GTS?
Yes, evoke. Looks much better in the light of a bright day.
It is a bit different from the E1 GTS. The ride is softer - a combination of the 19 inch wheels Vs 20 and the 'lux' tune to the MRC. There are more little details like the puddle lamps, memory seats etc. One thing very noticeable is the difference between the two MRC modes. It can be easily felt whereas the GTS it's a bit like "is that the firm setting or not?". Gearing seems spot on as opposed to the M6: 6th gear is *still* too tall even with 3.7 diff gears on the HSVs.
Great looking car Simon I think the ride height will settle down a bit over the next few months and I would just leave it alone apart from the intake just to get a bit more induction roar when you nail it. :goodjob:

Thanks Jim. Yeah, I think even with the stock exhaust it would make a decent number. The headers on these HSVs seem pretty good from the factory. tri-y design. Not sure of their size though. From what I have heard high 300s at the rear wheels is not too difficult to make with the 2300 blower.

2400 grit sandpaper will get the rust off the hubs no worries.

I'll try the sandpaper. Annoying rust marks from when the car must have been sitting unused for a bit.

Extended cruise control is excellent, rain sensing wipers are near perfect for changing conditions on a drive. They seem to slow down, speed up and start-stop at almost the perfect times. Suspension tune is superb also. The performance mode on the MRC is surprisingly stiff. Probably since many of us complained we could hardly feel the difference in the modes in the earlier E series (like my GTS but that has had an MRC problem for some time, awaiting a new module). I've been happy with the A6 performance as well. I know it has been criticised in some quarters for its programming but I have found it pretty good at picking the right gear.
Another handy feature for those of us who like being informed about various parameters whilst driving is the standard tyre pressure monitoring. Interesting to see how the pressures change during a drive.
Overall I've been very impressed with this HSV and happy to leave it mostly stock. The VCM OTR and a tune should liven it up a bit but the LS3 is just so strong in standard form that I'm reluctant to stuff around with it too much.

All the things I noticed most in the Grange, the little touches along with the memory on the seats. I was very tempted to get one of these E2 Senators (although I was 100% on swapping the rear bar back to an E1 bar) ... the extra space in the Grange sold it for us though.
Looks great in Evoke, some more photos would be great ... congrats mate.

Thanks Nick. We have got some great rain but a reprieve today. Have you put up any pictures of the Grange? I did consider one of those as there are one or two demo cars around QLD but the kids are still not all that big so couldn't really justify it; I don't think a Grange would fit in my QLD Health house garage anyway!

I agree, the wheels need to go, havent liked them from the start. They would be a nightmare to cleasn too with that many surfaces.
I have the Pentagon 20's and even they (with 10 spokes) are a PITA to clean.

You done the best thing Vulture sticking to the E1 GTS rims. It looks ballistic. The Pentagons in my opinion don't looks as aggressive as the ones you have chosen - wise choice dude. Are te rims currently on the car factory shadow chromed or were they done by you. For some reason they look darker than the factory issue? Might be the photo and lighting.

No, they have been redone in darker shadow chrome finish. I had these wheels sitting around doing nothing so couldn't really justify spending more on wheels when they were about.

Re your springs:
Exactly how much lower front & rear ? (actually - can you please advise measurement from ground to edge of guard lip at the wheel centre line ?)
Assume stock MRC, so how is it coping with what I imagine are beefier springs ?
Any idea of who the manufacturer is ?
Walkinshaw exhaust:
Same tips as the stock E2 or same as VE1 (ie machined dual combination tips) ?
Noise valve on each rear muffler ?
Thanks & sorry ofr the questions !
PS That is one huge HSV emblem on the grille !

I love love love the car it is beautiful but I think I must be the only one to think the GTS wheels do not look all that good - I personally think they don't suit the car but in saying that I have never liked those triangle wheels.. Just my opinion of course :)

Walkinshaw & HSV springs are manufactured by Eibach. :)

Great looking senator, love the new look.
Although I do like the original multi spoke wheels, what size are the originals and what have you done with them.
The originals are 19 inch. I am going to keep them probably unless someone is keen for them. Tyres have a few thousand Kms on them only. Much just swap them around or a change in a few months!

Yes, the springs are made be Eibach. They were designed not to upset the MRC. I am surprised at how well integrated the whole thing feels. Not a great deal of loss in ride quality going from 19 to 20 inch rims and from stock Senator springs to these. It still rides smoother than my GTS (which has the same Walky springs in it) so that must come down to the MRC calibration which I think is better on the Senator. If you want your car much lower than stock then these are no good. They take it down 25-30mm I think. Will try to get some measurements soon for you.
The exhaust has stock E2 tips put back on. No bypass valve. VERY happy with the exhaust, I was worried there would be drone but it is great at cruise. A little 'woofly' but I am comparing it to my cammed GTS and the big-cammed VZSS, which are very 'crisp'. It is not all that loud either so if you're after a massive increase in volume it won't do that.

Cheers, each to their own. Appreciate the honesty.

*UPDATE*
The Senator now has a baby cam :hide:
The boys at Walkinshaw/PowerTorque QLD have added a set of VCM headers (they look completely factory with heat shields and all) Try-Y design; valve springs and a 220/220 cam. Result through the auto is 290rwkw. The car feels very fast in day to day driving. Plenty of torque and with the VE rear end, gets the power to ground and converts it into forward motion effortlessly. It really is perfect. It is quiet when you want it to be but open it up and it growls nicely.
I'll post some pics of the underbonnet variety so you can see just how stock everything looks, especially with the VCM OTR. When Powertorque give me my engine cover back! :stick:

hopefully it was running on 8 cylinders and not 6!

:yup:
:goodjob: on the cam mate, great choice considering the nature of the beast! My Mrs has decided that a Senator is the go when the Grange has racked up enough kms. I love the space of the Grange but she prefers the smaller versions in the HSV range (smaller relative to the Grange anyway). GTS is just getting too over the top.
Anyway ... yours is the benchmark at the moment!
