View Full Version : Wheels for my Monaro
I going to change my wheels on the Monaro and want to put on the Speedy Inferno 18x8 front and 18x9 rear and the tyre people tell me I cant have the 18x9 on the rear as they wont fit the off set is wrong and they will scrape.
Has any one fitted 18x9 to the rear of a Monaro and what size tyre did you use and what off set were the rims. I have some Toyo high performance tyres but they are 245/45/18 could I use these tyres. Also did you have to roll the gaurds.
I currently have Speedy Spider rims 18x8.5 all round and rear only scrapes when fully loaded on a trip on larger bumps in the road.
cheers Allan
I got the tyre sizes mixed up with my other car the ones for the Monaro are 245/40/18 front and 274/35/18 rear will these fit the rear with rolling the gaurds on 18x9 rims

Just get the right offset!
I run 245/35/19 on 19"x8.5" and 275/30/19 on 19"x9.5" on our CV8.

i have 20x9 with 245/30 on the rear of my coupe.
its lowered with minimal rolling to guards.
it scrubs rarely only in larger road divets.:flipoff:
+42 is offset i think. +45 is preferred for vt-vz i think.
hope this helps.

The thing with Aussie cars is that the a/m wheels available are designed with gay widths and offsets.
These cars are so large, yet the wheels we run are so skinny.
A Monaro can even fit a 9.5" on its' rears with an offset as low as +20 for example.
This can be fitted with just a roll and maybe a minor flare of the guards.
Genuine Ve GTS (9.5" rears) wheels with staggered offset sit extremely nice under a Monaro,
in comparison to replica's which are only 8" wide on the rear.

The 18 x 9 will fit ok and will fit with 275 tyres. Some minor work may be required like a guard roll at least. Depending how low you want to go maybe a very small guard pump but you would have to have you wheel going under the guard area. The calculator says a extra 21mm outward and adding on the extra width of the 275 tyre that would be more like 25mm extra outwards. The inner room on the strut side will be spot on. The 18x9 are a good offset for wider wheels if you keep to 18s on the VT to VZ cars.
The fronts are fine and no mods needed with the 18x8 offset on the cheetas
Thanks for the help guys. The front is no problem the off set is ET45. The rear off set is ET38, I have no idear what this means, I assume it off set to the inner side of the gaurd for the extra width. I think I will go with my choice and forget the misinformation I got from the tyre shop.
thanks Allan

+38 is it. Some shops say +40. Either way that should be still ok but as mentioned depending how low you go a small guard pump may be required. Definitially a guard roll will be needed. Just get a ruler and see what adding 25-27mm extra to the outer of the wheel will do with repsect to the guard
What I do is get the car on a flat surface. I get some string and a nut on the end of it. I hang it from the inside of the guard at the maximum outer part that the wheel will clear on the guard (i.e. guard roll part). Once that string is all stable I get a tape measure or ruler and see how much room there is from the tyre to the string and measure that. Then work out the offsets. In your case see what adding max 27mm will do.
There is one more thing as the car is independat suspention as you put weight on the car the wheel will tuck under a little. I rely on this otherwise my car would scrape bad.
BTW> The more + offset you go the more outwards toward the guard. The more - is inwards towards the strut/springs.
Thanks HSV Listy you have been a great help I now feel confident in ordering the rims. I will now look arround to find someone local to roll my gaurds
thanks again Allan

Mate there is NO way you will fit a 9.5" wheel on the rear of a Monaro with a +20mm offset, shit even a +40 offset is going to scrape with the guards rolled.

I have 9.5s on the rear of my Monaro with 265/30/19s. My offset is +46 and it sits nice. Had to roll the guards as expected.

these are Speedy Cheetah's 19x9.5 +40mm Offset, 275/30/19. If the wheels you are looking at are +38 you will have a fair bit of work to get them on without scrubbing the guards. The biggest problem is not at the top of the guard but at the point where the rear bumper meets the metal ie. at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions. I also had to cut/dremel off some of the plastic inner guard.
Are you sure you want to do all this mucking around ? If you can find a 9.5" with an offset of +48 it would go on without any problems.
The 9.5" VE hsv wheels will fit, but are close on the inner side.
My car has standard springs in it and the tyres just touch now and then with a full tank or some gear (heavy) in the boot.

+46 is a good offset with only a guard roll to be safe, but +38 will be a bit more of a challenge.

Those Speedy Cheetah's look awesome on your Monaro CeeVee8. They suit it perfectly and look tough to boot...
