been done to death and everyone will have their own opinion,

but the di filippo dual 3" big boy system gets my vote.

You will not be dissapointed with the DF system.. they are pricey yes but you get what you pay for.

All comes down to howw much you want to spend, intentions for the car etc.

What is the best setup for a VY SS ute then? I have done a search, but cant find what I want.

I have a stock standard VYII SS ute. Im after something thats not excessively loud, but has a nice meaty, deep V8 sound. And no drone.

You will only need a twin 2 1/2 inch of what ever brand you prefer, like i said i prefer manta but every1 is to their own opinion, if you plan on doing mods down the track then go for a twin 3" instead

I have a redback 2.5 inch catback on mine, sounded awesome on the end of the standard exhaust and even better with a set of di filippo headers and cats.
Di filippo gets my vote :goodjob:

Custom Titanium System & F1 Mufflers :)

You said "ultimate" so i would have a custom system made to suit the vehicle you have, with v bands/no gaskets etc etc made from a quality material with the best mufflers i could afford.

Off the shelf is easy and as can be seen above everyone has their favourite.

Pacemaker tri-y's,hi flow cats and sureflo 3.5 medium catback should do the job. Well it does for me anyway

Everyone is just stating certain off the shelf brands. Surely the "ultimate" system would be custom made out of stainless or titanium with some very high quality mufflers, cats and some hand made extractors would be the very best, no?

it isnt for my car. was just curious.. i was thinking the diffilipo or the walkinshaw exhaust would be one of the best out there

For VE Commodore without a doubt is a KPM 2.5" or 3"
Guaranteed not to drone looks the dog's bollocks and sounds absolutely fantastic......... KPM

AFAIK Walkinshaw Performance use a HM/Perry system.

Not sure if they modify it in anyway after the receive it though??

I've been reading up on exhausts for about 6 months, but don't have the $$ for something like KPM or Di Fillippo.

So I'm looking at something like a modified (custom) HM/Perry 2.5" or 3" cat back to start with.

Think i've found the man for the job too :)

Will post details when we can come to an arrangement.

Cheers
Andy

i like my sound, pacey 1" 3/4 4>1's, 3" stainless highflows into a stainless remus race exhaust

Like VZ V8 said a custom exhaust is always going to be better than an off a shelf product. In saying that, Manta and KPM make some damn nice systems!

The best exhaust is as little exhaust as possible... some extractors into some ballistic cats, dump pipes straight after the cats ;). Oh you dont want loud? :P

Best exhaust I've ever heard on a ls1 was on a Monaro with Pacemaker 4>1's, highflow cats, custom stainless twin 2.5" with 2 mufflers and 2 resi's. The note is to die for everywhere in the rev range.

Worst exhaust I've ever heard is a twin 2.5" csv exhaust system.

hand made tuned length 1-3/4 primaries into 3" collectors, into 3" ballistic 100cpsi cats, threw a nice size 3" stainless steel cross over, flowing into hand made diffillipo stainless steel 3" mufflers then dumping out just before the tires angling out a fraction to blow tire smoke out.

Ok so say if someone were to want this hypothetical 'best' exhaust, any recomendations for custom exhaust work in Melbourne?

Highpoint Muffler Centre for custom. A mate of mine has a VZ Monaro, he
went there and it is probably one of the best sounding 5.7's that
I have heard. It's a full 3" mild steel system.

I was quoted the same price for a mild steel system from them as a full
stainless steel 3" DF was going to cost me, so I went for the DF. I think
the DF's have one of the best sounds out there (for an off the shelf system) not being cocky, but I think that my
car sounds better than most I've heard - especially in comparison to the X-force and other cheap systems.

You get what you pay for unfortunately.

Why don't you just go with a Manta system? Saves starting with a modified system and then modifying it further... VE systems can be had for $1400 for twin 2.5" or $1500 for twin 3"
Very good sounding system and as everyone has already said, no drone.

I've found the manta systems are hard to find if you're on the east coast

Regardless that 3 inch sounds better than 2.5 inch and we all know inches count in life EXCEPT with exhausts. No commodore needs a bigger exhast than 2.5 inch regardless of what ill informed retailers tell you. The secret to a good exhaust is scavenging the cylinders and this relies on a large degree on exhaust pulses caused by the correct size exhaust matched to the motor size etc. If you go too big you lose the scavenging effect and will lose lowdown torque which is what you want in a street car. You will also use way more fuel. If yoiulike the look of a 3 inch then put 3 inch tailpies but stick to 2.5 inch from the extractors to the tailpipe start. I run a supercharger on my VY SS ute that puts out 440hp at the rear wheels and uses less fuel than stock. I run a Difillipo stainless 2.5 inch system with stainless extractors. Sounds great but never drums and never attracts attention of police.

I live in Sydney and ordered mine direct from Perth Exhaust Centre ask for Don

Delivered straight to my door, hassle free.

I have a VE HSV GTS Auto with 1" 3/4 Ceramic Coated Pacemaker Headers, 3" Manta Cats and 3" Catback System with NO FRONT MUFFLER.

Sounds awesome so I have been told.
