Hyosung is an up and coming brand. It has had teething issues along the way (as did the major brands back in the 70's and 80's). I haven't heard anything about the 2010 models but I have heard of (and seens pics of) late model GT250R and 650R bikes destroying valves and other engine failures. Hopefully these faults have been ironed out in the 2010 bikes. Apparently, the Hyosung bikes need valve clearance checks and good quality oil changes extra regularly. Build quality has improved significantly over the last 5 years also.

From what I understand is that the EFI bikes can not be derestricted, well it can but is super expensive as you need to change the ecu, unlike the older carb models.

I had a Hyosung GV250 for my first bike :)
It was a really early one - a 2002. I was the third owner and had it for 18 months. During this time, I covered 5000 kms without it missing a beat. I found it important to find a dealer that really knows the bike - in Melbourne, use Staffords in Heidelberg.
Also, check out the Hyosung forums korider.com.
Good Luck

Similar to the SV650S LAMS model? I remember reading that it would be around $1300 to change the ECU in one of them, so probably worth just selling and buying an unrestricted model if that's what you want to ride.
It depends on what you want really, whether it be low down torque with relatively no top end, or no bottom end with relatively good top end. What sort of bike would you see yourself on when you get your full license? I stick with a CBR250 for my Ps because I wanted a revvy 600 next. If you would want something like an SV650 then that style of bike would be the go. See if a dealer will let you test ride the GT650R and make up your mind. You have to remember that although the engine is nearly triple the size, they will ultimately have very similar power to weight to the 250s

Also look at the GS500... i have one of those as i am still on my Ps.
Great bike to learn on... it has more poke than the VTR250 (only other bike i have ridden which i can compare to)
Also i have read on some motorcycle orientated forums that the resale on hyosungs is not the best (this is for the older models) so you may want to take that into consideration.
