View Full Version : Land Rover Discovery 4?
I realise being a Holden forum this may be a long shot (but this is the only automotive forum I frequent), so has anyone purchased one of the new Discovery 4's yet? My Disco3 has just turned 2 and I'm tossing up whether to update it to the new model (which seems to be getting rave reviews).

My wife had a freelander when we first met.......after that interesting experience I would not even step foot on the same block as anything land rover, wouldn't pi$$ on it if it was on fire. I know the freeloader had a very bed rep (pity she didn't know!) but the lack of help from several land rover dealers while still under warranty was amazing.
Having said that I have heard that their new stuff is pretty good, hope you have better luck than us!
And another vote for aulro, they were more help than anyone before I finally got rid of the evil little turd.

I believe some of the older Land Rovers were a disaster in terms of reliability, but my Discovery 3 has literally not had a single issue in the 2 years and 45,000k's that I've owned it. (Ok, I had to replace a rear mud flap that I cracked when I went through a fairly deep washout, but it only cost $40 to replace which I was fairly impressed with).
Before I bought my Disco I test drove Pajero's, Prado's, Cruisers.... even a Hummer and the Discovery made them look very ordinary by comparison. The real disappointment was the Prado (which I really had my heart set on when I first started looking). Considering the fairly hefty asking price of the Prado I really expected something quite refined. I was so disappointed with the trim quality (plasticy rubbish) and the diesel engine wasn't any better than my existing Pathfinder Diesel.
I have had a browse at the opposing products again and they don't appear to have bridged the gap even compared to my Disco 3, so unless I wanted to downgrade, the Disco 4 is really my only option at this stage.
That's why I was checking to see if anyone on here had a Disco 4 and if so what they thought of it.

One thing about the Prado is the HORRIBLE body roll from factory, mass, price, lack of brakes, new models uglyness. Dont make me go on! And my dad drives a prado as well:confused:

Bah, get yourself a real 4wd. A series !
My 2A ex mil is so damn basic and goes and goes and goes.
I am hanging for the Perenties to be made available at auction, now that would be a nice addition.

I buy a lot of the Landrover mags, latest UK one has a review of the D4 and all the latest Landrover range. Of course as it is a Landrover mag it is not going to be bias, is it!

The whole new LandRover/Range Rover is a step up from the previous models.
They are now owned by the TATA Group of Companies .
There has been so much improvement in all aspects , they are getting great write ups in the motoring world.
I am even considering a new Range Rover Sport for my Mrs. We are looking at the new twin turbo diesel 3.0 (same as the new XF Jag) with 600 NM of torque. I have taken one for a test drive and came away quite impressed.
We were looking at getting a New BMW X5 to replace our current X5 , but I think we will go for the new Rangie. A few years ago , I wouldn`t have even thought about the Land Rover product but they have come along way in recent years . I even like the way they look now and the new interior is most impressive ............Cheers John
PS. Just make sure you have a look at the price of options ( as with other imported Euro Brands), as they can be a bit on the exxy side . I specced one up with $20K of options without even trying :teach:

My series 2A was just that, simple! Such a shame it had to go in favour of the SS :p

Roof Rails: $895
Carpet Mats: $595
Tint: $855
20" Alloys: $2860

I had a good look at the LR Discovery 4 this arvo at the dealers and was most surprised with the features on this model. I haven`t really researched them before ,but came away most impressed. I can see why they are becoming popular.
I was trying to talk the Mrs into one  but she still likes the new(more expensive :bawl: ) Rangie ......shown here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c2_Ke-IXnQ&feature=related

There are very few cars that have what they refer to as "keyless entry". In a nutshell, when you walk up to the car it unlocks itself (ie. no lock/unlock buttons on the keyfob), it works on your physical proximity to the vehicle. Even the base model Discovery doesn't have a key anymore, you simply get in the car with the keyfob in your pocket and push the start button.

After a fair bit of time spent looking at the LR4 I came to to a final decision...The New 4 is an excellent package with both prestige, off road cred and every feature I wanted in a car. I didn't buy one for a few reasons though...firstly the price for a car with the same features as our Kluger Grande blew out to 120k for a HSE TDV6 and even that didn't have the DVD for the kids. A few reliability issues popping up already in Landrover forums...the rear suspension at full height (which you need for beach driving) drops once you get over 40kph so when on a beach it will self lower and leave you very stuck. Trade in prices are very low and in Perth the only way to get a good trade in price is in one of only two LR dealerships owned by the same Dealer...Most of my off roading will be sand (I live in WA) and the 19's/20's simply don't have enough tyre so it will still only be average in the sand...I don't want to pay 120k and have it only average. SO I drove and ordered a Prado 2010 Kakadu V6...why ? it has every feature the Disco 4 has (including the DVD's) it is as capable off road but its strong point is sand. It has an equal multi terrain electronics 4x4 system but also good old faithful gear like centre diff lock, rear diff lock, KDSS Kinetic suspension system..Resale is excellent and reliability is top notch. Some on hear will try and compare it to the 120 series prado it replaces but it is chalk and cheese. The new prado handled superb on road (for a 4X4) and is near on unstoppable off road. Mine came in at $84k drive away which saved me 36k over the Disco and that will buy me a new Coromal off road camper van.... :)

My father in law has had 2 Discoveries, and both of them have been unreliable pieces of crap, with heaps of problems, including some really big stuff going wrong. The local dealership has been uninterested in getting things fixed.
A couple of years ago he finally got sick of it and bought a turbo diesel pajero to tow his van. Doesn't have the prestige, but totally reliable...

I do believe the newer cars 3's and 4's are alot better but if/when something go's wrong can you get parts/service and out of warranty repairs require re mortgaging the house.

These prices are a perfect example of why some people with too much money, are just stupid!
Roof rails are worth a pinch of sh%^. Get racks $500
Tint should be $300
Mats $150
Aftermarket integrated Nav system $1000
Oh and as far as offroad credibility goes, it ends when the minor ruts turn in to real 4wd territory. Try anything harder and you will have blown drivelines left right and centre.

Major driveline problems were why the F-I-L got rid of his last Discovery.

I had experience with the 3, and it was really good. As far as engines, i would go the new 3.0L V6 diesel over the older TDV8 in the Range Rover. Ford will be producing Range Rover's new 4.4L V8 diesel when it comes out. I would also go the Disco4 over the RR. I think it will be nicer than the Land Cruiser 200, and you will be able to stop when you put your foot on the brake. :)
