Done a bit of looking around
Thinking top of the range

Any one have any Preferances or experiances with some top of the range tyres..... ??

Continental ContiSport 3, absolutey the best alround tyre I've run on our Monaro.

If money is no object then I'd be looking at a Michelin or Continental. The potenzas tend to wear fast and develop pulling issues due a bias problems. I wouldn't put a Dunlop on any list of "top" tyres just quietly .....
If money is an issue or you just want to save some to spend on other things then give the Neuton tyres a crack. NT5000 235/40/18 W I think they are. Have run them for 3 years now (30,000 km's) and with sensible rotation (front to back once only), I've still got a very even 50% tread left on all four. (Run them on 42 psi cold). They balance up well, are quiet and damn good in the wet considering their somewhat harder compound. I will keep buying them untill they stop making them  $150 fitted each, balanced, rims intact :)

Don't expect better performance from this oddball size you are wanting. It will also put your speedo out.
That size is far less common than the correct 235/40/R18, so may limit your options, or at least increase the cost of them.

Sorry Davo, this is the new size on the current fords ( and old fords ) well supported size nowadays.

I run the MA-Z1, for there price i think they are a great tyre, But if ya willing to pay 400 or 500 per tyre, i'm sure theres lots a better ones around.
I only use my car on the street, so dont know how the MA-Z1 would go on the track
Go and buy some Bridgestone RE050A's, i read in another post that there were some specials on them at the moment.

I run the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetrical in a 245/40R18 on my VZ SS ute and have found them to be fantastic both in the wet and dry for grip, easily the best road tyre I have ever driven on and I do get to try a few as a mate runs a tyre store for one of the big retailers, they do get a bit noisy when getting low on tread but that doesn't bother me much. They do wear a bit quicker than most though but I guess that is the price you pay for grip. Didn't seem to effect the spedo much either.

Look at Bridgestone RE001 in 235/40 R18
Give Protek tyres a call they normally look after the LS1.com guys :goodjob:
Alternatively you cant beat the value of KU36's ath the moment. A step up again from the RE001's in performance but CHEAPER  They will not last very long though.

At the top end I don't think you can beat the Goodyear F1 DS G3 's - I think the tread design has changed recently, but they still win tyre tests. In my experience on the old GTO the Original Bridgies would not last more than 31,000 km, they were an excellent tyre in the dry very good in the wet but when I went to the F1's they were far superior in the wet and equal in the dry and I got 43,000 km's out of them! The first lot were German made but when I replaced them the new ones were Australian made - thankfully they were every bit as good (just needed a bit more lead when balancing.)
So impreesed with the F1's I've put them on the SV6 - unfortunately they don't make a size that suits the VE GTS so I had to get Bridgies for that again.
I was quoted $380 for these by Bridgestone at Coopers Plains today.

I notice that you have a Sportwagon, were you quoted for the 98 or 94 load rated tyres? You need the 98 rated ones to stay legal.

thinking more of an soft compound tyre as i only use the monaro on weeknds....
Rang up a few tyre dealers they are telling me to go for
Bridgestones. potenza $ 444 or RE050 $677
Tokohama Advan sport $430
Price is not a big issue
although about 500 a tyre is a max only looking to purchase 2 tyres atm...
Does anyone have some experiance witht the Semi slick yokahama/ kuhmo /other brand tyres

The Bridgies were the OE ones SO-3's from memory - were very good but not as good as the F1's.
Never got any from China - though my daughter got two Goodyears for her Barina and they are Chinese made - so far no problems and they hang on OK for run of the mill tyres.
Around $400.00 each at AAA tyres in Guildford NSW.

There you go. Ford tyres on a Holden...:stick:
Still a bit of a misguided decision to go this size on this model in my opinion.
One can only assume "perceived" performance gains are behind it.

Hi mate i was only after the 245.. as its the biggest tyre i can fit under the gard (with out rolling)
and an extra 10mil of tyre on the road cannot be a bad thing right ??

