View Full Version : New layout

Is there any way to make the new layout wider?

The old one went from side to side of my monitor, but this new one only uses the middle two thirds.

This cramps up the text making what was once one line into two. More to scroll up and down through.

Harder to read.

Help?

I agree, the layout loads faster but the wide screen version is better for reading long posts.

Looks good though guys, at least things are always being developed!!

Didn't buy that big monitor for nothing.

The fixed width was done for a reason .. it is all about formatting. For those of you with bigger screens try not making your browser full screen ... you can then fit more windows on the screen ;) I have 1600x1200 resolution and have around 4 or 5 windows open at once :D

The problem with allowing the width to be 100% of the browser is that it messes with the formatting and the top title bar is either too spaced out or becomes stretched. You might notice autospeed does something similar. I will see what the reaction and feedback is over the next couple of days before I make a final decision :p

skully: The Blade Runner font is cool isn't it

guys
prefer wider layout ..... is easier to read that way.
New style - subject headings run across several lines, old way most were single line.

cheers

we really need am alernate format that looks like a spreadsheet or explorer-type treeview, so we can all browse ls1 at work - and pretent to be doing work...........

remember that old tetris game with the spreadsheet hotkey

My website - http://www.techwatch.com.au provides me with statistics on the monitor resolutions used by site visitors - I use these stats as a guide when designing new or additional layout.

80% plus of visitors use a resolution of 1024x768 or greater - a relatively small percentage use 800x600.

At the end of the day I don't hard code layout to any particular resolution and let visitors browsers determine how is it displayed.

I would also venture to suggest that while Autospeed may do something similar most popular websites in Oz and overseas don't.

If there is a problem with the stretching of the title bar or askew formatting - I am sure there would be a couple of web design gurus who could offer assistance in this area.

i find the new format difficult to read and I vote for a return to the good old days ;)

I think the new format and fixed size makes the forum look sharper - and I prefer it over the last one. Looks fine at 1600x1200.

The only issue I've noticed so far is when someone posts an image which stretches their post beyond 800 pixels (just an odd look...)

You can take a look at the #1 automotive site in the country fullboost and they do the same .. 800 pixels :p

There is no problem with a lack of web design talent there is plenty of that. You miss the point that it was purposfully limited to 800 to ensure a common look and feel.

I remember everyone saying that this colour scheme was hard to read when I initially changed it but now everyone likes it

Change is ALWAYS unpolular. :bawl:

Did it just get smaller or is it my computer?!

Sidey - it's your site and you can change it the way you feel.

My original post was to point out that I use information from site visitors to work out how I should design and deliver the layout which suits the vast majority of visitors who use a resolution of 1024x768 and larger.

If you are saying the majority of site visitors to ls1.com.au are running 800x600 then it's your prerogative to design the site with this resolution in mind.

Part of my reason for posting in this thread is the mandated 800x600 is quite a bit away from the 1600x1200 or 1920x1440 I run on my workstations so the change this morning came as quite a bit of a shock

The reference sites you mention also use significantly smaller fonts to display information which makes readibility easier.

As for change - generally I love it - this one I don't and I suppose that is what makes for individualism.

Sidey,

Don't take the critism to heart. I think it looks cool, and don't mind the fresh new look every so often. Yep It is hard (impossible) to please everyone. It has been a while since I did any web page stuff, but I'm sure we were able to let columns in tables go on % width. That way the columns would auto expand to whatever the user sized their browser to. Or was that for frames... Like I said it was a while ago... (The Defence Housing Auth. Homefind site)

I don't think the actual resolution of the monitor is the quintesential answer either. Different folks run their browsers at different sizes. Mine is not full screen, or real tiny, but a bit in-between.

Keep up the great work on a top site!

Cheers,
Hymee.

Chaps,

The forum page width is now about 25% wider than my screen with the window fully open.

Resolution on my computer is set to 800x600, what do I do to get the page width to match the screen width?

From the previous posts I presume I need to increase the resolution, but I find the writing (font size) a bit small at higher resolutions.

I freely admit to knowing bugger all about computers.

Thanks for any help.

I did notice the difference, but have not come across any probs with it. New header looks good. I'm using a 19 inch monitor with 1024x768 resolution.

I support the recent sunday afternoon change to the display width - wider than the original change and it appears to keep the formatting consistent

I agree, go the 950 pixels rather than 800 :D :p

Looks good when running 1024 screen res!

It is currently set to 90%

I think I will be leaving it as that.

The top bar is still not lining up with the body of the forum when you click on a thread. This seems to be a recurring prob when setting the width using %

This is because the thread tables have a cell padding .. I am looking through the code to remove the cell padding. :cussing:

JLR
15-06-2003, 06:53 PM
tables are :limpy: , but you need them to layout properly.

HTML:

cell padding=0
cell spacing=0
border=0

I always set the table hieght and widths to fixed sizes.

Oops, by looking at the code on the Forum, you have already done that!

<table border="0" height="92" width="90%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">

Good to see!

(If you's critics haven't noticed - resize your browser and see what happens) That should keep everyone happy.

Come on - all the critics need to come good with some praise now!
