david,
There were some issues with earlier SV6's in the alignment of the A/C pully and the main drive belt, I think it was causing a wine/grind sort of sound. Not the sort of thing you'd expect to be normal.. To rectify this dealer service areas would use a laser alignment tool to correct the issue. Any chance you can put up a video of the noise for us to listen to?..
Cheers,
Phil

I am having a mechanic look at it tomorrow, will tell you how it goes, i have previously taken it to holden and they said it was common for the ve series to whine:confused:, hopefully an easy fix

I had a similar pulley replaced on our old VT 6 or 7 years ago, cost was around $180-190. Be interesting to see if much has changed.

Is it a manual?
If so, the Aisin 6 speed manuals in the V6's are known to whine a bit.

Yer it's a six but it seems to have gotten louder over the period of a month, hopefully find out exactly what is making that noise tomorrow, I can also here it in neutral reving the engine.

From within the car it's a little difficult to pick up. The sound reminds me of alternator whine (whistle) through the audio amp and out the speakers...
Can you take a video of the car stationary with the bonnet open and reproduce the whine (whistle)? The VE V8 has a whistle from the alternator charge when you first start up the car from sitting for several hours... If you have your lights on the whistle will continue, however if you turn them off is almost goes away.
Are you getting this noise all the time or just at night while driving when the headlights are on?
Cheers

Electrical interference for sure. Possible a poor earth or faulty noise suppression.
The dealer should be well aware of it.
Just flash em yer warranty card and you'll be right as rain :(

The charge characteristics of the alternator in the VE is different to previous models. They now only supply charge the battery on demand rather constantly. The BCM basically tells the alternator when you increase the voltage supply to the battery. Part of the reason to introduce this feature was to assist (along with other things) with overall reduction in fuel consumption. My SSV has the same whistle when I leave work (basement carpark) in the afternoon and my headlights are on. If I turn them off it pretty much goes away. It only seems to do this for a short period of time and when there is additional load on the electrical system...
Just about every VE I have driven and seen at work makes the same noise, but only for a short period of time after the car has been sitting for several hours..
Cheers
Phil
