Hey Guys,
Thought I might check on here to see if anybody can help me with either a rangehood install or doing up a glass splash back for my new kitchen.
I can only seem to find one person in all of Brisbane that does rangehood installation and they've quoted me $550 for the install. For the splash back we have had quotes from $1500-$2500 and are keen to get a couple more quotes in if we can.
If anybody can pass on any recommendations or are in the businesses themselves PM me please. I'm really keen to get this done by the end of March if possible!
Cheers!
Adrian.
you can get a electrician to install the rangehood.have you asked a kitchen installer to fit the splashback?also try a glazier they will be cheaper as well.

As far as i know any builder should know how to install a rangehood. When i was working with my uncle who is a builder one of the jobs we did was a full rangehood install

$550 to install a rangehood:confused:, thats not bad money for an 1/2-1 hours work, if i had time i could fly up to brissy and install it and it would still come out cheaper than that.

I would pay to see you be able to install a rangehood with a chimney in 1/2-1 hour, i'd bet everything i have on you not being able to do it in that time. If you dont already have a rangehood installed its quite a timely process, take probably 3/4 of a day to be safe, 550 bucks isnt all that bad a price, bit on the steep side but you wont get it done much cheaper

Hey Vicarious,
What would be a reasonable price to install a rangehood then, inclusive of chimney going through a tiled roof?
if youve got the powerpoint for the rangehood, do it yourself, if not its not a bad price to get it fitted if it includes running a new point and fitting, there not hard, come with instructions, try the bigger glass places and also most showerscreen places do them too, stegbar, regency, and most glaziers, make sure its not a backyard job cos you need special paint to paint to glass
Adrian,
These guys are local and I would recommend both without question.
Splash back
Give Lionel(the boss) a call at GlassFX (32691277), did our last place and a perfect job on wrap around green tint glass splash back in a big kitchen.
Range hood.
We had a range hood installed, including ducting to the outside and vent ( but not going up through the roof) . Was under $300 installed.

Most of these rangehoods take no longer than 2 hrs to fit, inclusive of the ducting through the roof. My plumber does all ours and we pay him $375 for it which he does really well out of that.
Glass splashbacks i use Stegbar. They are reasonable priced and do a good job.

this job varies a lot depending upon the detail
just to whack a rangehood onthe wall with it on recirc and glass splashback under - piece of piss
however most people want the ducks nuts
rangehood inc chimney up through roof or even better through the wall (as its the lower level and teh rangehood could not be further from the outside wall) and its normally a 150 dia duct, with bends etc, rendered brick wall, has bracing ply in the way, normally over other cupboards etc
then we get to the glass
they want the glass to go right up (One piece) behind the rangehood to the top of the cabinets which requires trial fitting of teh rangehood to see where all the screws go (Normally miss every stud on the wall, so the wall has to be nogged out, re sheeted, re painted (Even if its getting glass on it as the colour will be different)
then the glass can be templated allowing for all the holes for the rangehood fitting and gpo behind the flue
now the glass has to be cut, drilled, toughened, coloured (and some people also want coloured mirrored splashbacks)
finally the glass can be reinstalled, rangehood fitted, duct connected, flue cover installed (Noramlly needs to be trimmed or extended)
SO
if they are charging that price i assume they have taken a lot of stuff into consideration that dont happen just by chance (and even by design with carefull planning and test fitting etc they occasionally still fcuk up)(and certainly if your buying a kitchen from kitchen connections and doing all the extras - ie install etc its not easy)
bit like checking pressure in tyre vs changing tyre, one almost anyone can do, other needs tools and expert abilty
anyway my advice - if you are anyway doubting or unsure of what has to happen leave it to experts, pay the price and good luck

Hey Vicarious,
What would be a reasonable price to install a rangehood then, inclusive of chimney going through a tiled roof?
for my work i charge $150 to fit a rangehood and flue it in to the ceiling space, providing there is enough room to allow enough airflow.Do you really require the flue to be vented into the atmosphere?(as that requires a roof plumber)

in regards to the glass splash back, depending on how much you are after I would say that that price is on par Im building a house at the moment and I was charged $2k for my splash back.
one thing to note if you are going to have powerpoints on the splashback make sure you know what type you are going to go for so they can cut to size correctly.
I have opted for the standard clipsal 2000 range, but will change them over to the clipsal saturn range - they use the same backing plate but the saturn range require a larger cutout on the splashback-something that cant be dont afterwardss

Hey guys,
Yeah I'll need to plumb it into the ceiling as the original "rangehood" was actually one of those crappy 80's bathroom vents that vented direclty into the ceiling and then thats it, which is illegal from what I have heard. I would prefer the chimney as I would have thought there was less work involved rather than punching through brick to vent outside. Plus if we were to vent through the wall it would vent straight out onto the future deck location so not really an option.
As for glass it's the full 4-5m2 we are being charged for because apparently we are being charged for the full sheet of glass rather than just the 30cm x 4m we need to go under the windows. The only high part of the splash back we have is pretty much directly under the hood and cabinet either side of the hood which is only 75cm high.
use a bigger company for your splashback, i used to be a fitter for stegbar, the going rate was $250 per M2 no matter what size you order, and the bigger places will have offcuts lying around to make your splashback,