You also gain a small amount of extra sidewall height due to keeping a 40 profile, leading to a less "low profile" tyre, so what you theoretically gain with extra width you could lose due to extra sidewall height. I also believe that you will visually notice the fact you are running an "oversize" tyre.
You mention that price isn't an issue. Have you considered going to 19's?

I have previously had my old mans old tyre (ford tyres lol) 245 and they did look quite overssized on the car
but it did give it a tuff look.....
price is not an issue as far as the tyre is concerned...
i have alwaz liked these rims and have only had them fitted to the car for a few weeks now.....not 2 keen on upgrading wheels already
after the weeknd in wet weather i just want some better tyres all around as its the only thing between me and the road
40k car gotta keep it in good condition...
i will look into the 235's also thats for the tip buddy

I pleased to read that you are prepared to spend on a premium tyre READA. Far too many people buy really nice cars like yours/mine/others, then run out of money buying ugly rims, big sound etc, and stick the nastiest 3rd world import sh!t tyres on.
A potential accident waiting to happen, and an indicator of people getting their priorities very wrong.

Stay away from the KU36 for road duties................
Even my Kumho rep suggested to me to go a higher spec tyre. They are designed to be flogged at the track, thats it. You want a comp tyre try the R888 toyo or the bridgestone. None of these will be good in the wet.
As for others mentioned above, don't waste your money on the Maxxis.
In case others cant read he is looking for a 245/40r18 - no use quoting the 245/45 price.
Some like the feel of the adrenalin b/stone, otherwise the 050a is a OK tyre, but honestly just an OE tyre. Both are assymetrical so you cant turn them around to counter the IRS issues. The goodyear mentioned above and the toyo are directional (enabling the tyre to be rotated from left to right - although must be done by a tyre shop). Toyo prob under $400 goodyear - would have to check.

he also told me to stay away from the 245 as the benfit is extreamly minimal and the speedo will be out...
He also told me the RE050 which is $593... is not that much better for $333 extra per tyre....

Cheers for the tip's mate
went down to a tyre dealer this morning and he helped me out a fair bit
told me to stay away from semislicks as they need to be very warm to actualy get the benifits that the tyre has
so maybe a summer tyre but not a winter tyre which winter is coming up....
even tho they are just a OE tyre holden must of done some testing along the lines to actually warrnt using the tyres u would hope...

I have had REO50's RE001's RS2's and am now running KU36's on the street , I have also tried A048's RE55's and R888's on the track.
KU36 are fine on the street for a weekender.
In regards to to RE050 vs RE001 the RE001 is clearly the superior tyre.
Ive USED a decent selection of tyres and that is what i have found.

I have been told by the bridgstone dealer today
that on paper the RE040 / RE050 is a much better trye....
the RE001 looks like a more agressive street racing tyre compared to the RE040/050
they are reasonably cheap compared to the RE050.....
on paper RE050 wins hands down...
intresting u saying the RE001 is a better tyre... but personal experiance is what i am after so cheers buddy :)

Afterall you don't want your tyres getting too old as they get hard.

I run 235 Bridgestone RE001s on the front and rear for trips but normal street driving is the RE001s on the front and 245 Toyo RA1s on the rear and it does make a big difference when running the RA1s. The compound helps but a the extra width doesnt hurt either. Looks good too. I want to run something bigger on the rear but it means changing the wheels. My car just wheel spins with any "normal" street tyre. Waste of time.

My choice would be to stick with Yokohama Advan Sport. The price you were quoted is way to high. Should be able to get for around $400. I have been running these tyres for years. I started with Advan V102 and the Current sport V103. I am currently running Yoko Advan AD08, and they are the best tyre i have driven on. I would not touch bridgstone. You would be able to get more than 22-23k out of them. With my driving i get around 30-34k with the advasn sports. Obviously less if you like to burn rubber. Call traction tyres in Rowville for prices. You will not be disapointed. Don't waste $500 on bridgestones as they are second class.

Yes I have a set of these on my ute. Heaps of tread, not too noisy, good in the wet. Got 40 000km out of mine and fried the daylights out of them. Pretty cheap too. I think I paid $170 a tyre fitted.
