View Full Version : Does a mafless tune really improve fuel economy?

Hey guys,
Hopefully this question hasn't been discussed as yet, but many workshops believe that after a tune, v8's should receive better fuel economy. Is this true?
I had a VY SS when i was 18 and it had a 2.5" exhaust, intake and ls1 edit but i dont remember it being any more fuel efficient than my monaro is now.

You will always get better economy with a good tune. Your first might have been a bit lacking.

Tunes are done from factory on a generic basis. But as every combination is different then yes, getting the AFR's correct will make it more economical stock for stock

Alot of it is actually to do with optimised timing to generate more torque. If the tune retains closed loop fuelling then the AFR's won't be any different tuned or not. Alot of us do run Lean Cruise Maps. But they did from stock too on the early models and in some cases they were to lean. Later models don't have lean cruise as from an emission stand point its illegal. For those cars eg VE's you can fudge the tune to act like a psudo lean cruise but very few tuners would do it as its certainly a think outside the box arrangement.

I can only compare from a MAF re mafless point of view on my two virtually identically modified and rwkw SSVs. The mafless tune ute only needs to average 40kmh to get 15l/100km whereas the MAF tuned sedan needed to average 50kmh to get that, so the mafless tune seems more efficient.

Yes it does made a big difference on my VYSS..

im going to say no lol cos your right foot will be mashed to the floor all the time hahaha
but yes under normal driving circumstances it is more efficent. less restrictions, fuel air tune is spot on.

I usually average around 14.5 litres per 100 k's around town (av speed 38kph) & get 9.0 when out on the open road. This is approx 1.5 litres per 100 k's lower than when the car had the standard Holden tune.

I see a gain of at least 15% in LS1s and at least 10% in Gen IVs from tunes on stock cars, the cars with improved intakes and exhaust are the ones that do the best.

my km/L are about the same now (maybe a little better if anything) as before i had the mafless tune but im making much more power. the torque and drivability have improved out of site so i must say that mafless tune did improve everything
similar km/L + more power = much better fuel usage

In my experience, no tune I've had since purchasing the car stock standard has helped with fuel economy. I'm not saying it isn't possible to get better economy with a MAFless tune, but just don't expect it to be guarenteed.

Definitely and improvement. 6.9l per 100kms from Cronulla to Shell Harbour sounds good to me!

if its downhill and a freeway the whole way you could pull it off. my car varies between 7s and 10s on eastlink which is a freeway with very slight up and down hill sections

Have found on average with one of Steve's Mafless tunes have bettered my average by approx 2L/100Kms City since I fitted.
Highway is very good. As mentioned previously a good induction, headers & a free flowing Zorst is a must.
Cheers

Charlie, if you understand what is dune during a mafless tune and see the variance in the peaks and lows of the fuel & ignition map on a factory tune, as opposed to a custom tune you'll know why. Factory tunes are mainly designed for emissions, emissions and oh did I mention emissions ? The various gasses produced during combustion can be reduced by higher combustion temperatures so the fuel map is leaned out. Then there are the cruise (closed loop) and cold start times which also need different a/f ratios to make the engine feel all warm and fuzzy and timid enough for Bob the 60 year old calais driver :). Anyway, I had Steve waive his magic over my SS and the consumption figures changed as follows : City 21 L/100km to 16L/100km Highway 10.2 L/100 km to 7.8 L/100km. With this also comes a substantial increase in power with smoother delivery all round, a higher redline and better throttle response. Funny, it seems like I've typed all this before somewhere .... lol Anyway, initially your fuel usage will be higher because the right foot made you do it but after a while you'll see the overall savings at the bowser.
Oh and I don't normally pick on my own kind but there's a fairly dissapointed VE R8 driver in northern sydney somewhere that got a good spanking from a VY SS with just a mafless tune, OTRCAI and catback exhaust.
No braggin, just a comparison. It HAS to be the best $500 you can spend by far :soap:

my STOCK!!!! vy ls1 calais on the highway got 850km to the tank. out of a 75 liter tank thats like 8.6l/per 100km if my maths is right which is prety good i reckon.

Sure does make a difference, my latest usage is 11.6l per 100km all short trips around town (country), steve from oztrack has waved his magic over mine aswell. (VX SS, auto, exhaust & intake)

Thats pretty well exactly what mine was doing stock aswell. Haven't seen economy like that again since I went MAFless...

all my customer cars have returned a 1.5 to 2L /100km drop highway
avg of 8.5 to 9L /100km highway
these's are standard cam and mafless tuned

I am curently sitting about 18L/100km city driving
and sub 10L/100km on freewayz
getting a tune done shortly hoping the city average will drop
coz i never get away from the local streets :bawl:
dont wanna rack up 2 many km's on the car

City driving economy figures in particular are totally meaningless without an average speed. Highway figures we can assume will be around 100kmh average speed.

Did someone put a gun to ya head to go mafless, if not go back to stock if u were getting better fuel economy.
Or maybe go see another tuner cos as u can see the higher average are getting better fuel economy by 1 o2 litres/100 :soap:

I can't tell if im getting better fuel economy since getting exhaust, otr and mafless.
Not because there is no noticeable difference, but because i drive so much differently now.
I used to drive gently, but now any excuse to put the foot down i go for it!! Sounds awesome and haven't got sick of it yet......and don't think i will for a while!

There are many things that can be done to improve economy and whether it uses a maf or mafless is not a factor in it.
