As some of you know, I recently purchased a ex police VE SS.
After starting the car, if you use the left hand side scroll button it comes up as Trap speed. I had a go on the ute and it just changes the radio station, so what I want to know is if anyone else has the same thing or is this something to do with ex police cars only.

Yes it's a police pack feature. It allows a speed to be captured when following a car. Change the dash mode to the klm you've travelled and it will let you change the radio not the trap speed.

even if you could itd be useless without a speed gun attached to it.

Trap speed is not really all that exciting. All it is, is it allows you to push a button and it locks the display to show the speed you were travelling when you pushed the button. Has nothing to do with the radar and does not work in conjunction with it.

What other options do police cars get?
Is it true ex police cars always go better then normal ones? Like upgraded chips that only the police can get?

I had my instrument cluster in my MY10 changed over to a red one (from the original grey) the other week and it now has this "feature" possibly a software update/change.
P.s. It also now defaults to the digital speedo everytime i start the car. It's annoying as to use the scroll wheel for the radio/cd i have to change the display and wait for it to "lock in". If anyone knows how to change the default back to the odometre screen or for it to stay on what it was on last time it was used pls let me know.
Thanks
Aaron

Police do not get magical power chips put in their cars.
The only argument to them "going better than ordinary commodores" would be that they do alot less stop start driving... more continuous driving.
Having said that police cars, and more specifically HWP cars, get flogged to the nines.
I recently attended a pursuit which had ended and was informed that 3 of the HWP cars were being taken off road and having various parts replaced because they were flogged so hard. ie cooked brakes, trannys etc.
I also noted that one of these said vehicles had 2400 on the clock.
Good run in procedure.

You'll likely find that the officers that have to drive the cars will look after them. Its the ones that don't need them for their line of work that take them out and flog them regardless.
But such is life for a HWP vehicle, that's the role it has to play. Nothing wrong with replacing parts if its been given a hard time either, at least its being maintained. Take your car to a track for a few laps and see how it fares....

any v8 car can be said to have been flogged, otherwise why would somene buy a v8??? As the saying goes, drive it like you stole it and the cops are up the ass of these kind of people day in day out

Whilst the police cars would be driven hard, I bet they are looked after engine/mechanically wise.

Ok did not know that. the only thing i ever noticed on the HWP SS was that they've got upgraded brakes and have different springs to standard. Thanks for the info moconn

Just take a trip to your local Holden dealer and get them to remove Police Mode using a tech2...
I got Police mode activated in my VY Monaro as i wanted a digital speedo which my model didnt originally have. i like that it defaults to the digital speedo when i start the car. I keep it on the digital speedo 99% of the time anyway. I've got the "trap speed" function and it's completely pointless unless you can actually book someone.

Different brake pads that's about it. Springs are standard FE2 they just look lower because of all the crap carried around in the boot.

Now there's a quick and easy mod for lowering! lol
Bloke says: Geez I'd like the back end a bit lower...
Mate replies: Just fill up the boot!

Thanks Guys. It does nothing but I was curious.
The only things that I have noticed that are different is the rear parking sensors, different brake pads, tranny cooler, and from what I have been told is that they have a heavy duty alternator. Other than that, it's a standard SS.
I had it on the dyno the other day to see what power it made before we start the mods next week and ran 198rwkw
