Hi

Recently I have bought used Holden Astra Sedan 2004 , Model Name : 8TG69-234.

I tried to find out if we do need to replace automatic transmission fluid, but I could not find any information in the user manual that I have got with the car

I googled it and I found

The link below says we do not need to replace the transmission fluid

hxxp://xxx.nissansilvia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=314714& Please replace the first xx with tt and the second xxx with www

The link below says that we should change engine oil every 3000 miles

hxxp://xxx.fixya.com/cars/t3238863-often_need_oil_change_astraPlease replace the first xx with tt and the second xxx with www

Now my questions :

1- Do we need to replace ATF ? And How often ?

2- How often should I replace engine oil ?

3- Can I download the service manual (not owner manual )for the car ?

4- If i can not download the service manual for the car , is there an online source that recommends how often we should do various maintenance for the car ?

Thanks

I checked another manual for a friend of mine which has 2005 not 2004 I found this on page 12-4 :

" Change automatic transmission fluid @ 6000 km or 4 years (whichever comes first) "

Then that contradicts with page 12-6 below on the same manual :

" AUTO TRANS - fluid change : Not changed for life of vehicles unless operating in extreme condition "

Any clarification ?

the owners manual shows service intervals
Yes you are right I did not find that.

engine oil changes are every 15000kms
Yes it says every 15000 km ,,,,I feel that too much ,,,,but since it is a recommendation by the manufacturer I have no objection.

and auto trans.?..dont know her's is manual
This is what I found in the manual

" Change automatic transmission fluid @ 6000 km or 4 years (whichever comes first) "

Then that contradicts with page 12-6 below on the same manual :

" AUTO TRANS - fluid change : Not changed for life of vehicles unless operating in extreme condition "

Any clarification ?

No oil is for life. (from an oil manufactures point of view)

Just change it

Should be bright red

I'd change it anyway

Cheers

If you run a fully synthetic engine oil you are ok for 10,000 change intervals, a mineral or semi synthetic oil is good for 5,000 k's.
I get my auto serviced every 20,000 k's, you could probably stretch the Astra auto service interval to 30,000 k's.
I can't comprehend any car manufacturer saying that their auto transmission is "sealed for life" (ie requires no servicing). I bet most of them are thinking that the average punter will upgrade their car every 3-5 years (ie outside of warranty) & therefore, if the transmission craps itself - it's the owner's problem.

My 2005 Astra has done 92,000km, and has has the engine oil changed every 15,000km (I've owned it from new). It uses no oil, starts first go and is probably quicker and more flexible than when new.

My mechanic reckons every 15k is fine provided you do the change on time, and use decent oil and filters.

Our Astra is manual, so can't comment on the auto trans fluid.
